Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Man, they way that Doom got talked about in the best style category was a real preview for Day 5, at some point they were just absolutely gushing over it under the pretense of style. I didn't expect Vinny to be so into it, too, it almost sounds like that might be his number 1.

Really felt bad for Vinny during his Virginia defense. I've been meaning to play that game, it seems really up my alley.

Vinnys going for overwatch. He didn't pick alotta battles today except for Witcher, and even then Alex made the argument for that. He's saving it his energy for Overwatch. Or HItman.
hitman will be in the top 5 but i don't think anyone will fight for it to be number 1

Yeah it's absurd that it didn't get on the list, let alone win like it should have. They've completely forgotten about the spirit of the category.

The spirit of the category? Wasn't it originally to award Fallout 3 for getting so much discussion because of its DLC?

Nah. The way Dan talked about Stardew, and the way Alex talked today, will herald Overwatch to #1. Vinny will join in too. Jason loved it too.

Brad and Jeff are done for.

But you're missing the biggest influence of all

Geometry Wars is very repetitive and should be knocked for it. Other twin stick shooters did a much better job with variety.

The stuff that gets said on these podcasts and goes unchallenged is amazing.

Yeah, Dan was like a dog with a bone with stardew despite EVERYONE else wanting it gone. Like it was obvious from the moment it got talked about that it was going, and he still stuck with it. We know Alex and Vinny are fighting for it, that'll get Dan in on it, and while Brad and Jeff are the most tenacious, nobody dislikes Overwatch enough to fight that hard AGAINST it.

Chuck

Still without luck
Well Shenmue isnt all that great and they hated playing it.
Exactly.

No they started it to give Call of Duty 4 an award in 08, but it change over time and didn't necessarily mean best game of the old stuff they played. Shenmue is absolutely their old game of 2016.

Even Jeff was like(
During Best Debut
) "
Yeah I didn't make a case for Super Hot because I assumed everyone would be for Overwatch
"

Brad will probably be the one arguing against Overwatch on some semantic issue for an hour

"Listen, stop saying Overwatch is Amazing, I don't get it."

"Brad just listen, it's A-Mei-zing. Just take our word for it."

"NO I WON'T. IT'S NOT DOOM. I'LL GLORY KILL YOU!"

'member when people though Hitman was going to win?

heh heh...

The fact that they were so positive about Overwatch surprised me.

Watching the Specialtacular from old Gamespot I keep waiting for one of them to just blurt out HOLY SHIT I MISS RYAN! I know it won't happen because they're more reserved about it but... fuck. I never met him but holy shit I miss him.

Hitman will get a lot of love but it won't be GB's GOTY. Doom is more likely, imo.

Hottest Mess pretty much went the way it should have, especially given the excellent discussion throughout. That said, I really would have liked to have heard them pick between those two runners up.

Well

http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/giant-bombs-2011-game-of-the-year-awards-day-one/1100-3863/

Sometimes it's the game from last year we played the most, or at least thought about the most, in the following year. Other times it's the game that got the most and best post-release support and DLC from its developer. Hell, the first year we created the category simply to honor a game we felt didn't get its full due in the year of its release. It's a weird category, OK?

They only changed it from the game of last year to any year due to Windjammers.

So there was no "breaking of spirit" since Witcher 3 basically won based on the second and "third" criteria

They did pick, even Alex explicitly said that NMS would have run away with it if not for Lucky.

So I know this thread is mainly for discussion, but I'm feeling like I am missing something. Giant Bomb is kind of known for going all out on their end of year videos, and all I'm seeing on the site is a video of the podcast deliberations, and a kind of odd, poorly improvised, 'Holiday Specialtacular' that after a few rambling minutes just turns into a quick look of Hitman?

Am I missing something? Did they decide to go a different route this year for any reason in particular?

Probably, but I would have loved to hear the conversation. SFV got locked in so early that it didn't get the comparative discussion it deserved.

I'm not sure the discussion would have gone much differently as I don't think a single person on that table would have seriously argued for SFV winning it.

Yeah. They talked about SFV before NMS and Luckey, and after it got to Luckey, it became 'People whining about a game versus guy funding a hate group.'

Could be time since full skits needs a lot of prep

Or maybe to change it up again?

For me its kinda strange since they seem to be parodies of their current premium series so far (so maybe a message?)

I think the Palmer situation is so overblown. Even if the dude is a racist whatever, it's one dude doing some dumb shit. NMS was an entire dev team, publishers, marketing departments all massively overselling a game. NMS will be used as a cautionary tale for years to come about how not to market a game. It affected thousands and thousands of gamers who bought NMS off trailers that were very misleading.
During the podcast discussion I was waiting for Alex to actually say what the situation with Palmer was, cause he was making it sound like Palmer was literally the worst person alive, but I didn't hear any facts or anything that I could tell. It just sounded like he was personally offended cause Palmer was on their site.

Ahh, I fell off of the Giant Bomb wagon a few years back - so I was unaware of any kind of current time crunch they might be under due to other circumstances. I guess the set pieces did look different so maybe they moved again? (Or got sold again?)

Regardless, I always checked in for end of year stuff cause it was always a treat. :/

Shame - but as long as I know I'm not missing out on anything beyond the text articles, I guess I'm golden. Thanks for clarifying!

Luckey was the face of VR. He was on the cover of Time. It didn't matter that NMS was a group of people-Luckey represents VR, he represents Oculus, he represents alot of things, and here he is funding hate groups. Not only that but GB has given a voice to him on their site, whether it was the E3 after hours or other content, GB has been a platform for Luckey. So I feel this is GB course-correcting as well.

NMS is nothing compared to that. Games come out broken or lacking all the time. This was different.

(At this point the Luckey stuff is prevalent, and since it's such a huge deal, I suppose that doesn't need to be spoilered since we've talked so much about it)

He did explain it, though. Palmer Luckey was the face of VR, in a year in which VR finally "arrived". It became such a mess that they went from trotting out Luckey at every opportunity to completely disappearing him off the face of the earth. And it was an issue that went beyond just gaming, and people being upset because a certain game didn't live up to expectations or deliver on its promises.

Saying that it was because "he was personally offended cause Palmer was on their site" is an awfully trite misunderstanding of why they chose that.

Alex's bit about Palmer was good. I felt like it was a slow realization for the rest of the guys in the room, especially since GB doesn't do the political scene that much.

Brad and Jeff make up, like, eight other GB's during GOTY time. There will be no stopping them.

tbf i'm just guessing

But they moved to a different floor of the office building during the last year which meant the new studio had to be setup and their skits for that year were centered around that.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Gif request from the hitman video.

When Vinny walks into the hall expecting just 1 guard as Sheikh Zanzibar and see's a shit load of guests and everyone except Jeff jumps out of their chairs.

Dan is my hero! That number one means he will be the champion that game deserves.

GOOD WORK, DAN!

And to be honest, the more I think about that game, the more I want to keep moving it up my own list. It really is that good, just like Dan mentions; and I feel the same way.
