I am unsure what meaning you're taking from my post but I assume it's less jokey than I intended.
Though if Dan did actually come out and say "I know the KKK was a thing, but is it still a thing?" I don't know that my brain would actually respond. Like a synapse might fire or something, but I wouldn't lose my shit in surprise.
Yours and a bunch of the other posts above came off more like people being consdescending and weirdly projecting their own insecurities on Dan than jokey but whatever.
Yeah, I think memorable moments wise the game is definitely frontloaded, the bossfights in DOOM are also basically just OK, they look neat, but mechanically they're nothing special. (although to be fair the bar for FPS boss fights is very low)
they didn't even give it a quick look because it hit during the austin transition time i think. not that i know whether austin even played it but it is TOTALLY his jam
I will be very surprised if it makes number 10, Dan and Brad have it on their personal lists, but they were even pretty negative on it there. I almost wondered why they included it.
Hitman is weird with me. It's great, but it's almost like my favorite multiplayer game. Sitting there and just playing it doesn't do much for me, but have some friends round, some beers and taking turns having runs while mocking each other and it is amazing.
My guess when it comes to the love for DOOM and Inside is this:
DOOM pushes you to be aggressive in every encounter no matter what. It strikes a balance between being on the brink of Game Over and feeling awesome in a kinda-old-but-also-new way seeing how other shooter games over the last few years have been about cover and just slowing down the action in general.
What Brad said about THAT Inside moment made me realize that I completely forgot about the instant realization at that moment:
this boy is dead and everything you did to escape was pointless
I get that, it's cool, surprising and doesn't happen often. But the ending sequence is so "out there" it tries to hide the game's shortcomings like the mildly interesting puzzles at best (the gameplay is nothing to write home about) with a shock moment it doesn't deserve, it doesn't resolve (fair enough, but there are better ways to do it) and frankly isn't really worth to talk about at length.
We don't get games likes this that often and not every game has to be waifu Roboter wars but I just don't understand the love and passion this insanely high polished but ultimately flat experience gets. And I haven't heard a good argument why it deserves the praise it gets. All I'm hearing is "but it's so good!!!" and "yeah it is".
The ending of Inside was good but after playing games like Flower, Journey, Abzu and Entwined (can't remember for sure if it is an example), it at the same time felt like
yet another 'power fantasy' ending. There was more to it that stopped it from just being a cliche but the structure is still a bit overdone.
Then I am pretty they didn't "beat" the game without getting a lot of help from other people or looking up the answers.
There is no way someone can be that dense as to not notice the hundreds of clues littered through out the world, some of which are extremely obvious, while still being "clever" enough to solve the puzzles all the way to the end.

I think they're two very different skills. I'm with Vinny on the Witness. I would never have noticed the world puzzles if I made it that far as I didn't care for the world. I was usually looking at a webpage or something while walking between puzzles.
I kinda feel bad for not feeling anything when realising the environmental puzzles in The Witness.
After leaving the beginning area, there's a hill lookong over the water and a dock that immediately points out one of these puzzles and I immediately saw it, probably after 5 minutes of starting the game.
When they were talking earlier in the year about "that moment" I couldn't figure out what they were talking about because it didn't impact me at all.
However their arguments for it being on the Best Moments list are very well talked out.
I'll be pissed if Hitman wins over Doom. Hitman seems cool but it has a serious case of "the giant bomb effect". Its fun for them to stream and its fun for people to watch but is it really THAT fun for the average joe who just plays games by himself?
Mario Maker won last year because of this and I think it misrepresented the game.

They've said time and time again during this year that it is their awards, its not for the average Joe. Like almost every other outlet it is completely subjective so if they had the most fun with Hitman, it will and should win.

Maybe I followed the game too closely before release, but I always suspected this to be in there. That's why they put so much effort into the environments. So yeah, that didn't really blow my mind either, but it's still cool.

I've actually just heard back from the Average Joer's GOTY and it sounds like FIFA 17 has just pipped Call of Duty and Pokemon GO this year after Super Mario Run was DQ'd for "being too expensive for mobile angry emoji".

I saw it on top of the golden building in the desert area, which was the first area I explored. I actually thought it would require more effort to do it for example sunshine has to be perfectly lined up since the puzzles in that area were about lighting. So I was kinda of disappointed after realizing how easy it was.
Honestly I think Dan probably skipped all those tree brach puzzles. No one can still not realize the environmental ones after that.

Well if its that awesome then it deserves to be a serious contender. Their Mario Maker win last year still irks me though and I just get the impressiom that it's heading that way again this year with Hitman.
I vehemently disagree with you about The Last of Us, but I also agree with your criticisms of RDR and the complaints about TW3's combat. I love those games despite their issues. I totally get why someone might not like any or all three of them. What I don't get is the impulse to judge taste as right or wrong (which is what you're responding to here). The idea that art is anything but subjective is ridiculous, and the insistence on "right" and "wrong" makes no sense. I think Inside is immaculate. Some people hate it. I think that Overwatch is boring and I don't care about the characters. Some people think it's the best multiplayer shooter ever. That's fine. Why is disagreement something to be corrected?
I think you're agreeing with me but yes just to make sure you are correct, if you're arguing that something is objectively good instead of making an actual case for the game you've already lost.
