Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

That's what I'm expecting. He's already laying the foundations.

It'll be fucking war if he tries to pull that shit. Brad will go nuclear and start utilizing those GOAT filibustering skills.

Any of them arguing against Battlefield'd art direction shows how little they actually know about art direction. Just because it's a realistic setting doesn't mean there isn't art direction.

That too. Was palmfacing pretty hard there, as if all they did in BF1 was just recreate photographs.

Best looking discussion was real dumb. Brad arguing against Uncharted because he's seen ruins and islands before but arguing for Doom as if it's anything more than generic hell and hallways. Also Jeff arguing for Battlefield on a technical level while then saying Uncharted is just facial capture when Uncharted has more art in a single room than all of Battlefield or most games on that list period.

Just face the facts. Uncharted is a kinda shit game and doesn't deserve awards.

That's what I'm expecting. He's already laying the foundations.

Jeff's already conceded Titanfall in best surprise, though - that could either lend some credence to your point, or, alternatively, be him knowing that he isn't gonna win that battle in terms of GOTY.

In 2015, when Mario Maker revitalized his interest in gaming for a time, he also had Dan to back him up.

Here, he could push for definite top 5, but I don't think he's got enough Brad in him to force it into #1.

I'm with Jeff about the
patching stuff. It's not really a clear cut thing that can be solved. Like for example I remember Gears 4 had a 10+GB patch on Day 1 and it was for multiplayer. The reason was that it would not fit on the disc. What do you do when the game won't fit on the disc?

Clearly it can be solved. A) the 'can't fit on disc' is an edge case. Most games don't have that problem. B) It wasa solved for 30+ years prior. C) It's not the GOTY awards' job to solve it, only to identify that it is bullshit that should stop.

Jeff ranting about
hanging himself rather than working as an arby's twitter guy
was hilarious

I can't tell if Brad's hypocrisy is just from obliviousness or he's Republican level shameless.

The latter. can't find the YouTube link but his filibusterer to get Destiny on the 2014 list was absolutely insane.

I'd argue that the best Witness moment is
your first environmental puzzle. It's probably slightly different for everyone, but my first one was in the desert area, andw hearing the sun ignite your cursor when you had it lined up just right was a genuine :O moment for me.

This moment works amazingly well if the first one you find is
the one on the mountaintop
. I think I put my controller down and literally said "Holy shit!" out loud.

Is it just me or has Brad been a lot more chill this year? It feels like the Jeff and Alex show instead of the Jeff and Brad show.

I'm more worried about Vinny's point that data usage is going up and up no matter if you choose digital or not, and data availability is going backwards. At some point ESA members are going to have to start lobbying against ISPs or this doesn't work anymore.

Brad's saving all his strength for the Doom filibuster

I really don't think he's going to have to fight very hard. I'm baffled that anyone thinks otherwise.

PS. I t was fun watching Jeff get increasinly more impatient during the Mario Maker video. He was constantly on the verge of saying "that's a terrible idea, and this is boring"

I could see Jeff going on a rant about having to judge games for the product you get in the box and finding a way to put Titanfall 2 and Doom on the same level because of that, resulting in a war for the number 1 spot and then Brad using that to say Overwatch should be way down the list since it only has multiplayer, etc.

I personally still think Doom is a clear lock for 1 but 2-5 placement will be interesting.

Jeff may personally prefer Titanfall to take it over Doom, but he won't fight the entire staff over it like he did with Mario Maker. His love for TF isn't like Mario Maker at all, and he loves Doom just as much as Brad does (didnt Jeff mention having played through Doom like 3 times or something?).

His personal list might show TF2 on top (though I dont think that's a given), but he won't die on a hill to keep Doom from number one. He loves it way too much, and knows how much of a miracle it is that Doom is as good it was.

I don't think Jeff will choose TF2 over Doom. He gushed over Doom in a way he hasn't since Mario Maker. He merely "liked" Titanfall 2 like he liked Let It Die. Doom gonna win.

Lots of people calling for Titanfall 2 over Doom as Jeff's pick - anyone have Superhot in his top 3?

I think it's likely... and I'm really wondering if that's why Brad is shitting on Superhot at every turn, like he's worried that somehow he's going to have to fight against it to get Doom higher on the site list. But I just don't see anything that could knock Doom out of the top spot at this point, even Jeff's babies.

I think it's pretty clear at this point Doom will be their #1 seeing as though it is Brad, Vinny & Drew's top game as well...plus Jeff also loved the hell out of it so it will be his personal 1 or 2.

I can see him putting up a decent fight to get TF2 in the top 3 though.

That's straight up wrong. I don't know where you were in the two weeks around TF2's launch, but he loooooooooves that game.

I remember how Hitman was the best video game of all time/of the year, in basically every fucking video.

Top 3:

1. Doom
2. Overrated
3. Inside

Edit:

Also, Dan. Better step your game way up if you want Stardew Valley in your top 10.

Neither Jeff nor Brad could finish Pony Island...

This is remarkable, it's a two hour game. There's like one hard puzzle that you can just screw around with til it works.

That said, I loved it, but it probably still doesn't break top three on that list.

Neither Jeff nor Brad could finish Pony Island...

