Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Vinny- "Doom is a complete package"
Jeff- "No it isn't!"

Jeff really takes issue with the fact that Doom's multiplayer is terrible.

Which makes it funnier that
Overwatch snagged 3 over Titanfall despite Overwatch being multiplayer only and Titanfall being a "more complete package"

I think if Doom had shipped without multiplayer at all, Jeff would have liked it more. It's kind of like the backlash there was to Tomb Raider 2013 for even having the gall to include multiplayer, even though the single player was so good.

Overwatch was smart to not have a crappy single player mode

Overwatch is a full package because it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a multiplayer game. To try to fault the game on what it isn't rather than what it is, is simply unfair and nonsensical. Nobody is out there complaining that Skyrim didn't have multiplayer, or that Dota doesn't have singleplayer.
If I'm hungry, I'm not going to complain that my soda isn't a turkey sandwich.

Placing aside, that seriously has to be one of the best top 10's in years. All are really brilliant games.

GOTY SPOILERS

Hitman really deserved it though. No other game is doing what its doing this year and the success they've made of the episodic format really has to be applauded. It just perfects that feeling of getting away with something so well, even other stealth games struggle to get it.

Yeah that came to mind after I posted. Im tired, work is hard :(

I'm so pleased with this result.

DOOM is solid, but to me it never rose above the level of something like SuperHot - an excellent mechanic stretched out into a game, coated with artistic Polish.

Hitman is revelatory. The release structure was outstanding, the stealth so tight, the levels so sprawling and dense. Every mission feels infinitely repayable, in a way that has actively raised the bar for this genre. Playing Dishonored 2's single scripted path of every target felt constraining in comparison.

All that said, Jeff & Dan very nearly blew it. The insistence on focusing on multiplayer was a weak argument (games with shite side modes have won GB GOTY multiple times), and they were too confident to let Hitman speak for itself. Drew was the game's true savior, bringing up the open ended structure and leading to discussion of the game's personality. That swayed Vinny, and with it the room. Overall, a master play that easily makes him GB GOTY VIP 2016 (a redemption, after having failed to stand up for Wolfenstein & A Link Between Worlds in 2014 and 2013).

Brad was a really good moderator for this year's GOTY. Almost felt like he didn't have a super strong opinion for most of the picks.
I feel like Brad could become President without us noticing. He should really enter politics.

I havent listened to it but Im glad
Drew is the real mvp here. My prediction of Jeff turning against Brad also came true.

Jeff was right to call out Doom on the 2/3rds of it that are trash.

Excellent campaign, as previously stated by basically any one who has played it, but Hitman is a more complete package, with tons more content and replay value

I don't see how that's even up for debate.

Oh GTA IV won GOTY? Guess Shadow of Morder isn't the worst game to win GB GOTY

how the shit can jeff like GTA IV but not RDR
Jeff has very, very, very bad opinions on 90% of video games.

I swear I listened to an episode where he said Wind Waker had better dungeons than Twilight Princess (which he irrationally hates on every single ground).

Whoa, the new process for choosing GOTY was pretty smart
I wanted to echo this. I was worried because I love starting with the giant list and cutting one at a time, but this was a great compromise to just start with games they felt passionate about from the get-go. It really got them into the meat of the discussion quickly rather than spending a half hour saying things like "Rocksmith is cool, but it's not going to hang..."

Just running through a mental exercise since they usually disagree when it comes to #1...

Jeff vs. Brad Scorecard

2008 - Jeff (GTA4) over Brad (MGS4)
2009 - Brad (Uncharted 2) over Jeff (Batman: Arkham Asylum)
2010 - Jeff (Mass Effect 2) over Brad (Red Dead Redemption)
2011 - Brad (Skyrim) over Jeff (Saint's Row the Third)
2012 - No contest (Consensus: X-COM)
2013 - Brad (The Last of Us) over Jeff (anything but The Last of Us/THE GUNPOINT ROPE-A-DOPE)
2014 - No contest (Consensus: Shadow of Mordor)
2015 - Jeff (Super Mario Maker) over Brad (MGS5)
2016 -
Jeff (Hitman) over Brad (Doom)

I apologize if someone read this before I edited 2016 to be in spoiler tags.
2008: Jeff was right.
2009: Brad was right.
2010: Brad was right. But just marginally.
2011: Jeff was right.
2012: Everyone was right.
2013: Jeff was wrong, everyone else was right.
2014: Everyone was wrong, ugh.
2015: Jeff was right.
2016:
Jeff is right.
Fight me you fucks.

The debate is whether high points count for something or do we just look at games and take the average. I think taking the average is a really boring and mechanical way to look at a game.

I always like how even when there are more people siding with the game opposite Brad, he acts like it can't win unless he's convinced, like his vote is worth more than everyone else. One of the only things that annoys me about him. The other being that he even used the excuse to consider games as a "complete package" in another category iirc, but then disregarded it here in order to try and let Doom win.

Nah, it was Dan who suggested it!

I just listened through that part. Vinny brought it up because UC4 is a safe choice rather than something to be passionate about. Dan wanted to get Inside out, but didn't have an argument for it and he actually loves it.

It's a good call and made for a list that more represents the staff.

Bopping in here real quick to post the true final math-based (a.k.a. completely worthless) GOTY top 10 list:
1. Doom
2. Hitman
3. Overwatch
4. Superhot
5. Inside
6. Picross 3D: Round 2
7. Titanfall 2
8. The Witness
9. Overcooked!
10. Rez Infinite

Still listening to Day 5 so I don't know how close or far away this is from the actual list. But it's final now that Alex has posted his top games.

Alex "I'm Doom over Hitman"

*looks at top ten list*

...

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Yeah I have no idea why he said that.

I know they wrote these after the podcasts but changing your mind that much in a few weeks is odd. It seems like if Doom came out later in the year it would have won GOTY and higher placement on the lists.

Actual best shooter campaign: Splatoon

There's a giant Octopus DJ. What does DOOM have? Demons. More like Lameons.
