What games could be considered best story? Are there any? Honestly I don't care about the story of any game I played this year. Doom's was funny/entertaining in an ironic sort of way, but in the moments it tries to have a real story it's as crap as the average game.
There's nothing this year on the level of something like SOMA. UC4 is kind of winning by default here I guess.
Well,
was in the running and it is generally considered to be one of the best RPG quests ever made. It has great characters, gravitas, humor, and interesting thread of events, i.g., all things Uncharted 4 does not have.
As for DOOM and Uncharted 4, since they are video games, I can't help but think about their stories in the context of them being video games. So looking at them that way, here is why I think DOOM technically has a better story than Uncharted 4, or why I subjectively enjoyed DOOM's more.
DOOM's story essentially fits perfectly with the tone and pace of the game. It is there to support what's happening when the player is in control. In that context, it's a great story because it does exactly what it needs to do to make DOOM an enjoyable video game.
Now for Uncharted, it's clear ND's main drive behind how that game is structured is to allow them to tell their story. They do this by leaving very little need for thought and with maybe 20% of the gametime what I would consider any sort of active gameplay. If you are going to sacrifice player agency in order to tell a story, it better be a damn good one. And yet, a second playthrough has proved almost impossible for me. The story is shallow and poorly paced.
I even preferred Inside's surrealistic nightmare storybook "narrative" to be far more engaging than Uncharted's.
tldr; Uncharted 4's story is boring, long, serious and fairly sloppy. Plus it keeps Uncharted 4 from actually being an enjoyable video game, which is what it is supposed to be.
