I'm starting to have second thoughts on Hitman getting GOTY. It may not be everyone's favorite but it might be the thing they will all agree on.

I love that Alex made sure to bring up the one point that Sean Murray apologists do their absolute best to avoid by saying "did he really lie though?" It's the fact that Hello Games had absolutely every chance to temper expectations like the devs of Astroneer did.
Also he completely nailed the part about Palmer Luckey. Learning what I did about that guy after all that nimble stuff came out is the first time I've felt actual disgust in a long time. Oh, wow, that guy I thought was sorta decent is actually really cool with racists and follows a Gamergate rape apologist on Twitter.

Yeah, wow, I had never heard that story before. Sounds like he was almost fired for taking the same stance that eventually did get him fired 7 years later. Apparently GameSpot had higher-ups from the very beginning who didn't give a shit about the integrity of the editorial process.
I mean how the fuck does the biggest video games website in the world allow themselves to just bump up a score from a 6.8 to 7.8 to appease the backlash from fans and Sega PR? Different times, I guess.

I actually think there's a chance Overwatch takes GOTY. Dan could be the one to swing it in that way and when DOOM (which I still expect to win) was brought up in today's deliberations, Jeff seemed more hesitant on it than I thought he'd be (complaining about the glory kills is a key example).

A lot of people do have those preconceptions, not just on GAF (and not just about GB). But the second half of your post is exactly why they started recording their entire deliberations, so everyone knows the thought process that went into it, whether you agree with it or not...!

In my opinion Alex is always the MVP in these discussions, he always ends up conceding most points because he's in the minority, but he always brings it in the arguments up to that point.
Yep, that's why every year, first thing I do is listen to the podcasts. Won't check my phone or computer until it's done. These podcasts are probably my favorite content they put out, mainly because I love the way these conversations end up. Granted, most years are rough to listen to, especially when it comes to stuff like best story or game of the year, but it's still one of my favorite things on the site. As I said earlier in the topic, I couldn't imagine watching these.

Overwatch is my own GOTY.
But they don't go for a happy medium on these things. Someone's #1 preference *will* win out.
I was at PAX and was *so sure* it was gonna be DOOM that I said as much to Brad in person.
But then the last few months of Hitman happened. And Jeff mentioned casually that he didn't bother to keep DOOM installed on the PS4 -> PS4 Pro transition.
The main thing from day one's deliberations that made me pause for thought was where Hitman appears on Dan's top ten list.
That said, I still think it'll be Hitman. And it'll *definitely* be it or DOOM.

I don't know. I think Overwatch will get a lot of argument as "the multiplayer shooter everyone played" and I think opponents of Doom in the discussion will attack the MP being so terrible. We have to remember that last year Dan and Jeff agreed wholeheartedly on GOTY being Mario Maker, so we don't know how voraciously Dan will argue against say Doom or even Hitman.

Does the Hitman video spoil the podcast? I'm saving the podcast stuff for work tomorrow but I'd like to watch the video this afternoon.
They talked about some gameplay changes in INSIDE, but having not played that game I don't know how meaningful they were.
In any case, it was during its section in the Best Styyyyyyyle award; the exact timestamp is in a few posts above this one.
Lol, my favorite part of these things is always when they've been dancing around the fact that they really don't like a game all year long because, you know, videogame journalism, and then it's GOTY time and it's just one sentence busting out like, "Guys, I've never really liked that game because such and such..."
2/3rds in I was getting increasingly dismayed about their meek way of talking around and downplaying a certain candidate. Thank god for Alex Navarro speaking truth to assholes everywhere, he always brings the appropriate amount of fire to discussions of these kinds of issues and I couldn't respect him any more for it.
