You know what? Someone should make an "Indoctrination" video showing us proof that Brad is conspiring against us.

My gif is turning people away from Team Brad! What have I done?! It was supposed to be a celebration of him not caring about people getting angry at games he likes. : (

Okay, the part about him not caring might be a stretch, but my good intentions are being misconstrued!

I don't really think that's a good example considering xcom isn't all that deep for a game in its genre. There are very few classes and abilities which doesn't offer much depth on how you approach a scenario.

I mean, don't get me wrong, xcom was in my personal top 10 list last year but I don't really find it "deep". The game doesn't offer many options to toy around with.

Actually I found the GB quicklook and Ryan playing it during the goty really weird. I hadn't played the game at the time and the way they made it sound it was this really hardcore game where one mistake could screw you over and you always had to think out each situation so you didn't fuck up. I went into the game with that mindset but found the normal difficulty to be very, very easy. Been doing a classic playthrough since then and I kinda feel like it should have been the "normal" difficulty.

This is almost exactly what I was going to say. Normal is an absolute cakewalk. I haven't even bothered to finish my Normal playthrough, because I'm 85% of the way through it, and have lost maybe 2 soldiers the entire time. The enemies just don't have enough health to make it a challenge. Classic Ironman is where the game actually has some depth. You actually need to plan ahead and have some sort of build order in mind. For instance, rushing to the laser rifle is huge in that mode, since Floaters and Thin men can be one shotted without a crit by the laser. On normal, it doesn't really matter though, since they both have 3 health. You can just fumble your way through it upgrading everything without though. It's nice to give you an overview of what the game is actually like, but there's no real depth to it.

What's wrong with the 5* for Dust? That game was awesome.
I just wanted a buffer for the top and bottom, so I grabbed two of his other reviews, but I got Dust because I remember people being so upset about it having anthro characters in it.

Granted, I've never played any of those reviewed games myself. I just grabbed the titles people were mentioning in here.

Oh right ok, has rudds posted yet?

Honestly this has gotten out of hand, the game has been reviewing well everywhere, grow up people and I say that as someone who doesn't like the reboot idea either. Bloody embarrassing.

Not on this issue, but I think it's like 2am over there.

90 minutes in and I'm really enjoying it. It doesn't have the cheesy, gothic charm or tight combat of OG DMC, but it's a really fun action game that I can't wait to play more of. I'd love it if Capcom JP and Ninja Theory did an Inifinity Ward / Treyarch and produced games in their respective styles every year to eighteen months.

oh my god some of those reactions are hilarious. that cancellation message... I love the way they added Patrick in at the end for no reason.

Brad 5 stars Shoemaker strikes again!

Jeff keeping it real.

Seriously. I'd rather hold out for Revengeance and Bayonetta 2 for my hack and slash fix, but in general the fan reaction can be a little bit dialed back. Their criticisms aren't invalid to some extent, but it doesn't look like anything that is that offensive as a game.

Move on, and hope that something else will come to replace what DMC was to you. If the new one has some success and a fanbase, good for them.

Brad seems like a cool guy, and if he enjoyed a game, why is that bad? Also, that Jeff tumblr reply is pretty much spot-on.

A passionate fanbase, and the importance of metacritic in gaming. Reality is that scores have more impact than they really should. It makes it less about the persons actual thoughts on the game, and more about the label he put on it.

Brad is pretty transparent that he hasn't touched a DMC game since the original, and what he played he highly enjoyed. Based on that he felt it was appropriate to give it a 5 star rating. You can argue he's a somewhat easy critic till you go deaf, but I think that's Giant Bomb's MO to begin with. They aren't really overly critical all the time, as much as I always thought they were really laid back.

I personally do not agree with plenty of his gaming opinions, but there is a fine line between disagreeing with someone and just being a bitch about someone having a different opinion.

I'm a fan of challenging, Japanese action games, but getting bitter over things like this seems like a lot of hard work. Having read many of the DmC threads here, I don't know how these dudes can keep up the toxic attitude for so long. Video games change all the time.

