Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Speaking of soundtracks, I think they should have two music categories. One for best original music (i.e. original scores) and one for best use of licensed music.

Agreed. In particular I've been impressed by the covers of pop songs featured in this year's video game marketing.

this was a joke

Mordor was cool and worthwhile but yeah, remember when everyone thought the nemesis system was going to be A Thing that other games would take and run with?

lol oops

I think Shadow of Mordor is legitimately bad, but the nemesis system stands as the most original part in an incredibly unoriginal game. It didn't work for me in Mordor because at the end of the day, you're just fighting another fuckin' orc. Maybe it would be a cool system if it was applied to an array of diverse characters or something

Nice to see Dragon Quest Builders get a little staff love. That game is really delightful, and I found the last "world" sincerely affecting. Nice surprise this year, might even be my GOTY.

The only issue that I have with them bringing it up is that Brad is still leading people to believe that losing stuff between chapters is some sort of hinderance and ruins the game. Makes me wonder if he even went past the first chapter, because that's how I thought until I pushed forward and realized that 90% of the stuff they take away is meaningless in the next chapter.

Best remake spoilers: I really wish Jason would've fought harder for
God Eater. I get that none of the rest of the crew enjoyed it, but they didn't enjoy Twilight Princess either. I think he could've gotten it up there over TP if he'd fought harder. Odin Sphere or God Eater should've won.

Just realized they completely omitted Unravel from their best graphics discussion. That game looked fantastic. Shame.

I agree. They were all jazzed about
Twilight Princess not needing waggle anymore but, that was the case THE DAY IT CAME OUT if you chose the GameCube version. I haven't played God Eater either but their reasoning for TP was pretty weak.

Hey I'm not going to argue that overwatch has some amazing writing or anything. :p
I agree with Jeff in that every time the characters talked I like them less and less. It's all just "LET'S DO IT TEAM!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!" or "MAN, REMEMBER THAT TIME?" I think Ana is the only character I like when she talks. Actually Ana is the only Overwatch character I have no problem with.

Today's videos are kinda boring...

Anyway, I just finished the Infinite Warfare campaign and holy shit... Between Doom, TF2 and COD we had an amazing year for Single Player FPS

Of the three I think COD was my favorite one overall.

Doom is probably the most fun gameplay (I really need to finish it some day)

TF2 was the most innovative

COD was my favorite overall package between gameplay, set pieces and story.

It's giving me some serious Battlestar Galactica vibes.

2014 was a pretty terrible year for non-nintendo video games.

Like every single publisher was caught off guard by the fact people actually wanted to buy consoles and games on those consoles.

I forget what the top3 where. I remember they didnt really touch Dragon Age.

Fixed.

2014 was great if you had a Wii U, which is something not many people experienced. Best Mario Kart, sequel to best character action game, potential best Smash, Shovel Knight (also on PC and 3DS), Tropical Freeze, Capitan Todd.

But yeah, not really a good year for people who don't play/like Nintendo stuff. I can't remember the order but at least some of them liked what they had played of Bayonetta 2.

I'm with Dan on this one and that frightens me.

Games Giant Bomb likes:
- games with guns
- games with bullshit collectibles
- games with bullshit busywork to make the "numbers go higher"
- games with old ass graphics because #oldschool
- games with DOOM in the title

Fixed.

2014 was amazing. Playing Mario Kart while watching the Euro Cup? Such a great experience. None other than Nintendo could release the best games of multiple franchises in one year. It was phenomenal but of course Giant Bomb didn't care for stupid reasons. But Far Cry 4 is so much different than Far Cry 3, am I right?

So without any spoilers (I haven't listened to these yet), how are the deliberations so far?
They go pretty much as expected. Brad and Jeff talk, Dan talks too sometimes, Vinny is nice, the rest sits there. Hottest mess was the best category so far I'd say because they really worked through something there and they take a stand I will always love them and appreciate for. The rest is meh if I'm being honest. It's pretty obvious where things are heading. In the wrong direction.

Oh and best VR experience might be the worst GOTY category ever.

I'm going to make an F2P game where you go out on fetch quests to retrieve rare guns from locations such as abandoned towns in the old west, sunken pirate ships, forgotten battlefields, etc. You're given the assignment to seek out 3 of a certain type of gun on each of these levels. In order to "unearth" the guns you click as fast as you can on the spot where you're digging and the faster you click the more dirt is cleared away, which is represented by a series of increasing numbers. You can also buy a click accelerator with real money that lets you clear dirt away twice as fast or you can use real money to buy the guns you need to fulfill each quest. Once you complete a quest you receive a gun as a reward, and you can use real money to upgrade that gun from common to "elite" status or you can break the gun down into a number of click accelerators based on the value of that particular gun. Oh and it will have early 3D era graphics.

I'll call it GunClicker: Prophet of DOOM.

See you all at 2017's GOTY awards.

I mean Mario Maker was GotY last year. I guess you could count that under old graphics but a 2D Nintendo platformer won GotY.

Is there a limit to how many times a single game can be nominated for best moment?

Because Inside, Doom, Superhot and Titanfall 2 have like five each I can think of off the top of my head

Bayonetta 2 is better than every game I've played the last 2 years aside from possibly MGS V.

Yeah, my favorite moments in those games probably aren't the moments that would get picked. They're smaller moments, not the one big "WHOA" moment that they kinda want you to pick.

Gonna be a fun category. Pulling for The Witness - in a year of great moments, that one still resonates as an all time favorite. Loved hearing the guys talk about their experiences earlier in the year too. Would be a big spoiler, though.

