Best New Character is already the first big wiff for their GOTY picks for me.
Not that Helmut Kruger won. That was the obvious pick. But that random generic Doom antagonistic was 3rd runner up over someone from Overwatch, someone from Witcher DLC, the titan from Titanfall 2 SP, Troy Baker as Troy Baker in Uncharted 4 or just about anything else. Doom has character. It didnt have characters.
Also Recore as a runner up in most disappointing. No one gave a shit about it pre release. It was made by a developer who has never made a good game since they founded themselves and a guy who left Capcom to be a scam artist. The writing was on the wall in giant letters it was gonna be middling.

I am actually happy Samuel Hayden got on there. I absolutely loved his voice and the casual reveal that this genius scientist is a 12 foot skeleton looking robot man who just walks around work like that. The one hologram you find of all the marines getting slaughtered and panicking in Hell while Hayden is just strolling along is badass.

There's an alternate universe out there where her fucking awesome storyline was the subject of the TV episodes and not relegated to two long journal collectibles.
I think Jeff would've totally brought it up more often during Day One. Curious if he brings it up again in the next few deliberations.

In my head Doom in spirit is a amazing 80's action movie in videogame form but Hayden isnt exactly Hans Gruber. He is more on the level of a big bad guy in one of the lesser Schwarzenegger movies you forget the name of.
At best he is the character Ronny Cox played in every movie / tv show.
I can't believe how long he managed to last.
Sadly we will probably never see a sequel. I don't believe it sold well and Remedy said they're working on something else.
Patrick was the contact and without him, no John Carpenter.

100% agreed about Palmer lucky being the hottest mess. Someone who supports white supremacists and their ideals is leagues worst than crying about a mediocre game like NMS.

It was a real roller-coaster for me from when the game was revealed to actually playing it and beating it.
"Man, Grim Reaper on a skateboard is fucking dumb and great"
"Wait a minute he sounds weird and says 'senpai' this is sketchy"
and then by the ending I was sold on him being Best New Character
He'll last far longer than any of us. All those preservatives.

Hayden is only really interesting if you consider him in the context of the game as a foil to the absurdity of the game itself. Same with basically everything in that game. DOOM is great.

I dont know who dissapointed me more. Vinny asking of the guy from mafia is like Felix from the bond films. Alex mentions the Felix charcter from the Brosnan films without knowing so. But Vinny is worse I think because he didnt know that Alex answered yes to his question.

but if you really think there's anything interesting at all about Overwatch you're out of your mind.
It's a fun game to play (allegedly) and that's about all it has going for it.
Edit: I'm surprised Vinny went with Von Emeric over Gaunter O'Dimm? Does O'Dimm appear in the base game? is that why?

Blood and Wine didn't really have any one stand out character (also only Vinny played it), the Overwatch cast are all super generic and there was nothing memorable about those other two. It just wasn't a strong year for stand out characters, although personally I would have thrown Donovan from Mafia 3 on their primarily because of the end of the game.
As for Recore, I haven't listened to the deliberations yet but I'd assume its on there because Brad and Jeff loved the start of the game and then it gets... Recore...

Barry Goodman was insufferable.
He's not, that's the university professor. He's the one who tell you where Yennefer is in White Orchard. But still surprised Vinny didn't go for Gaunter. He's one of the most terrifying villains in recent memory and certainly the best villain in the Witcher 3 including BaW.
