Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

With all the internet hate mob stuff surrounding it there's no way NMS isn't both hottest mess and most disappointing game of the year.
Hottest mess probably, but I'd be willing to be the internet's reaction to it will win over the game itself. The GB crew never seemed super bummed about the game but they were disgusted by the internet response.

GB have never been one to side with hate mobs.

Guys I'm going to go out on a limb with some predictions

-Alex brings up a game just to mention it
-Jeff decides that a discussion or decision is over without it actually happening
-Brad quadruples down on some point as if it's religious dogma and then three days later uses the directly opposing argument when it's convenient
-Vinny concedes a point when he was making the most sense, just to be nice
-Jeff dismisses some beloved game out of hand because it didn't appeal to his tastes, acts befuddled that other people are nominating it and tries to shut it down and move on as fast as possible
-A category ends with an inexplicable "I have to listen to this to hear how they hell they decided this" decision because nobody can agree on what the category actually means, or they arbitrarily decide that it means something different this year because ???
-Brad goes "Oh come on" and basically argues that he's entitled to one category win because someone else was happy with an outcome
-Jeff gets a game in a prime spot on the list that only he cares about and nobody really argues against it
-Most Disappointing Game once again devolves into a semantics battle of whether a game is bad or whether it's just disappointing or whether that matters this year, as well as someone arguing that they personally weren't excited for it so it can't be disappointing - the final result is baffling
-Brad's arguments for or against a game begin to get so heated that he starts exaggerating claims to the point of pure falsehoods
-Someone introduces a joke category purely for a single thing they wanted to recognize
-Drew speaks up once to say his piece and then disappears into the background

Are you the Matrix.

Is this the Matrix.

Between the messaging, the surrounding shitstorm, Sony execs throwing Hello Games under the bus... it's getting that Hottest Mess.

Jeff and Jason were way more excited for Street Fighter than anyone was for NMS, though.

It's no Street Fighter V tho

Check steam reviews, SFV isn't even close to the massive amount of disappointment and resentment NMS brought up in people.

I feel like most people had already stopped caring about SFV by the time it released. When NMS came out it was like hundreds of thousands of people got blindsided all at once.

Not sure why you think this is relevant?
If GB based their awards on steam opinions the deliberations would be a lot shorter.

This is GBs goty though, not the internets.

But this is GB's GotY list and not the Steam Awards. If anything the NMS outrage has a much bigger chance of winning Hottest Mess.

Lol you guys haven't been listening to the podcasts if you think NMS is getting hottest mess. They've thought the reactions have been overblown from the start and haven't given much of a shit, and when it comes up they rightly condemn the death threats being sent to the devs. I highly doubt they validate that shit at all with a single negative award, whereas Jeff and Jason are frequently really upset by SFV's problems.

If you see NMS win Hottest Mess it'll be because of their disgust at the internet hate mob. Not the games launch itself.

Yep.

Yeah. I think Mario Maker 3DS will be the most disappointing, even though the semantics of "biggest disappointment" will be probably be argued again because I doubt anyone planned on getting it or expecting much. Still, unless you read about that thing throughly before release, discovering how little is in that $40 package is guaranteed to be laughably underwhelming and come in under expectations. I at least thought that shit let you type in level codes, but nope. I think the fact it's such a sad version of their 2015 goty will hammer it home.

It'll definitely be in the running but I think SFV will still take it.

Doom will win, but y'all are unprepared for the combined passion Brad and Jeff have for The Witness. I could see it ranking higher than Hitman.

Oh for sure. Jeff seemed to like The Witness to the point where he'll probably argue for it to be #1. Hitman is exactly the kind of game he'll eviscerate if it comes down to that vs The Witness.

Brad is the key to this year, he's the only one who got really into all games that could win IMO (Witness, Doom, Hitman). It'll probably be Doom though, especially since Brad is such a long time Doom fan.

What do y'all do while listening to the deliberations? Beyond my short commute to work, I'm thinking of playing some game I can give half of my focus to like some CRPG. Baldur's Gate, maybe?

