They tended to film multiple episodes in a single day, so they'd shoot for like 3 hours.

Also, a lot of games don't have natural breaks at the half-hour mark. I mean, imagine how long those grinding sessions would have lasted if there was a week of solid grinding as opposed to a couple of days.

If only every game would allow you to do that so easily. Chrono Trigger's brilliant pacing was on full display during that ER.

Eh, true I guess. Pacing's a bitch. They shot themselves in the foot by having amazing daily content like that so early in the site's life, but I think it was worth it given how good the P4 ER was.

The reason they don't want to do an ER nowadays, beyond the lack of an obvious game to do it for (although, come on, Xenoblade guys), is because they don't want to spend an hour a day filming it. But- here's the thing- if they just kept it to half an hour max per episode, like they originally were doing, there would be no trouble! :P

Can you imagine how bad Vinny's OCD would be if he was playing Xenoblade?

ERs are such a lazy and cheap way to get content on the site. And the community loves them for doing it. Why can't they love it, too. :(

I can see why they're uneasy. When they're dong something like that, there's a thin line separating them and some dude with a YouTube channel and a microphone.

We need to get the interns back and putting out more Fear Gauntlet videos. Kessler teased us all by starting a Condemned 2 run and leaving after the first video.

Anyone care about video reviews? I assume with the new video production team they'll be able to do more than just for the "big" games, but I'm not sure they want to.

I don't, not as long as the game has a quick look to go along with it. Seems like a whole mess of work for little payoff. A Quick Look + the review text is about 90% of the same content of a video review anyway.

Is it really that different now? Sure GB seems more "official-like" but GB is personality based content, LPs on Youtube are personality based content...not much difference, if it's what your fans want you give em it.

I don't care about them either, but I recall someone saying in the past that the video reviews get a ton of traffic. Maybe because they're short and concise while quick looks might be too long, or something like that.

I can't back this up, but I seem to remember Jeff saying sometime between the DP Endurance Run and the Chrono Trigger one that he very recently found out that Let's Plays on Youtube were even a thing. So I don't think Let's Plays existing is a reason for not wanting to do ERs.

EDIT: Found the quote, he heard about them "relatively recently" and that was 6 months ago.

I wonder if Vinny will be available for more on-screen time.

Seriously, I almost wish Vinny wasn't a video producer so we could see him on camera more. That was what always bummed me out about the live shows.

There are guys out there who do LPs more regularly and- because they're super-specifically-nerdy, like me- more knowledgeable/good at the game they're playing, so my 'dudes playing through games on camera and being entertaining' fix is easy to get. (See: ShockingAlberto and Sega1991's amazing Sonic 2006 race last night.)

But when Jeff gets going on some super weird scene in a game, it's amazing. That's what I go to Giant Bomb for, moments like that, so my desire for more ERs comes from wanting to see moments like that.

Endurance Runs are shit.

Just thought I'd voice up the minority opinion. I have no desire for them to ever do another.

Persona 4 was literally the most entertaining show I was watching at the time. I loved it and have watched the "Best of" on youtube about 3 or 4 times. Deadly Premonitions was also great. Didn't bother with Chrono Trigger though, in my opinion it was a poor choice and with a weak team. Ryan and Patrick are probably my least favorite combo. They can't bounce off each other as well as ones like Jeff and Vinny.

True, but Ryan and Patrick have this great desparate disfunction going. It's like the Portal 2 co-op; they are both compitant people but put them together and it all falls apart. I thought it was entertaining. They overthink everything and it doesn't help them at all.

Giantbomb Flight Club Quick Looks
Quick Looks
Random PC Game
Endurance Runs
TNTs
Random GB videos (mailbags, specials)

In that order, basically. This is the content I keep coming to the site for.

I never watch any of the official videos/trailers etc they mirror/link to on the site, don't read the reviews or watch video reviews. I do read Patrick's longer articles (like the FGC one or the one about Joust).

This...I mean, I still go back to the some of the ER episodes that have moments like this as if I was watching a favorite episode of a TV show. There are moments in the ERs that are just so funny, and entertaining. I'd place more importance on that kind of content, because it makes most of their audience happy, and entertained.

Reviews do nothing for me, and I still don't understand why GB thinks we even need them. I will make my own judgement on games, and I don't need anyone, even the GB guys to place a stamp on it. Cover it in a quick look if you must, because that helps me see it, but a review is really pointless to me.

I think quick looks are much more useful, because you can see the game in action, get some commentary on it, and it lets the viewer come up with their own interpretation much easier than throwing up a review with a score. People will get caught up on the actual score of a review more than the actual content of the review more often than not. At least with quick looks you are looking at the game, and hearing what they have to say. You don't see "4/5" or "3/5".

Xenoblade's not really funny. Not like Persona or Deadly Premonition

I think the Chrono Trigger ER really showed that the most important thing in selecting a game for an ER is the Story and Humor. P4 and DP have both of those in spades. I bailed on the CT run pretty early on because it was just kind of plain. I'm sure that game is great when you are the one playing it, but it makes for some bad watching.

It has the potential to be good, if it was a certain game, but the three they've picked have been awful choices I think. Clearly not for the audience as a whole, but for me personally.

Really, I'd rather not have the risk of them picking another game that I don't like. Put out 70 hours of unique content instead!

Weird story driven games like Persona 4 and DP are the only games that will ever work, if you don't like those two I don't see how you could like any endurance run.

Say what you will about the games themselves, but Persona 4 and Deadly Premonition were great material for Jeff and Vinny to riff on. It boggles my mind that you disagree.

I want a game with interesting gameplay, which those two don't have.

Plus they have shit stories so they fail in that aspect too. I can only ironically watch something bad for so long.

I can see someone thinking that about Persona, but Deadly Premonition having a shit story is something I will not accept. I'm completely serious.

I've been playing "The Next Big Thing" lately and it has so many "KING'S GAME!!!" moments it's crazy. I don't know if a point & click adventure game would work as an ER but man, there's a lot of good stuff in there.

I think I've said it before, but my biggest piece of dream content would be a series of Breaking Brads where Brad tries to get all the Meat Boy achievements.

A story should entertain. Being boring is basically the same as being shit. :P

Persona 4 is hardly boring anyway. If you want to say it's too reliant on tropes and such, sure, I don't mind that. But sometimes that shit works, and I think Persona 4 is a good example of that.

When I say inoffensive, I mean exactly that. You may not like it, but I feel the care that went into it is extremely evident. It's not like, say... FFXIII, where everything felt super forced and uninspired. P4 got heart, yo, and that makes the story and characters shine, even if it does eventually come down to
demon god wanted to destroy the world and teenage kids with bizarre powers are somehow the only ones who can stop them
.