I didn't finish it either, had the exact same reaction they talked about where I hit a hard puzzle and was just like, "Nah, I'm done." The game had incredible momentum and I was engrossed but then I just felt like I hit a brick wall at 100MPH. Very jarring and completely took me out of the experience.

I've also given up on Frog Fractions 2 for the same reason. The humor and clever ideas are great, but they are too few and far between among actual puzzle / adventure game stuff.

Remember that these lists were made after the deliberations took place, when the guys had more time to play the discussed games before submitting. It's possible the talks they have during the podcast influence their finalized lists.

It's like Superhot hit Brad's car or something, I might be misinterpreting his tone, but he's seemed super dismissive of that game throughout -- even before he played it.

You gotta go into these with a strategy. Even if he loves it, he can't leave any holes in his wall of DOOM

He also played through Titanfall 2's campaign three times in addition to enjoying the MP. I really hope Jeff fights for TF2 because it deserves it.

If DOOM really does get the #1 spot then it deserves to be there. It was a phenomenal game. So much fun.

The one game I don't think deserves it is Overrated.

I always love their Mario Maker streams but thought this one was the first Christmas Specialtacular video that I wouldn't like after about twenty minutes into it but then I got caught up in it. Good stuff yet again. Loving this GOTY week.

As for the Doom, Overwatch, Hitman trio. Any of those being number one is fine with me (I'd be fine with whatever they pick anyway tbh). All incredible in their own ways. Personally, I lean Hitman with Doom very close behind and I've played more Overwatch than anything else this year with no signs of stopping. It's been a great year for video games.

Y'all so edgy.

I wish I cared about the metal aesthetics Doom has. Or I had the bandwidth or space to download all those patches. The last couple of years, I havent really connected with their tastes in games any more. Doesn't help that they don't really care about handheld stuff.

Dan's Austin Walker Memorial Gambit for Stardew Valley worked for Best Surprise, but he fired his best bullets. Stardew Valley's not making the top 10.

I'm surprised by how many people on here dislike DOOM. It's fucking great, even if it ain't my number 1 choice. I have to respect what Id made.

Doom is great, I really like it. But like Jeff has kinda been hinting at, Brad is super blind to the shortcomings it has. Plus it's being shoehorned into categories it has no business being in like Best New Character.

I like Doom, but there is at least one section I can think of that makes me never want to play through it again. It's in my top 10, but probably somewhere around the middle.

I actually uninstalled Doom recently because of all the patches and their size. I don't give a fuck about your new multiplayer maps, stop trying to force it down my throat.

Honestly, I wish I loved Doom as much as the GB crew and most of everyone here did, in my playthrough I was just willing it to end. The gore nest enemy encounters just seemed uninspired to me and the glory kill system just became tedious very quickly.

Hearing the guys gush over it over the past few days has made me want to give it more of a chance in a 2nd playthrough though.

I told you guys Brad likes the
DOOM
more than
Hitman
.

I don't think the results of Best Surprise can be extrapolated into GOTY.

The gulf of expectations between DOOM and Hitman was absolutely massive. While both had bad PR going in, DOOM was naturally assumed to be a trash fire for months. Like, an actively disgusting mark on that series' legacy. For it to turn around and be the best that series has ever been - that was a massive shock. Bethesda spent all their time with that game hyping multiplayer & SnapMap... making people assume the solo mode was going to be even more underwhelming than those two modes.

Hitman had the luxury of coming from an esteemed developer, who had at least made decent Hitman games in the previous decade. The release stuff seemed clunky, but the game itself always looked like a good take on Hitman. For that game to be great isn't a huge shock.

I'm not sure if Hitman can walk away with GOTY. Jeff clearly likes it, but will throw it under a bus for Superhot. Vinny clearly gets it, but might not be willing to go the extra distance. Dan loves it, but it isn't even topping his personal list. DOOM seems like a more natural consensus choice right now, though I feel like it suffers from some of the same flaws that can be lobbied at SuperHot (namely being a one-note experience). If GOTY gets heated, I could see that angle coming into play.

I hate that because I had it on my games SSD and the file size is absurdly huge. Some games on Steam let you only download certain components. I wish Doom let me only keep the campaign.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Most upsetting thing as a GB fan for two years now has been how hard they've slept on Witcher 3. Gaunter O'Dimm is objectively one of the best villains in gaming ever. That's why I think they lost a lot with Austin leaving, most of them prioritize gameplay over everything to such an extreme extent that they flat out ignore other really amazing things going on.

I am with you, but it isn't really surprising. Never forget that these awards are purely GB's favorites, don't get hung up on wanting or expecting anything beyond. (Only Vinny ever had any hope of giving it a proper chance anyway)

And kudos to Vinny for putting the time in and for Alex to sit with him on some of it. They made a solid case in day 1 for the game. That ship sailed in 2015 anyway for recognition among the rest.

Fuck it, the best Witness moment for me was
realizing the tunnel you emerge from at the very beginning was an environmental puzzle.

Fucking genius.

I like how the narrative in this thread has moved from Vinny and Dan being team Overwatch and pushing it to win to Jeff trying to torpedo DOOM

it isn't going to happen. accept DOOM into your hearts
That wasn't super surprising seeing as he
barely touched Hitman outside of the videos they did until the very end of the year.
that's not true at all,
he's said that he's played a ton of hitman since their video series ended
