Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Hearts of a Stone, released in 2015, is still probably the best story of 2016. SOMA last year sure set the bar high for Best Story, I loved this years games but there wasn't much in the way of good stories.

Man, I gotta give credit to Dan during this GOTY discussion:

Him bringing up dropping UC4 might be the best argument of the podcast so far. It 100% makes more sense to have three games that individual members of the crew are passionate about than having one game that everyone feels good about.

I am 100% with you. That was one of the more satisfying moments of the last few years of GOTY discussion for me.

whoa, they really did it

and jeffs list is like the only one with FH3 on it, so it's good

i'm kinda shocked at their overall number one, but i can't say it's underserving. i think it's a great list all round.

Jeff Goddamn Gerstmann during that final act was masterful.

I haven't played Hitman (which I need to fix) and I love Doom's campaign. Neither would be my GOTY but I gotta say, something about how he just stole that top spot was brilliant. I was pretty saddened that he didn't get the case for either of Titanfall 2's bits during Best Moment - especially since I adored that game - and seeing him sneakily pull the rug under everyone with Hitman felt so perfect.

Really good stuff this year. Loved Hitmas too!

GOTY Overwatch got in higher than I thought, so that's great. What a great year for games. I'm having a hard time making my own list. I've still gotta play Hitman and Hyper Light Drifter! I'm happy with this year's list!

Surprised at the game of the year discussion, although in hindsight I guess I shouldn't have been.
I'm glad they started arguing for HItman as number one rather than argue why Doom isn't number 1

This year felt a lot more peaceful as GOTY arguments go. I didn't feel like anyone really got destroyed like in past years in the big arguments.

Can't wait to see Alex's list.

Also kind of surprised they didn't get that YouTuber Petrov Kleptock to post a guest list. I'd be in on that.

Why does Jeff insist that Doom's multiplayer detracts from the game as a whole, when just last year he said that Mario Maker's dogshit curation features didn't matter to the game itself?

Said screw it and listened to the Best Overwatch Character part of Day 5 even though I' behind. Couldn't help myself.

Jeff going to bat for Mei made me oh so happy but Dan has the worst fucking opinion there. He's the guy who plays only Offense heroes and he doesn't like Zarya? Dude, you talk up Soldier and Reapers Ults yet you don't like the character who sets both of the up perfectly? UUUUUGGGGHH.

That was terrible. I'm glad Jason showed his love for Zarya in the discussion. I'm sad that my girl D.VA didn't make it. :(

Probably because DOOM played a huge role in making MP FPS a thing back in the day. As great as the SP is and it is god tier, the MP is absolute dogshit.

Just wanted to pop in and say that the Day Three discussion about using cover songs in game trailers was pretty rough to listen to. I love the show and think these guys are great but man were they too cool for school during that part. I was just shy of shouting at my phone "GET OVER IT, PEOPLE LIKE SONGS YOU DONT".

Just getting rolling on Day Four right now.

Will catch up on the last half of the deliberations tomorrrow. For now, this Rocket League video is all I care for. Just got to the point where they realise "hey, y'know what? rocket league's pretty good. forgot how good this is."

That's teammate.

It's what happens with games-as-a-service.

People invest hundreds of hours into a game because they love it, sure, but also because they want their time to be validated.

also overwatch fucking sucks

I know opinions can't technically be "Wrong", but yours is close. :p

Agreed, I feel like that was a good call, and something they wouldn't normally think to do.

The Overwatch character thing was so fucking dumb, but also fun.
I'd have gone Junkrat, but Rein is a solid choice.

It doesn't look like DOOM being nominated for story ruffled quite as many feathers in this thread as I'd expected. Huh.

Overall, excellent awards!

I find it amazing that no one truly challenged Dan on Stardew Valley.

As a lifelong Harvest Moon fan who loves everything about that genre... SV is the ultimate "me-too" game in the genre. Literally everything people are praising about the game has already been done before, and better. It just blows my my mind.

Honestly this years GOTY discussion was so sedate compared to past years that when Jeff said
"Lets swap Doom and Hitman and just walk away"
i 100% expected it to happen.

Vinny explaining a game with a batshit crazy story

Brad - "I'm not sure I can render a judgement on that"

Everyone else - "sounds fucking awesome!!!"

