Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Do you really think Jamie and Adam have the time to do a video review of the latest gadget or gizmo? I have a feeling that the amount of video content that have Will+Norm will be exponentially higher than Jamie+Adam.

I don't know about Jamie but Adam has been talking about doing something like this for awhile.

And that's what made it great. Too bad in the real world you can't make money at it.

No, they can make it bigger. That's fine. Teaming up with Mythbusters? Awesome. Giving it a broken, awful looking redesign then calling it "Jamie and Adam's Tested" is bullshit.

Tested forums are hilarious at the moment. Dozens of threads saying "This all sucks"

A new guy finding this site now and seeing "RIP Tested" as the first thing in the forums is a lovely thought.

Wanted to make sure, so I tweeted Dave about the whereabouts of Mike Horn. Like we thought, he went with the rest of the engineers :(.

I love how part of Will's initial post on this mentioned how awesome the tested community was.

Edit: Also, I love how Will's last name is never mentioned in any of the videos introducing him.

What else did you expect? Tested.com was a very, very niche site with a small audience.
I think +- 1 mil visitors a month is not such a small audience :O.

I do not really like the website yet.
Text is a little harder to read and the layout does not really make a lot of sense yet.
but will figure it out.

I just glanced at the forums and it is absolutely atrocious design wise. I can't make heads or tales of the posts.

So let me just get everything straight in my head

Shelby + tested/screened/animevice + the whiskey web platform/tools go to BermanBraun.

Basically BermanBraun bought WhiskeyMedia?

Comic vine and GB get to go to CBSi since those where the only sites with large audiences and could be sold off separate.

Who is BermanBraun anyway?

They seem to be a TV production company that is getting into more web stuff?

The tested forums sounds like it's filled with a bunch of babies right now.

Well the whole thing is handled pretty terrible, just slapping Jamie and Adams names and faces everywhere and having them say stuff like "Welcome to our new site" and "We finally got our own site" was obviously not going to go down well with the already existing fan base. Also doesn't help that the whole site now looks terrible and they apparently can't even swear anymore which will no doubt also close down a lot of the other absurdities on the podcast and stuff like that.

I liked tested quite a lot but... Yeah don't think I can be too bothered with them if that is the direction they are heading, good luck to Norm and Will, but if that was giantbomb that had a change like this I would also be acting like a little baby on their forums and what not.

I guess one good thing that will come out of this is that we might have a Giant Bomb specific liveshow each week. Whiskey Media Happy Hour was pretty boring.

Exactly why there should have been a bit more foresight as to how the site's community might react to such a big focus change, even if it's good change. I'm not touching those discussions, but ideally I would think they'd want to foster a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers, not a bunch of 'wtf is this' in the comments from people shellshocked at just how forcefully Will + Norm's body of work was co-opted.

Don't know about you, but that Whiskey Media roller coaster shirt with all the guys on it is lookin' pretty good to grab right now off the WM store. And I bet it's going to sell fast.

Edit: Yeah I'm an idiot, it's the small sizes they have and everything else is sold.

Giantbomb was the biggest site in Whiskey Media, significantly so. Tested is in a completely different situation.

The people in the forums are embarrassing Will and Norm as well as themselves.

I don't think I understand the less than enthusiastic reception of Kleptok. He is a pretty cool guy.

I have a love/hate relationship with Patrick. Sometimes he's so hipster it makes my insides hurt. I don't really care for his "investigative video-game journalism" seriousness, or his indie game love affair, but most the time he's not so bad.

The pile-on on the guy who suggested that we was worried about Ryan's weight a few pages back was totally uncalled for. The guy is clearly morbidly obese. He's an awesome personality, great for the site and many people really like listening to him. Expressing concerns over his well-being isn't out of line. It isn't like housewives talking about a reality tv star going up a dress size, or something.

It's a larger problem with American, and by extension Western, culture that people are so quick to jump on the defensive when someone mentions weight.

It's Ryan's body, if he's happy then so be it. He has every right to be as far as he wants. That said, expressing well-intentioned concerns isn't out of line.

They don't care. In two days this will all have blown over. They know that.

Probably because of how they were reassuring fans only yesterday on the podcast about how not much is going to change. Then they got smacked in the face with this. It's early and I'll give them time, but they royally fucked up in the transition and the messaging for existing fans.

Works for me, thanks for the tip. I had no idea they were only $10 now.

Yep, medium's out. And depending on their size chart, I probably won't fit into a small. :(

I got mine when I first signed up (FIRST 5000 REPRESENT) and finally used my $15 coupon code yesterday to get my bomb shirt.
Yep, I got my Whiskey Media roller coaster shirt when they announced the premium membership on the first Big Live Live Show.

It's fading a little which makes me sad :(

Perhaps, but I think they would care about folks that supported them for 2 years, many with cash money. Immature internet ranting is bad form and I don't like it, but I also don't think they were as honest as they could have been as to how the new Tested was going to be presented and run. Could have been a smoother transition.

Why would they care about premium members who have already paid them, and presumably CAN'T pay them any more in the future, since there is going to be no more premium membership on tested I assume?

Jeeze, I didn't hear about the redesign until now, and now that I've seen it... Blegh. They replaced everything with Jamie and Adam this and Jamie and Adam that, completely removing mentions of Will and Norm from the headers and sidebars. I can see why they would want to push the Jamie and Adam angle, but to such a degree is bordering on ridiculous.

My wife used to not care at all about the podcast because it focuses too much on gadgets and gizmos. I played her the most recent podcast and she loved it. I think this is a much better focus for the site and podcast. It will reach a wider audience and will let Will and Norm have a lot more creativity about what kind of content they can cover.

I see absolutely no downsides to the transition.

Because they're not complete assholes and actually care about the community they fostered over those 2 years?

Unfortunately, I think responses like this from the thread here and the threads on Tested and Giant Bomb just proves to companies that they're right about fans and people on the internet. They know that people don't like change, and they know that the vocal minority is just that: a vocal minority. And for new visitors that are being directed to the site by Jamie and Adam, the vocal minority are just jerks who are complaining and trying to ruin this new venture.

As long as people continue to respond like this companies will care less and less. There's no benefit to opening up and trying to handle stuff with care. All they'll get is crap anyway. So the logic goes. From my position, I actually see it as easier to just doing it this way, jumping in head first like this and riding the extremely short wave of discontent out.

Like it was said earlier, I feel worst for Will and Norm -- they don't want to see their community turn like this, especially when they're preparing to invest so much in a new product with a new team.

Jeez...

Wow at the new Tested.com

I find it hilarious that Jamie and Adam are everywhere on the site. It makes perfect sense since they're the big names but it's still hilarious. I'm still happy for Will and Norm though. I think this is a big opportunity for them to become much more famous.
