Oh, totally. The top 5 games, though maybe not the order, is pretty clear, so I've made peace with the fact that Inside won't be in it and The Witness will be below Doom. I'm expecting:

1) Doom
2) Hitman
3-4) Overwatch, The Witness
5-7) Titanfall 2, Inside, Superhot
8-10) Uncharted 4, ???, ???

It's basically Pseudointellectualism: The Game. It says nothing about much of anything, but does it in such an artful way that it convinces others it is actually saying something profound. Inside is a dumb game that has convinced people it is smart. People are afraid to criticize it for fear of looking like a rube.

No. Jeff's taste is awful, he thinks Last of Us and Witcher 3 suck too.

Red Dead, Last of Us, and Witcher 3 have basically the best characterization in AAA gaming and Jeff hates them all.

I'm late on this but it's pretty obvious, from those games that you picked, that Jeff does not give a shit about characterisation or story or world building or whatever unless they're accompanied by tight gameplay. Remember, the dude grew up on the 2600 and arcades - he has different priorities. As much as I love RDR, the shooting and even the mission design is mediocre at best. I gave up on Last of Us because of it's sloppiness (though I want to go back one day) and I'm reluctant to even start the Witcher because of what I've heard about the combat. It really isn't difficult to see why someone wouldn't like these games, but I guess it's easier to feign outrage.

I vehemently disagree with you about The Last of Us, but I also agree with your criticisms of RDR and the complaints about TW3's combat. I love those games despite their issues. I totally get why someone might not like any or all three of them. What I don't get is the impulse to judge taste as right or wrong (which is what you're responding to here). The idea that art is anything but subjective is ridiculous, and the insistence on "right" and "wrong" makes no sense. I think Inside is immaculate. Some people hate it. I think that Overwatch is boring and I don't care about the characters. Some people think it's the best multiplayer shooter ever. That's fine. Why is disagreement something to be corrected?

This looks about right to me, if today is any indication the fight for 5-7 will be glorious. Last two slots will probably be Firewatch and I could see Alex fighting to get Darkest Dungeon or Thumper in at 10.
