Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Why? Seriously, I don't get it. Because it didn't have an Arcade Mode or a Story Mode at launch?

Because despite having the amazing controls that SF always has, the gameplay has lost that identity and steered towards a faster pace, losing some of the weight that gave SF a more tactical approach. It got more eSportsy and anime-fighting with too easy long strings and corner carries.

I'll do timestamps like I did last year.

Does anyone have that image with each day's duration?
That's probably the duration of the free version:

Also, thanks!

Either that or hottest mess. I'd say hottest mess.

What other dissapointments have there been this year? Mario Maker 3DS?

Nah, SF5 is disappointment, NMS is hottest mess. That's more in line with their expectations and frankly, with reality.

No way in hell did the GB crew think that deeply about SF or any other fighting game out there.

Also, I vastly prefer SFV to SFIV. Personal taste and all.

It launched with a very small number of characters, and it costs a fortune to add additional characters, costumes, and stages. Then at the end of two seasons of characters, it's still missing classic characters like E. Honda and Blanka.

It also didn't work for a long time because of server issues, and the game still goes down for a long time when they add a new character.

What you're saying is that it's a mess.

There's not really any more downtime than any other primarily multiplayer game, also I'm not sure anyone really misses E. Honda and Blanka.

I won't miss him getting a game in the top 10 that no one else gave a fuck about because they took pity on the new guy.
That same year the GOTY went to a game most of the site gave less than half a fuck about because two raving lunatics were yelling louder than everyone else (and no one else really cared what's going to win in the end).

Oh, they certainly didn't =)

that's just my opinion, because I see a lot of people talking about content, and I think that game's problems are far more complex than that meme.

People don't give legs to multiplayer-centric games because of content. And I think a lot of people got fed up of being humiliated at a quick pace and did not recommend the game to friends. Opposite to Overwatch.

I don't even like Overwatch and played so much SFV this year that got to play against Daigo locally. Still, I can see why, despite having an even bigger scene and promotion with Twitch, SFV will die sooner than IV. The game does not have the weight that gave SF identity and perceived accessibility.

SFV may be easier to do inputs and target combos but the past entries did not push the beginners to a corner to be bullied, like many anime or 3D fighters do.

That characteristic made SF, since SFII, the Number One fighting game franchise.

Hopefully Monster Hunter makes it onto someone's list (Might have to rely on one of the guests). I thought that they could make a feature of it this year since Jason and Drew liked MH4U, but Jason got burned out and jumped to God Eater.
Maybe if there is a Switch version.

Also, posting some stuff that didn't make it into E3 gifs.

Whilst you can argue the pace of the game is slightly more in line with super turbo than IV I have a hard time seeing how it's less tactical. If fact I'd say the removal of ridiculous option selects, free escapes and most vortexes make it a much fairer game.

By the way, have they confirmed when the first episode will drop? Don't remember how it was the previous years.

On Doom, my podcast recorded our GOTY stuff a couple of weeks back and Doom didn't make my top 5, having only played it on PS4 I enjoyed but didn't love it.

I upgraded my PC last week and picked up Doom there and holy shit I wish I had done that earlier in the year.

Oh, they certainly didn't =)

Meme? Really? It has blatantly obvious content issues which are very real issues for anyone who isn't a hardcore fighting game player. It has more complex issues too, but dismissing the game's tiny amount of content as a meme is just nuts.

I agree with you on a deep level. You jump from execution to tactics faster. But on the general consumer level, I'd argue it's one of the worst for newcomers because you get much less time to learn. You have to be committed to study the game. While the past games made fun more accessible.

Of course we can argue that SF or any other fighting game is not made to be accessible. But that first layer was what made SF such a huge commercial and critical success through the years. Maybe was time to abandon that. But Capcom should not be surprised with sales and with numbers of newcomers in 2-3 years. That's what happens with Tekken or Guilty Gear, and that's ok.

Maybe meme was a strong word. I don't want to dismiss it. By calling it a meme I meant that those content problems are being treated as the staple for why that game performed worse than its mainline predecessor with a much more comfortable economic condition to arrive at market.

And I think that when a game is truly great in terms of how its gameplay is designed, specially a multiplayer-centric one, it becomes a phenomenon of word of mouth and people don't mind technical issues and lack of content. They just want to be part of that fun zeitgeist.

