Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Man, I gotta give credit to Dan during this GOTY discussion:

Him bringing up dropping UC4 might be the best argument of the podcast so far. It 100% makes more sense to have three games that individual members of the crew are passionate about than having one game that everyone feels good about.

As someone who hasn't played Doom or Firewatch, Brad has done a horrible job of convincing me that Doom's story is any good; he just lists moments that he thinks are cool.

Holy shit! I doubted myself on
GOTY
when I knew all along it would be
Hitman
! I should never doubt myself on guessing GB picks.

Was Dishonored 2 the most notable snub this year?

I mean in terms of games that weren't even mentioned at all, for anything.

It came up a couple times for style and graphics stuff. But it wasn't ever going to get much play because it's just not a series the GB folks really liked outside I guess of Jason who had like two weeks max before this was recorded. If Austin or Patrick were still there I could see them putting in some work maybe.

Correct me if I'm wrong but...
Doom and Titanfall 2
ended up with no rewards?

Doom won best surprise, but yeah Titanfall... I don't even think that got top 3 in anything. Odd. Not even best moment?

More than any other year, I've come out of Giant Bomb's GOTY with a list of games I had little interest in that I really want to play now.

Can't wait for that Hyper Light Drifter update.

Doom has an anti-story. It intentionally skips story development and mainly sticks to environmental and a codex to offer up narrative for those that want it, to keep the player in the action with limited interruptions. I haven't heard the argument for it to have the best story. I'm curious what he has to say to make it best story.

I just started the story part and oh man do they shove Doom in every category. Like seriously?! Doom for best story? it's my goty but the story certainly wasn't its strongest point.

It's real good. The isolated and loneliness feeling you get from such a colorful game is incredible. The game also doesn't fuck around if you aren't on your toes.

Pretty proud of myself that the only game on their end of year list that I haven't played is
Thumper.
There are a couple of them that I still have to finish, but I did a pretty good job keeping up with these games this year.

It's pretty close to my list, but I'd definitely add The Division. And put it pretty high.

Haven't listened to the Top 10 part but at least tell me
Brad's classic fillibuster had to have been done for Doom right?
If not, he has gone SAWFT.

He probably lobbied for Hitman for all I know.

I feel like they need a type of "best gameplay" award. So many for style, story and moment but never really touch on gameplay at all.

Best story was... ehhhh
I´d give it to
Banner Saga 2 or Tyranny
from what I´ve played.
Doom
is great but c´mon. Haven´t played
Firewatch
so can´t say anything about that one.
UC4
was just bad.

Re: Uncharted 4, didn't we already know that
Drake was not an actual descendant of Drake? I thought that was established in 3
.

e: It also has a preeetttyyy gooood [Uncharted 4]
Monkey Island
easter egg.

I had the "big" easter egg spoiled for me before playing the game, but this one was definitely a bigger deal for me, lol. So awesome.

Jeff still loving the Marcus Fenix character and talking up the Gears story, while saying everything about the Uncharted story and characters are terrible is too funny. But at least he didn't use Wikipedia to dismiss a story this year.

You are not going to play DOOM for the story. You are there for the fast paced, brutal gameplay. Not that the story is bad per se, the game does an efficient job telling a good FPS story but it is nowhere near as good as the gameplay which is god tier. No opinion on Firewatch as I have not played it yet.

GOTY Spoilers:

It's really bugging me that the DOOM argument is coming down to its multiplayer. That's just such a flawed argument.

You can't really attack the SP portion of the game, outside of it maybe being a tad bit too long. God tier SP and trash/adequate MP. Basically the reverse of your typical Battlefield game.

Some might say it was the thing that held it back the entirety of it's pre-release. It was why those review scores weren't any higher than it was and it's really sad because the multiplayer is actually great. But whatever I'm not gonna go on a victim complex about it cause it's still what it is and that is the undisputed king of games this god damn year :(

Yeah, what I played of the multiplayer of DOOM I actually enjoyed. It kinda reminded me of Halo in a way that I haven't felt since I was playing Halo 3 every day after school.

Granted, I don't think that's what people, especially Jeff, come to DOOM multi for, and that's fine, but for me, it hit pretty well.

I just think that like, in terms of gameplay, the DOOM campaign is perfect from start to finish. It's EXCELLENT. The multiplayer doesn't make that worse somehow.

Firewatch
in Giant Bomb's GotY 2017 was like a new season of Survivor.

Being considered to be eliminated from the beginning and ending up on the podium lol

Great #1 pick for GOTY from Giant Bomb. I think I'll get the physical copy of Hitman when it comes out in January as a result -- which is I think is the point of their list.

Although I'm surprised that Deus Ex MD, Dishonored II, Watch Dogs 2 or FFXV didn't find a place on the list, but the last three are more recent and it's a little much to expect the Giant Bomb crew to play through the games in a month and have opinions (unless they did talk about them in the deliberations).

I'm surprised that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End didn't show up at all. Compared to the previous Uncharteds, yes it's a disappointment. But compared to other games that year, it's pretty great.

Has anyone posted timestamps for day 5 yet? I want to hear the best story discussion, but I haven't played Firewatch yet.

Timestamps are available in the audio podcast notes (but only for each section).

I never thought I'd see the day when
a Hitman-ass Hitman game wins Giant Bombs GOTY.

I've lived with the series since the demo of the first game, so happy

All in all, a great top 10. I'm glad I kept up with the games they liked this year because I actually had opinions on a lot of this stuff.

I can't be mad about how the top 2 ended up because both games are phenomenal, but I stand with Brad when he said
you know, give me positive arguments for Hitman instead of shitting on DOOM's multiplayer. It's just odd to me that DOOM is literally the best shooter campaign of the past 15 years according to them and it's not the game of the year. That's wild. It's historically good, and Hitman is great, but certainly won't be remembered in the same way.
