Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Hyper Light Drifter, Event0, Stellaris, House of the Dying Sun, Thumper, and Darkest Dungeon are the games I came out of their GOTY thinking I need to play. All in all, I'm shocked with how many of the "top" games this year I managed to play.

Holy shit, Dan's singing.

I had to stop the video.

It's like he's telling us the story of how the boys are back in town.

Brad can't keep his composure.

It's not even the best FPS campaign this year! Once I got to Hell my motivation to play that game dropped off a cliff, couldn't force myself to get through the rest of it. Titanfall 2 was much more compelling and fun imo.

Titanfall 2 is certainly an excellent campaign and much better then the standard military FPS faire you would get, and it does prioritize movement.

But theres practically zero enemy variety and on harder difficulties you still feel the need to hide and regen hp (especially with the overpowered stealth camo.) In DOOM, the harder the difficulty is the more incentivized you are to go balls deep because of how relentless the enemies are and how you get health/ammo back. There is no hiding because you are the unstoppable force. That's what I like about DOOM. Its textbook my kind of FPS design.

All of those are great.

I'm so mad right now.

About the Overwatch characters category.

Zarya got screwed and Symmetra wasn't even in the discussion. I mean, Reinhardt?! Beyond the pale.

Why would anyone talk about Symmetra? This was before she got buffed to be useful and not a pick that causes immediate disgust worse then Hanzo

Reinhardt is probably the most important Overwatch character across all metas. Like they said, you build a team around Reinhardt. He is your anchor.

How on earth is this our reality, I will never understand. Not that
Hitman won, but that that was the fight. If anything I'd have expected them to take opposing sides there.

Brad is a huge
Doom/id/John Carmack fanboy (Pretty sure he even admits to it during the deliberations this week).

Vinny- "Doom is a complete package"
Jeff- "No it isn't!"

Jeff really takes issue with the fact that Doom's multiplayer is terrible.

Handwaving away bad parts of games because other parts are good is how we ended up with Skyrim as GOTY.

GOTY:
They made the right choice, I haven't even played it and I recognize that Hitman is an incredible game. The Doom campaign is great, but there's at least one portion (first person platforming to climb that fucking shaft thing) that make me never want to replay it.

Best Story:
Doom shoved into yet another category it doesnt belong in. "Remember those holigrams that told you to worship hell, weren't they funny? Remember all those text logs you had to read to get the story, weren't they great?"

No, they weren't. The story in Doom was generic as hell, but played to the nostalgia of people who love Doom.

Jeff was right to call out Doom on the 2/3rds of it that are trash.

Excellent campaign, as previously stated by basically any one who has played it, but Hitman is a more complete package, with tons more content and replay value

I don't see how that's even up for debate.
Snap map isn't trash. And the multiplayer isn't trash, either. It's just mostly uninteresting.

They're fine at worst with a phenomenal single player that is more than worth the price of admission.

Jeff is just full of shit about Doom because if you take out the multiplayer and snapmap it's still objectively worth $60 for the campaign.

Titanfall 2 makes up for a lack of enemy variety with actual level variety. While DOOM runs the gammot from 'space hell' to 'industrial hell', Titanfall sends you through active factory floors. A high-flying platforming routine atop a satellite array. Duels atop military ships in active chase. Not to mention the wild assortment of gameplay mechanics that keep popping up. It opens with a speed trial, introduces platforming challenges, horde based enemy encounters, and the masterpiece that is Effect and Cause.

Doom is a great series of enemy encounters. Titanfall is a great campaign.

Finished today's episode, overall a pretty solid list based on the deliberations. The top choice seems about right based on what I've seen from the site this year.

DOOM being in the running for best story was... what? The story in that game was literally the last thing on my mind while playing the game. Yeah there were some interesting/funny beats along the "Doom guy doesn't care" lines but yeah, that was a weird fit in that category IMO.

I was also worried that Jeff's irrational hatred of Inside was going to get it pushed off the list, but I'm glad the rest of the group kept it on. It is undoubtedly one of the best games of the year and surely deserved to be on that list.

Based on this year's list, the games I want to try are Hyper Light Drifter, Thumper, and Stardew Valley. Was also glad that
Superhot
made its way onto the list as that is some of the most fun I've had with a game this year.

I should also probably get Overwatch, even though I have no idea when I'd have the time to play it. (and no friends interested enough in it to play it with)

That is two different FPS designs. Titanfall 2 has influences of Call of Duty designs and Doom with the 90s design of FPSs. Both can be good and bad.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
Huh.

Should have realized that
Doom....
not having good
multiplayer
would revert Jeff's alliances so quickly.

Makes sense, in retrospect.

