OK, parts of the DD interface are simplistic. The rolodex of heroes isn't very cool. There are moments I'm trying to compare stats or equipment between heroes and it feels very clunky. But best style isn't best UI.
The art is gorgeous, and while it might crib too heavily from Mike Mignola's house style, it's unlike any other game. Dark inky borders draped over surprisingly colorful characters and background. The feel of DD is gloomy, but the art pops with a vibrant palette. The Leper is that guy from Kingdom of Heaven, but I love him. Every pig monster is beautifully repulsive. The forest map feels like a Grim Fairy tale that's been poisoned. It's very pretty game with a cohesive, striking art style.
Turn based is as clinical as game combat gets, but Darkest Dungeon makes it feel visceral (apologies for the use of visceral.) Critical hits are highlighted with a dramatic camera zoom and a violent shake of the screen. Special attacks have cool animations that continue the visual trend of splashing color all over the darkness. The characters talk shit to their enemies. It was cool when Dante did it, and it's cool when the highwayman does it.
And of course, the narration. Darkest Dungeon has the best narration in gaming. Wayne June nails his performance. The narration perfectly captures the overwhelming despair, the elation of battle, the fatalist humor of a dead man directing other men to their own deaths. It's funny, it's scary, it makes you feel like a total bad ass, and there is nothing else like it.
Darkest Dungeon oozes with style. Red Hook makes some very out there decisions regarding the visuals and the audio but they bring it together confidently. The result is world that feels unique and authentic Darkest Dungeon absolutely deserves to be recognized for style.
A match is lit! A blazing star is born!
