Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Ugh. I wish I could have joined in on here when this started. I'm behind on these but I want to listen to Day 5 so bad so I can actually join the discussion.

Quick question, are there major spoilers discussed in Story for Event[0] or Turing Test?

Edit: I wish I had a recording of the "ACK" I let out when Drew immediately brought up the former, lol

I guess Souls fatigue is real?
A lot of Dark Souls 3's effectiveness is incumbent on the player having played DS1, and enjoyed it, when it came out, at least on PC if not consoles. For the few people at GB that satisfy the latter part, the closest to the former is Vinny and that's only barely.

If you only played Dark Souls recently (within the last two to three years), DS3's nostalgia grabs are clumsy and overwhelming. At that point, it just feels like a Souls game that doesn't speak to you.

Real quick, as I can't listen to these till later, but...

Reinhardt as Overwatch character.

Reinhardt is the character that most resembles my feelings on the game. When I first saw Overwatch, I wasn't interested in it in the least. Thought it was just another Hero Shooter. 100+ hours later or whatever, it's my game of the year.

Reinhardt is a character design I looked at and went, "Oh, of course they gotta make a big, beefy Tank guy." Oh, he's German how original. Look at his rocket hammer -- NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE GEE-WIZ. And he's a chivalrous knight, of course of course of course. Yawn.

But his gameplay is cool and highly original. So much so that other Hero Shooters are blatantly copying it. He's an old man, not a Swimsuit model or Aryan God or anything. He's BATSHIT INSANE, and likes the classics (like Hasselhoff!). He's so vital to the meta. He basically the Vanilla WoW Warrior Tank Archetype in FPS-form.

I got turned around on him, just like the game itself. Maybe he isn't my favorite, but what a role-reversal.

I mean the point is that you seek out those opportunities naturally by exploring and listening instead of following objective markers.

Yeah. Almost every game allows you to turn objective markers and gratuitous hud elements off but very, very few nowadays are well designed around them actually being turned off. Hitman 100% is, and it makes for a lively, complex yet understandable environment and rewarding, satisfying gameplay and discovery. With turning off opportunities I've never had trouble getting flashy assassinations, whether they be big scripted events or purely emergent.

That said if you think you'll enjoy the game more with them on then, by all means, turn them on/minimal. There's no wrong way to play, just keep an open mind about other play methods.

999 is a top 10 game for me and I really enjoyed VLR, but I just bounced right the hell off of ZTD for some reason. I need to give it another shot. (And I guess that's another game where I'll have to avoid spoilers in the podcast, lol)

Definitely, like vinny said it's too much too soon. Despite ds3 being in my top 3 this year I don't feel anywhere near as strongly about it as ds1 or bloodborne. I can accept and understand why it hasn't made GB's or many people's lists.

I'm only still early on in day 4 stuff but man, Vinny or whoever else didn't sell Virginia as well as they should have. That belonged in the top 3.

Kind of surprised that
Dishonored 2
did not make the GOTY discussion. I have not played it myself but the reviews have been pretty positive for it. Not even a mention.

Also can't believe that one had to be the 3DS game that made it the closest to one of these lists. Probably the bigger WTF here.
Popplio robbed for best new character.

This Overwatch discussion is super weird as I have no stake in any of them and sounds like just a bunch of jibberish strung together and yet I am fine to hear people suffer as characters are cut from the list.

Edit: Overwatch is a waifu/husbando sim with guns.

you god damn right it is

I don't know why but I'm kind of ambivalent on the top ten. Maybe because I've basically stopped watching Giantbomb videos for the most part so I didn't get to see them "learn" the game that won.

Last game I played from them was Borderlands which is in my top 10 of 2015. However, their engine was and probably still is the lowest point of their games which is a shame.

I really hope they upgrade or at least make a different engine for themselves.

Tales from the Borderlands? yes, awesome story.

As for the engine, they upgraded it for Batman and it's still a horrible mess. They def need to build a brand new one from scratch. Current engine is shit.

I love the Souls games but 3 barely makes it into my top 10 this year. It just felt so uninspired. In any case the fact that Bloodborne didn't even rank last year was a pretty clear indication that DS3 was not going to be part of this years discussion.

The Telltale ride is getting rockier.

I am kind of checked out on their games until they announce a complete overhaul. Too many crashes for me to keep trying.

UC4 spoilers

who didn't that brother twist coming from a mile away? as soon as he came back i knew his backstory was BS

I think
people were suspicious, I certainly was. I expected him to betray Nate. What actually happened is much worse and hurts the narrative for me. I do not understand how Sam could stand by and watch Nate wreck his life for no good reason. That confrontation with Elena should have made him understand what his lie was doing but nope. And Nate forgives him? Bizarre.

At the UC4 discussion now and yes, it probably has the second or third best story of this year and it's because of two things.

1) The focus on the quieter moments and how the game gives time for such moments to shine between the explosions and killing.
2) The way the game starts and the case made for the treasure this time around felt way more meaningful. Plus it's about
pirates and the themes surrounding them which worked in tandem with the story itself.

Now, that's not to say that the story doesn't have flaws. It does, but the way ND presents the story itself and the interactions between the characters is fantastic. Alot of it has to do with the subtlety of the animations.

Like this is one of the most memorable moments in UC4 for me.

e: It also has a preeetttyyy gooood
Monkey Island
easter egg.

Was Dishonored 2 the most notable snub this year?

I mean in terms of games that weren't even mentioned at all, for anything.