Thats a really good point. Doom's level design isn't about setpieces, its about the labyrinthine mazes of old FPS filled with secrets and upgrades and in some cases, the ability to sequence break by getting a weapon early. They just prioritize different things and I lean more Doom's way.

Fwiw, Titanfall 2 is also more fun then I've had with any military fps ever. I'd probably put it above Wolfenstein TNO/TOB and around Half-Life 1.

See thats where I disagree because I don't think I've ever found a CoD campaign interesting. Titanfall 2 handily beats even the best Call of Dutys in SP and MP, and I've enjoyed Call of Duty MP before.

I don't think this should necessarily impact GOTY discussions (being, as they are, reflections of how much fun folk had with a title) but for practical purposes it's worth mentioning that I bought Doom and it's currently sitting at literally a 76.7GB size. As a singular consumer who recently suffered a catastrophic HDD failure and is trying to play games on just a 250GB SDD, that's fucking outrageous.

Just started listening to today's and I actually guffawed at Drew's incredulous shout of "She's a SPACE EGYPTIAN!" in defense of Pharah.

I mean, there's a fraught discussion to be had there concerning an aesthetic and/versus an actual personality, right?

Pharah might be the most boring Overwatch character. Yes, including Bastion.

Her design, kit and skins are great but she has like zero personality. Even walking templates like Soldier 76 and Reaper have more fun to them.

Pharah's laugh emote is that she laughs for a second, catches herself laughing, and then stops.

We have to agree to disagree then on what a good FPS campaign is. Becuase the single player campaign in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare were pretty good in the history of FPS.

Because it's no where near as good of a game as some of the others on that list. The whole enjoyment of the game comes from watching other people fuck up and attempt to work their way out of situations. Not because the actual stealth mechanics are any good. That's not to say it's a bad game, it's just not a game I would look back as something that stood out in any way shape or form. Other games on that list have had much more impact or executed on their ideas much better than the number one choice.

Sir you are incorrect

I realize, and I know some things are problematic. I just enjoyed how Drew sounded, that's all.

(And I like her if only because her Anubis skin reminds me of Anubis from ZOE)

Hitman won! I couldn't believe it. Especially after Vinny putting it as his top game but supporting Hitman as number one. Hitman is the best game for sure.

On the other hand the idea that Doom has a better story than Firewatch is baffling. I get that some people don't like the ending but Firewatch tells such a touching tale about two (three) broken people and how they deal with their shit while subverting the thriller genre that Doom, even if fun in an absurd way, can't even compare.

Doom has fun writing but so does Hitman. Firewatch is touching and makes you think about life. The idea that Drew forgot about characters (that are talked about way more than Brad implied) just says more about him than the game.

Firewatch is a fantastic game with such a human and down to heart story that ugh, it made me listen to them saying how Doom had a better story so weird. I mean, taste and all but I just couldn't connect.

But, going back to the positive side, Hitman fucking won. Yes! GOTY without a doubt.

Also, Vinny might not like constraints but they do help with you being creative. Escalations give you constraints without feeling like a check list, I feel he would enjoy that.

Hitman is amazing and everybody should play it. The better game won and when Jeff said they should swap Doom with Hitman I was like "hell yeah!".

Pharah as a character for a huge boost from the community through the Pharamercy ship. It paints that character in a way more human light than ever surfaces in the game. That makes me play with her landing in the top three.

That said, they clearly picked her based on gameplay. Considering a ton of the dudes have a love of Quake, it all fit.

100% agreed. I was personally pulling for Zarya, she's actually a pretty bold design both artistically and mechanically.

Far Cry 3 is Jeff's #1 game of 2012 and that game had BAD multiplayer. I don't recall him ever complaining about it. I honestly don't get his argument with Doom.

Hitman Collector's Edition is only $80 on Amazon, is the statue good quality anyone know?

It looks cool, but they often look cool but are trash quality.

Also, is the extra content in the upcoming steelbook worth getting? I think collector's edition just comes with a basic download of the five episodes or something.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
Jeff nit picked Doom because he didn't want it to win.

There's no reason to look for further explanation

I'd say it's probably at least partly due to his personal list saying he was bummed at Doom's actual multiplayer compared to his nostalgia of the original games.

The debate is whether high points count for something or do we just look at games and take the average. I think taking the average is a really boring and mechanical way to look at a game.

It's not about "the average", it's more like evaluating a complete experience which honestly should be a more common approach to video game critique. Judging something just by its high points and low points isn't really a great approach since a review should explore and speak of the game's entire content.

Yeah I think a lot if people like her more because of Pharmercy.

Like I get it she's a security guard who's super job focused but you made 76 more fun.