The Witness has a lot too, but they are really personal moments of discovery I think.

The obvious one is
finding an environmental puzzle for the first time
but I think the biggest one for me is
in the Mountain and finding the puzzles that start to glitch out. I just said "oh fuck you" out loud

Captain Toad was a pretty barebones games.

Captain Toad was exactly what it should have been. It got it, it explored the mechanics as far as it could, and then it got out again. More games should learn from its restraint and focus.

Doom has two strong candidates within the first ten minutes.

There's no way that some super subjective Hitman moment doesn't make it on the list- hell, depending on when the recording dates lined up, I might be hoping that Vinny's Hitmas run takes the prize.

They had to have recorded Hitmas first.
Helmut Krueger doesn't win character of the year without Hitmas I believe.

Mario Maker is like the one right decision they have made and only because Brad gave up in the end. The evil wanted to win but for once it lost. That's why it came back for revenge and 2016 happened.

People who don't like Doom already getting salty... Friday is going to be a shitshow
I'm ready for the salt lol. I mean the sad thing here is that everyone pretty much agrees DOOM wins. There's not going to be a fight anyway. That's a bummer just from the entertainment side of this.

oti's just doing a bit and nobody's had the heart to tell him it isn't landing
I love that you're so direct. Are you German?

So glad they brought up the solemn pop song cover in videogame ad trope. It's fucking annoying and not just relegated to videogames, in the UK it has been happening for years (usually a church choir or kids singing) and I hate it so much. Game adverts are complete trash anyway, and they make it worse with this. I mute ads whenever they come on just to avoid as much of this cynical shit as possible.
Its been happening a lot in movie trailers too. Between that and "tinkly piano version of main theme" i cant wait for this shit to stop. I dont know a single person who likes it anymore anytime its brought up its just to clown on the trend

Best moment for me would definitely be The Witness
the challenge
. Or maybe the ending to Oxenfree, got chills from that.

OH, and if Hitsmas counts for Hitman then I'd be fine with Vinny's run taking it. Or hell any moment from that run. Pure gold, a true Hitsmas miracle.

I'd argue that the best Witness moment is
your first environmental puzzle. It's probably slightly different for everyone, but my first one was in the desert area, andw hearing the sun ignite your cursor when you had it lined up just right was a genuine :O moment for me.

I expect Overwatch to inspire a good fight, but Doom will win.

I don't even think Overwatch will make it into the top 5 at this point. Jeff and Brad seem way too down on it. I mean Brad doesn't even have it in his top 10 lol. Dan will argue for it but they will force his hand by allowing Stardew into the top 10 instead or something. And Alex won't stand much of a chance arguing for it either.

Its gonna be the Jeff and Brad show.

1) DOOM
2) Hitman
3) The Witness
4) Inside
5) Titanfall 2

The second half of The Last Guardian is basically best moments sprinkled throughout.

I can't tell if I'm in those spots yet (I know I passed where the E3 demo was) but I'm interested to go back and listen to best looking to hear if anyone makes a case for it. Despite running badly on a base PS4 being a huge knock on it, some scenes are gorgeous.

I don't know if that hits for me because
I basically knew from the moment you leave the first room. I was just taking everything in, looking around and saw that the corridor I just left had a little bump above the door and some moving about made it look like the line I just used to open the door and I though "oh, cool" and tried to use it But didn't understand how.

When I got to the clay pot building then I realised how to activate them when I was on the roof and then I went back and grabbed every one I had noticed on my way to that point (which was only like 3 or something). It was a cool moment figuring it out but for me it wasn't some "ah ha!" but more a "oh that's cool, why can't I do the thing? *an hour later* oh that is how you do it. Ok".

I can totally see how that can be a great moment for people but I think me looking around too much from the get go kind of spoiled it because then I saw it everywhere and kept my eye out rather than having it be an almost subliminal thing until it clicks into place.

DOOM is basically perfect for all of them. Brad loves that series and has bored us to death with this UPF segments, Alex loves this whole metal thing, Jeff loves dem gunz, Drew likes shooters too and Jason likes it too I think. That's great and all but it's boring. That's why I launched my #NeverDOOM campaign and we have four members so far thanks for asking.

If GB was a bit different and Brad/Jeff, who are unquestionably the two most important players in this GOTY deliberations game, had more different tastes this whole thing could be more entertaining.

Also add in that I don't care about Singleplayer shooters at all but that doesn't matter for their awards.

I'm fine with DOOM winning GOTY. I enjoyed it, but it wouldn't be my choice. But I wish that every one of these podcasts didn't have at least an hour of DOOM raving.

Day 4 category: Best Game that isn't DOOM

Spoiler:
Brad: I actually think you can make a case that it's DOOM here.

Yeah, definitely super subjective, because everyone's version of that moment is different. There are definitely clusters where people experienced it most often, but it's hard to nail down in a satisfying way for everyone.

You still got a ways to go if you just passed where the E3 demo was.

I'm surprised by how many people on here dislike DOOM. It's fucking great, even if it ain't my number 1 choice. I have to respect what Id made.

Yeah, Doom looks nailed on.

Definitely will check Doom out. I played the demo and it was alright I guess but I'm picking up what the GB crew are putting down. I mean, Doom is just a bunch of ashes as Alex said, awfully simple pixelated ones at that and sounds like they've done some actual demonic possession or channelling to reimagine this for the modern day and done the Doom of your wild imagination, from zero to hero.