As jg4x up there said, we still have Revengeance coming out. Bayo 2 is a bit of a bummer, though, since I'm not completely sure about owning a Wii U yet.

It's not! But Giant Bomb being a personality driven web site doesn't really mean their reviews are immune to the kind of criticism that literally every single review since the dawn of the modern media review has gotten.

How would you feel if they left out scores altogether and people had to read the text to find out about opinions?

*runs away*

I wish EDGE had the balls to do this years ago but they weren't man enough to do it.

I'm personally worried about it using the pad. I would prefer it be on that standard ghetto 360 pad the wiiu has. I'm too used to how the game played on 360 to want to get used to how it plays on that tablet pad.

And yes Revengeance looks really good.

I might try the new DMC. I love the series(minus 2 obviously), and while I'm not a fan of Ninja Theory(I personally think their previous 2 games suck) I am sort of interested to see how the game holds up. Might rent it or hold out for a steam sale for the 60 frames.

On topic: This isn't the first time there have been major hissy fits over Brad's opinions?

That sounds all right, but it felt like people were finding problems with what he had written too in this one, so I don't think it would have changed this particular case.

Metacritic always says that reviews without scores are given one based on the text of the review, but does this ever actually happen?

Sadly, scores generate clicks. I'm sure the staff would be more than happy to drop them if they didn't.

It would eliminate people only bitching about the score, as well as the people bitching about people bitching at the score.

So probably 3/4 of that comment section.

Game publishers want review scores. So if they want any support along those lines they need to keep scores.

Which is something I've never understood about people, on the internet or off. Like if I wrote a review of Dog's Life on PS2 and said it was one of my favorite games on the system, people would be like, "yo, you're dumb as fuck, that game was shit and you're retarded." Which is fine that they feel that way, but why tell me or complain to someone else about it? It's not going to change my opinion or my score, and I doubt someone with a track record as long as Brad is writing anything with a metacritic rating in mind.

People who would say that about you would be wrong. Dogs Life 4 lyfe.

Brad's thoughts on scores

I think you're looking too much into the score, really. The five stars for Diablo III is essentially saying "Hey, if you like Diablo and want some more of it, then you need to get this game immediately." Those stars are not necessarily saying it's an amazing game for everyone. The stars they give out imply different things on a case by case basis. For me, being someone who was only somewhat interested in Diablo growing up, those five stars next to Diablo III mean very little. I'm sure it was a wonderful experience for people who are into that sort of thing, though.

So does the 5 stars in DmC mean: "Hey, if you like DMC and want some more of it, then you need to get this game immediately." :p

It's really hard to discuss this because reviews can be a very different thing depending on what the reviewer and reader want to get out of it. Video game reviews aren't entirely the subjective kind of opinion your example is. They can be, if the reviewer and reader both are looking to get that out of the review, but they're usually both that and some kind of attempt to inform about what the game is and succeeds or fails at. That's both subjective and partially objective.

Basically, if you read reviews as entirely subjective opinions on games, then why be bothered by those disagreeing with an entirely other view on reviews in the first place?

(Something I almost included in the first part up there: if I think Hitler was an all right person because the Holocaust never happened and WW2 was the USA's fault anyway, does that actually have anything to do with Hitler actually having been an all right person in reality? Not to compare Brad liking DMC to Nazism.)

Oh man, why are people so brutal? I get disagreements but such rage over a person's opinion of a videogame. Obviously, it's nothing new but I still just do not understand that mentality. I feel like I'm as passionate about games as just about anyone and I've never had this kind of reaction.

Immature idiots. That is the problem.

Kids who can't handle when someone disagrees with them. This may be more of an issue with GB due to their younger community who in a sense adopt them as "personal" friends.

Rational gamers might question someone's review, but in the end realise it is all subjective.

Maybe the bold is where I'm sitting at, so I've never understood review debate. I read them as opinion pieces that have a bit dedicated to technical aspects for purchase or enjoyment-related purposes. :shrug

Usually I think Brad's taste sucks but he got love for a Ninja Theory game? Good for him! Enslaved and Heavenly Sword were both very good games/worlds as well.
