Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

I've listened to Patrick since his 1up Show / 1up Podcast days and believe me he's come a long way. No one annoyed me more than he did, frothing at the mouth talking over everyone, saying HD didn't matter, acting smug like he had all the answers.

He's mellowed out quite a bit. I think he brings a good perspective to the crew. A lot of times the others blow over things, and are pretty dismissive. Patrick really cares about this shit and sparks a lot of discussions that would have never been present.
I don't think he's changed. He's still outspoken and very confident, while often mistaken. This week he told us TOR was successful through F2P, last week he told us EA 'lost a bunch of money' on it. I do remember the GAF meltdown over his claim GT5 isn't a system seller or whatever, but I think he was probably right there. And HD wasn't a factor for a while.

Anyone know if the panel was recorded/streamed, and if/where/when I can find such a thing?

Didn't see any mention of such on the site itself (probably my google-fu failing me), but I swear I remember the Prime 2012 stream being available at some point.

They said it'd be recorded and probably up by Monday/sometime next week.

The TWD QL wasn't bad because they were biased or because Patrick Is The Devil Arrrgh, it was bad because they didn't play enough to see any of the really bad stuff and they didn't even riff on the bad stuff that was already there because they were barely paying attention. It was 20 minutes of Patrick talking largely to himself about zombie stories before occasionally acting like other journalists were being too harsh on reviewing the game he's barely paid any attention to the first 20 minutes of.

"Hey guys Patrick here with a quicklook of generic as fuck 2d indie platformer #76452 the gimmick in this one is X!"

At this point indie platformers are more generic than COD clones.

He showed some really cool stuff but most of the games I got and was interested in were pretty popular before, like Hotline Miami.

Just this year, No Time to Explain was a Vinny thing, The Bridge was a Ryan thing, Super House of Dead Ninjas was a Vinny thing, and Alien Spidy was a Brad thing. The only indie platformer that Patrick played was Runner 2, which happens to be the best game of all of them.

Spot on.

Anyone else catch-up with Giant Bomb content on weekends while playing 'grindy' games?

I have an unhealthy obsession with MMO betas, and a recorded TNT/UF goes with it perfectly.

Any other almost ritual-like patterns?

Are they friends with Randy Pitchford btw? Not a single mention on the Bombcast of the fallout from Aliens: Colonial Marines since the first Bombcast after it was released as far as I remember

I don't think they're friends, but Pitchford is one of studio heads that is willing sit in on podcast, so they are probably less willing to hate on Gearbox since they "know" him. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though the guys outside of Patrick just don't care to talk about those things on the podcast unless it gets real bad and relative to some of other things that have already happened this year Aliens was not too terrible.

If they can wrangle 2 hours out of Sim City's server issues, you'd think they'd have something to say about a major publisher considering taking a major developer to court for misappropriation of funds :P

tell me more about your absolute rules of social interaction that are applied to every situation and must never be broken
He's wrong about it being a fixed rule but you can't deny that tricky interrupts all the time on the bombcast, he talks a lot but there isn't too much substance to what he says.

The fraud stuff wasn't substantiated in any way. Those were just the opinions of a low level Sega employ and not a person who would have know what had actually gone on during development for Gearbox or Sega. It doesn't seem prudent to me to give voice to somebody who for all intents and purposes was making the same assumptions that you or I would with no real inside information to back it. I imagine the guys felt the same way.

They generally don't go for the jugular. The EA/Riccitello conversation was pretty sympathetic.

Fair enough, was wondering why that story had run out of steam :P

It does seem very dodgy though. Has there ever been a situation where they have to report on something that paints a 'friend of the show' in a particularly poor light?

You should note that was before the discovery and confirmation of "no servers required" to create a offline mode.

I meant the Riccitello leaving stuff. The 'They had to try something to stop the dirty pirates... They were experimenting with a lot of different things... They had no choice but to try all these different business models to try and meet sales targets... etc'

Honestly, it was probably a more rational evaluation of EA's track-record than the 'WORST COMPANY IN AMERICA' side, but it was still pretty gentle.

I just bought a monthly subscription after seeing clips from Unprofessional Fridays on youtube, and
the audio clip you get when you confirm your subscription confirmed I made the right choice.

What's some of the best sub-only content they've done?

Haha, no. That would be such a clusterfuck for programing.

Probably, but it would be a nice thing for the customers. I've been subscribed since the first BLLSL and it would be kind of weird not to be able to watch any of that stuff. I guess I should go download some stuff.

Another thing, and maybe this isn't really Patrick per se, but the Bombcast has a different flow now that it has 5 people on. It doesn't go at the same pace especially when it comes to the comedic parts of the podcast.

It's like when you have a group of friends and then someone brings in someone new, even if you like the guy the dynamic of the group changes because there is another personality that is represented. It's not Patricks fault, and I don't think it would be better if you swapped out Patrick for someone else but I liked the pace of the Vinny/Brad/Ryan/Jeff podcasts better.

That's my biggest complaint with Patrick is that the flow to the bombcasts and every quick look or video he's on just has a different feel to it. I differ from you in that I'd go so far as to state it is his fault because rather than hanging back and letting the show happen, he tends to over take conversations, interrupt (or flat out talk over people), and sometimes even shift topics completely in an attempt to show how much he knows about something.

Hold on a sec, was jeff in cosplay at pax today?

Jeff Gerstmann ‏@jeffgerstmann 27m
Back at the hotel to get out of this ridiculous cosplay getup. Don't think I'll be able to get rid of this hat hair until tomorrow, though.

If true, please tell me there's photos somewhere
