Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

This week's "Professional Weds" was a huge improvement. A fairly large amount of games shown, decent time spent on each one, good balance of discussion of the game at hand as well as jokes, and classic GB chaos throughout without being a complete clusterfuck.

Awesome. Can't wait.

Is it just me or is the new site's video player absolute shit?

It just stops working half of the time, and it's almost impossible to skip around. I'm not currently a premium member, so no YouTube access.

edit: oh, I just realized that I can access some of their YouTube videos if I go to YouTube! Duh...

Yeah it's pretty fucked up that watching the Youtube version of their videos is a Premium Member feature.

LMAO... so I guess Vinny is modeling on the side?

Wow.

So I'm expecting the GB crew to shit on Judgment. Because Ascension and Judgment are so close to each other in terms of timing and being prequels that the whole justification argument better be consistent. Brad especially has mentioned it multiple times.

Anyway I enjoy this show. It's a good idea even if the GS personalities aren't as engaging.

They talked about how they sorta expect to feel the same way about the new Gears as not really necessary sorta like Ascension on the bombcast. Nobody sounded excited about playing Judgement. Although maybe that will lead to a Brad 5/5! ;)

Patrick playing Sniper 2 was pretty much exactly my experience with the Sniper elite V2 demo, and why I didn't buy the game. Seems like Sniping is just sort of broken once dudes start rushing you with automatic weapons.

Also, am I alone in completely not caring about God of War? Seems fun enough, but I can't get into a game where I actively despise the main character. And Kratos is absolutely awful. I've seen my fair share because I had a roommate in college that was into it, but Kratos just seems like an angry, one-note douchebag. Similar to why I can't enjoy Uncharted.

Just caught up to that point, that somehow seemed tense. I don't think Patrick looked at him even once. :lol

Maxwell is straddling an extremely thin line between being entertaining and being obnoxious. He plays a dangerous game. That said, he is far more natural and comfortable on camera than most of the other GS guys were, so there's that. Chris Watters once again the best GS guy on stream. I look at professional wednesdays as the Giantbomb casting show and he's done well two episodes in a row.

Better? Yes, but I still don#t think they have found the formula.

Yeah I am not sure for what it is good honestly. They play games from the get go and have no idea about their cost, platforms, and wat they are sometimes. And I don't think planning this thing out perfectly would improve it much. I prefer the Friday show much more.

This week's Wednesday show had me laughing out loud a good number of times and is a lot more organized. It's quickly becoming better than TNT.

I honestly am pretty interested in the idea of the shrink shack (TM). Just let them do some research beforehand and then play each game for 10-20 mins, and I fell that should be what the Wednesday show be about.

Professional Wednesdays is kind of difficult to watch with 4+ people constantly talking at the same time.

Show was better this week, but still pretty pointless. Quick Looks show me new games, Unprofessional Fridays (and Breaking Brad...and Random PC Game) show me whatevers. Why do I need another one.

Yep, there still really isn't a point to the show. Well except what soem people have been guessing and this is something that they had to do because of CBSi.

This was the part I had the most trouble with - everybody talking over each other. Quicklooks typically have a pilot and a wingman, but four people, sometimes having two separate simultaneous conversations, is just too much.

And you're spot on. This week's show was literally just "Unprofessional Fridays on a Wednesday co-starring Gamespot". They show us Arma 3 and then Vinny tells me that they're going to be doing a quicklook later on... so... why do I want to see Arma 3 right now? Why would I want to see it again later? Aren't you just going to be saying similar things then as you are now? I already noticed Vinny setting Brad up for identical talking points during Starcraft 2 as they went over in the quicklook. Like, almost word-for-word.

This Wednesday show is overlapping too much of Giantbomb's existing content. While I am not against revisiting a game if it deserves it, this is really pushing the boundaries of "if it deserves it". And in some cases like this, the notion of "revisiting a game" will be the Quicklook itself.

It's better this week, certainly, but the motivation still comes off less as "we want to do this" and more "we were told we needed more cross-site promotion". Not saying everybody isn't having fun doing this Wednesday show, just that I'm really curious as to what's going on behind the scenes - the tinfoil hat voice in my head is connecting the dots between the wig bowling "team building exercise" from a couple weeks ago and this.

I have this niggling feeling that Max is going to be to Gamespot/Giantbomb what Hogan was to the WCW/NWO.

Every game in the stream are pretty much stuff releasing this week though, so it's not really that similar to UF.

I guess thinking about it more, yeah. Maybe that's just higher quality releases this week more than anything. No sticking Patrick with playing two baseball games and an obscure JRPG.

I think the New Releases show is straight up bad. Not the fault of the Gamespot guys, but the format is basically a collection of the worst sort of quicklooks that people are always complaining about, where they don't know the game they're playing and barely talk about it.

Sure, but I have Quick Looks for that.

So this thing is worse than Quick Looks because QLs are longer and more in depth. It's also worse than Unprofessional Fridays because the stuff they can show is dictated by things that are new and not things anyone actually cares about. And everything that anyone there cares about (Like a Starcraft) gets way better coverage in a Quick Look.

So yeah. I don't know what this is for.

The games shown are different, but it's pretty much UF with a focus on new releases. Having quicklooks of games shown is redundant, more so with a whole TNT dedicated to HoTS when it has been featured twice already. All that said, this is still one of their better features and I'd like them to keep working at it. Maybe avoid quicklooks that overlap and check off one of the PC games from their collection instead.

Didn't they say in the beginning of the latest Wednesday show that it's going to be about relatively recent games they're interested in?

I was thinking that it could be a cliffsnotes collection of all of this week's releases, which could be pretty cool, even if it's just for livestream banter between the GB crew.

They still cover games with quick looks, so it's not like they'll stop covering those games in-depth.

I really think it should just be every game of the week in 10-20 minute chunks, even the big releases, with a bit of research done beforehand. A single video that gives a quick overview of the whole of this week's release, with GB's style of livestreaming, is a perfectly valid piece of content I feel. Just have to see if that's the way this show will evolve.

And when there is only one big game of the week (StarCraft II), we get overloaded with it to the point where I don't even want to watch TNT because we've already seen StarCraft II coverage beaten to death.

I'm completely cool with the feature if it doesn't cut into Random PC Games/Flight Clubs, etc. It's hard to really know if it is impacting those features, though, since those features have been on such a long hiatus even before the feature. It's just kind of a wait and see thing for me, since Dave should hopefully be freed up some now that the site is launched and reasonably stable.

I really like the New Releases show (is that even the name any more?), especially this week's.

Can only speak for my own, anecdotal experience, but the amount of QL's I watch has really dropped over the last couple years. Unless it gets a lot of GAF attention, or I catch it live, I just don't watch. So condensing them down into a single live show works out great for me.

With GB becoming more consistent with their live shows and other video, I wonder if their analytics points to it cannibalising their QL views? After all, people only have a limited amount of free time.

Can't wait for all of Brad's iOS quick looks this week

I think he's really going to enjoy Canabalt and Angry Birds Rio
