Yeah, finding out towards the end that Brad hadn't played SUPERHOT makes everything he said about that game click. No wonder he was so down it, he hasn't played the most innovative shooter in years.
I think that would make it worse. It's like they've learned nothing and get by for free.
Watching Brad play is part of the reason I won't play Hitman myself, despite buying it. I don't even want to see the game running anymore because it reminds me of his incompetence.
I've been a premium member since the start. The Hitman videos may be the worst content since those FarmVille videos. It's right up there with Leigh Alexander, Ian producing Unprofessional Fridays and I Love Monday's Question Of The Week.
Yeah, seemed it was going stay in third place. I was thinking there could be a case for it being hottest mess and suddenly Alex starts the ball rolling.
I'm still not sure what the fuck "Best Style" is. Every year, they have the same conversations for this category as they do for "Best Looking Game", since that category is emphatically not a technical category either. Seems redundant.
Also, I'm glad that the games chosen for Best Debut are actually new IPs (looking at you, Shadow of Mordor) and that they didn't arbitrarily exclude any games this time (looking at you, Journey.)
It's highly replayable, and if you really like those 2-3 hours that are just the main campaign levels you'll probably end up diving into the extra modes. I ended up spending 7 hours (picked it up last week) and will probably go back for some more down the line.
The thing that irks me about that game isn't the length of the main campaign, but how the challenges and endless mode were handled. Even putting aside the fact that the challenges just have you replay the main levels again with some tweaks, they make you do the levels in order every time, and you have to play quite a few of them to unlock a new challenge. Endless mode is a similar concept, I just want to see new arenas but you have to play them pretty thoroughly to keep unlocking them. Having to play the first half of the game over and over to see new challenges just adds monotony where there doesn't need to be. I don't like blanket statements, but Superhot makes a good argument for "fuck unlockables in games".
Despite what I just said that issue wasn't actually a huge deal for me though, and I think Superhot is a great game. It's immensely satisfying and feeds into an almost child-like power fantasy where few games can, and I mean that in a very good way.

My understanding of Best Styyyyyle is just the game they think had the best style, like the combination of a cool look, sound design, menus etc. Stuff that goes beyond it being a technical feat. Like, Superhot looks good, it has nice art design but it's not the best looking game.

It's not so much convoluted as it is nebulous, like a lot of their categories (the most fun/interesting ones imo). Yeah, stuff can arbitrarily make it in there, but in general I think it works for recognizing games that go above and beyond when it comes to presentation and/or establishing an interesting or unique atmosphere. There's a lot of games that thrive on that but don't necessarily impress when it comes to artistic direction or graphics.
I feel like best debut would benefit from being about best games from new studios instead of best non sequels. A lot of these games will reapear in the GOTY discussion anyway.
Nah man, Darkest Dungeon oozes so much style it's not even funny. Every part of that game fits into a grim hopeless sense of dread. The harsh shading, the lack of more discernible facial features on party members, the music, the narrator, I can't really think of any part that doesn't add to the feel of the game.
I'd have had it win against SuperHot for what it's worth.
has anyone played the original SuperHot for the first time AFTER beating the VR version? I have beaten the VR one but haven't touched the original game. I am curious if I would enjoy the game despite the lack of VR gameplay.
it ends in fucking maddeningly frustrating fashion as usual because he had really bad map awareness and not a great grasp on the mechanics of the game. Only Brad gets how cautious you have to be every step of the way ever since he started playing at home.
That's totally false, and that's what's frustrating about watching people play Hitman who don't grasp how it really works. You don't have to be careful at all. You can run right in front of people who are suspicious if you do it quickly enough. You can kill someone with a gun or a lethal throwable with no issues as long as you're not in a vision cone. You can outrun guards with automatic weapons and hide very easily.
Vinny poked around for 10 minutes waiting outside a room where all he had to do was throw the axe and make a run for the exit which was 10 seconds away from him. It would have been fine and all 4 of them ended up making things 10x more complicated than they needed to be. Even Jeff, who has spent the least time of all of them with the game, was arguably the most successful.
Don't get me wrong, watching these runs can be really funny. The chaos you can make in Hitman is amazing. And the fact that these guys like it so much despite their puddle-deep understanding of it makes the game even greater. Those of us who dove in headfirst and have learned everything about the game and its interactions have uncovered something amazing beyond it just being "funny," which has the side effect of making it almost physically painful to watch other people play it.
Love the Giant Bomb guys with all my heart, but I can understand the sentiment of not wanting to watch the Hitman videos. I still do, but not without wanting to tear my hair out at times, lol
Man I bet none of them remembered Far Cry Primal came out this year. It should at least get a "I just wanted to say my part" moment for at least one of the categories this year.

Yeah, listening to those arguments I wasn't really feeling like NMS was even a "hot mess".. it sounded more like something they were just disappointed with. Palmer Lucky going from VR coverboy to "disappeared" and Capcom apologizing almost monthly for a new fuck up seemed like bigger messes.

I figured that must've been the case when Vinny had to be pointed out where the target was so often, but then again I don't have color blindness and I still had a hard time seeing where they were.
I can't imagine Hitman having a color blindness friendly option, even though basically every game should have one.
I have to agree that Brad makes hitman videos incredibly frustrating. Why can't be like Dan and Jason who do the videos. Instead of the 1 guy devoid of any fun

What category would Primal realistically show up in? Nobody had any expectations so it's not Most Disappointing. It's not Best Looking. It's nowhere near the top 10. Please Stop, maybe?

Brad's hesitation to act has always been hilarious because it gets him in trouble more than it helps. Dan typically acts with such disregard, outside of the Sheik moment, he dies quickly and anti-climatically. Vinny has the right mix of impulsive decision making and a little bit of self preservation that results in gold almost every time he plays.

Yeah, sometimes they make the game seem way more complicated than it actually is. I was really surprised when I first played the game at how easy it was to escape tricky situations after watching them play the game all year long.