That was true at launch, but now it has more story content than any SF game ever had. It has no arcade mode, that's basically the only thing people apparently really want. It's kind of a meme.

Rooting for Overwatch, but know that Hitman or DOOM will take it. I'll settle for Overwatch in 3rd. They didn't seem as into XCOM 2 as they were the first, so I doubt it'll make the top 10.

Yes this is the exact reasoning that Jeff, known MLG champion, will surely use

Guys I'm going to go out on a limb with some predictions

-Alex brings up a game just to mention it
-Jeff decides that a discussion or decision is over without it actually happening
-Brad quadruples down on some point as if it's religious dogma and then three days later uses the directly opposing argument when it's convenient
-Vinny concedes a point when he was making the most sense, just to be nice
-Jeff dismisses some beloved game out of hand because it didn't appeal to his tastes, acts befuddled that other people are nominating it and tries to shut it down and move on as fast as possible
-A category ends with an inexplicable "I have to listen to this to hear how they hell they decided this" decision because nobody can agree on what the category actually means, or they arbitrarily decide that it means something different this year because ???
-Brad goes "Oh come on" and basically argues that he's entitled to one category win because someone else was happy with an outcome
-Jeff gets a game in a prime spot on the list that only he cares about and nobody really argues against it
-Most Disappointing Game once again devolves into a semantics battle of whether a game is bad or whether it's just disappointing or whether that matters this year, as well as someone arguing that they personally weren't excited for it so it can't be disappointing - the final result is baffling
-Brad's arguments for or against a game begin to get so heated that he starts exaggerating claims to the point of pure falsehoods
-Someone introduces a joke category purely for a single thing they wanted to recognize
-Drew speaks up once to say his piece and then disappears into the background

-An entire podcast goes by where Jason offers no real opinion on anything being discussed
-A game being "another one of those" will be used as an excuse to cut it from a list

I'm going to have to stay strong during these podcasts.

I see Doom taking the top spot. Its one thing to have Jeff for a game. Its one thing to have Brad for a game. Having both is too OP for any of the others to get a game to the top. No one is going to say shit against Doom (If they do the strength of the single player will be too strong). Hitman gets No 2 and Overwatch gets 3. Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian will be way way down the list if they make it all. Likewise FFXV.

Be interesting to see what games get thrown out by Jeff like he threw out The Order 1886 for best graphics that one time because it did not fill the whole screen lol

I'm glad to see that called out, not that I didn't enjoy the discussion and totally understand the final results they came too -- but I was certain The Order would be a lock there, and it was like the first thing cut. I can't think of anything that super dismissive before in previous discussions, perhaps that one year Alex phoned in and had that Mario game cut from under him, that might have been the roughest cut I can remember.

I wish Danny could have teamed up with Drew in at least one GOTY battle of wills over one game, preferably last year for Dirt Rally. That game deserved top 5 easily. It was the "Doom" of racing sims. A franchise that lost its way came back with a brilliant, pure game that revitalized the entire genre.

Drew is clearly the racing sim expert but is too quiet to ever give that entire genre proper due when amazing games do come out. Instead, we get Jeff, the car "enthusiast" who seems to kind of hate cars, to spearhead all racing game discussions. So anytime a proper racing game comes out that is optomized for a wheel, you get someone who thinks racing wheels are stupid for all racing fames. Probably because he probably tried driving with one for two laps back in Forza 3 days, gave up, and happily dismissed them outright for the rest of his life. It's like trying to play some complex PC RTS mapped to a DS4 controller and complaing the controls don't feel right. Some games, especially in the sim genre require specific controllers to experience them. Thank god for Vinny and Drew.

I know this is a small bone to pick but it is annoying how their staff often has the diversity to represent large swaths of gaming genres, but a few of them get buried due to Jeff's opinion alone. Austin's call out of Jeff on RDR was so satisfying last year.

I wish we'd had more Jeff/Austin crossover during Austin's time here. They seemed to have pretty good chemistry.

Austin was great on the Bombcast/Beastcast because he actually brought some interesting views to the table. On Waypoint he is the leader and it just doesn't have the same effect; stopped listening a few weeks ago.