That was terrible. I'm glad Jason showed his love for Zarya in the discussion. I'm sad that my girl D.VA didn't make it. :(
Zarya and D.Va needed more love. Also, Dan's inability to understand Zenyatta baffled me. He clearly doesn't play healer and argues his choices because they're fun to play and not because their personalities but doesn't think [insert here] is fun to play when he probably didn't give them much of a chance to begin with. He's totally that guy on your team.

A couple of takeaways from the last podcast:

I was with Jason 100% -
it's a Hitman game with some polish, and even that is arguable. Don't agree with it being #1 but it's a subjective list so who cares.

I guess I kind of get the idea that
Doom's MP makes Doom's "package" worse overall, but the campaign is so robust and fulfilling that if it shipped without a MP nobody would have cared. (and that is proven when Alex mentions this and nobody argues with him)

The lack of
Titanfall 2 discussion was disappointing, especially when they were talking about how Doom is the best SP campaign of the last 15 years or whatever. Alex labeling as gimmicky as Superhot makes no sense, and since which game is the best "package" seemed to dictate the top of this list, TF is arguably the best of them all.

Finally,
Uncharted not making the list but winning Best Story is weird.

Overall a good discussion that I thought was unfortunately boiled down to
which game is the better value for $60, which is hardly relevant at this stage.

This.

The existence of a mode that is bad should never detract from the game's chances at awards if that mode is easily ignored. Just note in any review that "so-and-so mode sucks".

Let's say Witcher 3 was the same as it was, but also had a tacked on multiplayer mode that was complete shit. Should it then suddenly not win all those GOTY awards it did? That would be fucking stupid. That game was 9 or higher to me, and it would stay a 9 or higher even if a shitty mode was shoehorned in because it does not effect my experience of the main single player game in any way.

Obviously it is a case-by-case basis, I thought COD Infinite Warfare had an 8/10 campaign, good solid fun, but the multiplayer was trash. That does earn a lower review overall because multiplayer is essential to COD. Multiplayer hasn't been essential to DOOM in decades.

DOOM's multiplayer in no way detracts from its superb campaign, Jeff is just wrong on that.

Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go buy
Hitman

HOT TAKES:

- I love that Jeff burned Dan for maining Soldier 76 when everyone assumed before Overwatch came out that Jeff would only ever play 76.
- Cancelling my subscription for lack of D.VA, Mercy, Tracer, Mei
- Vinny argued for Hitman even though he put DOOM higher on his personal list, giving yet more evidence that we live in a post-truth Giant Bomb world
- Dan getting Uncharted 4 off the list was a genius move. Amazing how everyone voted for it and then as soon as he brought it up everyone was like "Yeah, actually dump it"
- DOOM is the best game of the year

My personal prediction was not too bad, all things considered:

1. DOOM
2. Hitman
3. Overwatch
4. Titanfall 2
5. The Witness
6. Stardew Valley
7. Superhot
8. Inside
9. Uncharted 4
10. Gears of War 4

I feel like next year they should just assign order to the top 5 and leave the other 5 games as Honorable Mentions or something. 6-10 are basically just fights to get the game on the list at all and once that happens the order is super arbitrary, especially when a lot of those games only have one person fighting for it.

Doom
as Biggest Surprise doesn't make any sense anymore after the overall GOTY.

What do you mean? It makes perfect sense.
Hitman as a series
never went to the terrible depths of
Doom 3 and the E3 showing of Doom, as well as Carmack leaving
and is therefore more of a surprise.

I've yet to main Zenyatta but a good one on the team is great for shredding heavies, in addition to healing.

Absolution was worse than Doom 3 and the episodic structure was a big red flag for the new Hitman; it should've won Biggest Surprise imo.

How Pharah managed to even be discussed much less a runner-up is baffling to me.

Plays worse than a TF2 soldier and has the personality of a sponge.

I would've appreciated Hitman a lot more if I followed it through the year and I guess since it's impact THROUGHOUT the year that made it a cut above the rest but man c'mon having the multiplayer bog down the achievement that is DOOM is just sad really.

I blame BT for this.

Giant Bomb is my favorite video game website, but I can't count how many times i've disagreed with their GOTYs and how their number 2's are ALWAYS my number 1. It's incredible but it's ok, I love you all.

It's just weird how Jeff effectively decided both 2015 and 2016's GOTY by taking opposite viewpoints on whether shitty features detract from a game's overall quality (2015, the answer was no; 2016, the answer is yes.)

Yep, this was great and led to a much better list. None of the guys really gave a fuck about
UC4
in the way they did many of the other games on the list, I was pretty surprised it even got the nod for
Best Story
.