EDIT: Damn it, Stoze

I usually just sit in front of a fireplace haha.
These podcasts are entertaining enough that it doesn't make sense to distract myself with something else.

If they go by the definition of actual disappointment, then probably (maybe).

Unlike SFV though I don't know who SMM3D is for, outside of parents who mindlessly gift this to their kids for christmas and Jeremy Parish. It's a majorly pointless piece of software, one that's ridiculously overpriced. It's like if SFV only had arcade mode at full price and never planned on adding anything else.

- Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator
- King of Fighters XVIIXVIXSB
- Nitroplus Blasterz

Oh okay, it's better than Nitroplus I guess...

People act as if SFV plays like an interactive pile of steaming garbage and all of a sudden anime fighters are better than the best playing Street Fighter of all time? Come on, breh. I get being disappointed at how Capcom messed up this game's release at every corner but that doesn't mean the fighting itself is disappointing.

It's like Destiny and how people forgave Vanilla all its shortcomings because of how great the shooting felt. Only that with a fighting game shooting/fighting is ALL THERE IS TO DO. You can't tell me it broke your heart you couldn't fight against the PC in an Arcade Mode or that you were desperately longing for a cinematic Story mode for all the deep SF lore.

"If this was a car the government would step in" is still one of my all time favorite Jeff lines.
He was completely right too. Fallout 4 and in general Bethesda's inability to increase the quality of the iterations of their games is an embarrassment. It was disappointing to hear Austin making they argument he was making, given he's one of the smartest dudes in the games press and it was a resoundingly silly argument.

I was mainly joking, SFV is definitely great. The lack of content is the disappointing bit of it for me. Seeing that tiny stage selection and the edge ones being "HEY, BUY ME IF YOU WANT THE CONTENT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN HERE IN IV" was a bummer.

I've also just always preferred anime fighters to SF, personally.

Brad was really into NMS, but I think he knew what he was going to get. More than the general audience atleast.

I'd like to see TLG up there, just because there's no AAA game trying half the things it does. It's really a unique triumph in video games.

But I doubt anyone at GB gives a toss about it.

I bet he'll be disappointed by the mobile Animal Crossing game and put it on the list for 2017.

Holy shit. For a moment I thought the title of this thread was spoiling the winner of this year's GOTY!

It's still gonna be Hitman, though.

Alex seems to like it, don't think anyone else played it. Didn't it come out during the weeks they were recording goty?

It definitely wins the "THIS SHIT IS $60?! AWARD 2016"

Why? Seriously, I don't get it. Because it didn't have an Arcade Mode or a Story Mode at launch?

Because Jeff and/or Jason seemed to voice disappointment with it across multiple podcasts, that's it. Those were definitely part of it though.

Personally I can't vouch for it since I haven't played it.

God, I can never avoid these even though I get upset by like 80% of the choices they make. They're just so goddamn entertaining. Crossing my fingers for a Guilty Gear miracle that Jason will be able to get God Eater in the top 10 lol.

You're more likely to see Nitroplus come up a few times than Guilty Gear.

Also didn't Jason come away from God Eater 2 thinking it was worse than the original? I doubt it'll be anywhere other than his personal list.

Quantum Break for disappointment of the year.

Homeworld:Deserts of Kharak for 'Best Sttttyyyyyllllllle' and number 10 on the GOTY list.

They pretend Nitroplus Blasterz is great and won't even mention Revelator. Prepare yourself.

Mario maker 3ds is a bigger disappointment for them, I think.

From game of the year on a handheld to totally meaningless.

If they give it to street fighter 5 that will be total nonsense. It's a good game. Only the internet hate mob ruined it.

MM3DS is a good pick for most dissapointing.

Not only is it a bummer of a game but the lack of the core feature that made the OG game great in the first place makers you wonder if maybe Mario Maker Wii U was a fluke and Nintendo is still Nintendo about the Internet and Online
