Giant Bombcast - 03/17/15

I don't think it's a big deal to not know about it, but acting like only people who follow Disney movies would have heard about one of the biggest pop culture phenomena in recent memory is just lol.

Right, mentions of the movie and song were everywhere on TV and probably the radio. I'm not saying Dan is an asshole, I just am surprised he didn't know what it was. I would think that a movie buff such as Dan would have heard something about it, or seen it mentioned on the Oscars.

Maybe if Sylvester Stallone was in it, he'd pay more attention.

Not getting asinine pop culture references is the one thing people shouldn't get mad about when talking about Dan's ignorance/persona.

The level of concern about Sony was hilarious. They actually think MS is poised to make a come back and Sony need to watch out cause Uncharted got delayed. America really is the whole world to some people.
You know MS is proper fucked when being hopeful about a XB1 comeback is considered an out-of-touch, US-centric, ignorant-of-the-world perspective. :lol

Well, a lot of people out there just don't follow "pop culture" since there are some more important (at least on an invidual basis) issues and cultures that people might be more interested in. I mean, I saw Phish play four sold out shows at Madison Square Garden from December 28-31, 2013 and that is a huge phenomenon to be that popular, yet I bet you 99% of GAF can't name one Phish song. Just because a large amount of people are into a given thing, doesn't mean that everyone has to be aware of it. I don't follow Disney movies I follow Phish, and Dan seems to follow '90's action movies and fast food and more power to him. Not everyone has to have the same tastes in everything.

A better example, to turn the tables, would be the Nolan Batman movies being a big cultural phenomena, but I wouldn't expect my 4 year old Niece to have heard of it.

What are you talking about? He's not an 8 year old girl and doesn't have kids. Why would he have heard of it?
Yeah, people just like getting hung up on weird/stupid personal shit when it comes to site personalities. I think it's some sort of pastime for Giant Bomb fans.

Since you want to make this about me, I basically stopped posting in the OT, so yeah.

Like I said in a previous thread, I regret buying 2 years of premium at this point since the only locked content is Dan-related content and I don't really like Dan on any of the stuff that GB puts out.
Jose whats wrong?

This is the first Bombcast I've listened to for some reason :) It was fun!

Question: I get the impression that they kind of play dumb at a few spots. Ya know, like when people who don't quite know each other and talk about videogames at a party for some reason half-pretend that they don't know exactly what the details are regarding a bunch of games?

Like we don't all know that FFVersusXIII became FFXV? C'mooooon.

It's reaaaally easy to lose track of all the weird dumb shit they do with the Final Fantasy franchise when you're not a fan. Now that you mention it, I do remember that now, but come on, it's not obvious to everybody. Just try to explain all the Fabula Nova Crystallis games to someone who isn't a fan, and not look like a crazy person.

The majority of the U.S. population located outside of a trailer park.

You pronounce the L, period.

You're siding with a man who thought the shells of the egg were the "whites". I implore you to reconsider your pronunciation.

In all my years and living all over the world I've never heard it pronounced that way. Ever.

Dan is who he is but he's right on this.

But as Jeff showed, you can explain it in 10 seconds. It's branding to try to trick people into playing all the 13 spinoff games. It's just that none of the other games came out, so Square decided to milk 13 itself instead. lol

I was freaking out when Dan and Jason starting talking about bar fights and street brawls because I'm pretty sure daydream and renpatsu did not predict their SoR themed thread would be super related to this episode.

When I get home I want to photoshop their heads into SoR characters.

Absolutely not. Though I kind of sit with Jeff and Jason, where enough people get it wrong that it's really a non-issue worth arguing. (And I can't believe I'm even bothering myself)

But Brad is correct, you state the 'L' if you want to not butcher the word.

Now where is the timestamp for the MH4 talk? It's all I really came to this episode for, I've only finished this BBQ/yolk talk and my brain hurts.

Jason was great on this cast. Totally sold on the dude.

Brad listing off the games that emailers dad plays and Jason goes "so he's getting senile in his old age"

That's just hilarious!

Brad seems way too scared of monster hunter online, the community is amazing and playing with randoms is a lot of fun. I've never had anyone say anything unpleasant, and generally people are very friendly.

Multiplayer games with small groups where one person can screw things up tend to be pretty toxic with randoms but for some reason monster hunter isn't like that at all.

Going online really helps break up the solo quests and you can farm for mats really quickly if you get in a good group

Its probably because Brad's experience in Dota 2 and how unwelcoming people can be especially if you say your new to the game.

Got to the contentious part. They constantly overstate how apparently better Xbox One's library is to the PS4's (with Jeff citing games like Forza), and that's just not a fact that applies to everyone. The reason I got a PS4 over an Xbox One is because of its library and potential future announcements based on the brands previously associated with PlayStation rather than the Xbox. I can't be alone in that regard, and it's not like the only reason people went for a PS4 over the other system are the crushed blacks or the higher resolutions that they talked about.

Bloodborne, for example, is more important to me than literally anything the Xbox One has to offer now or currently announced to release in the future. The games do factor into people's decisions, and I'm not sure the Xbox One's library is so much more well regarded by people as they make it seem.

Not that many people buy consoles in hopes that it gets the game they want a year and 4 months after launch.

I don't blame Jeff for thinking the Xbox One is a lot better shape in terms of exclusive content compared to the PS4, what with the latter's underwhelming lineup of first party games.

Not that many people buy consoles in hopes that it gets the game they want a year and 4 months after launch.

What about the games it currently has or the games that have already been announced for it? What's with the arbitrary 16 months date? I'm not talking about people buying the PS4 at launch; I'm talking about people getting a PS4 at literally any point in time, since I'm pretty sure that's what the GB guys were talking about in terms of a dire situation in which Sony's good will ends with consumers.

I don't blame Jeff for having his own opinion about video games. What I'm saying is that it's not some objective fact that Xbox One's lineup is better than the PS4's. I have a PS4 and, more recently, a Wii U for the games they offer. I don't have an Xbox One because I don't currently care enough about the games that console has to offer.

I don't know what to say. Are you bothered that he's not acknowledging the people who are satisfied with the PS4's current library? He's just saying what he thinks. Hell, even he knows Bloodborne is a big deal.

Um, I guess? The only thing I'm talking about is this sentiment that the XB1 library is apparently better than the PS4's, and that's not the first time it's been brought up on the Bombcast. I've never heard them say something to the effect of, "many people prefer the PS4's library to the Xbox One's", while I've heard the opposite all of the time.

I'm not sure what to say either. Why do you think the PS4 was the focus of the "what does current gen. have to offer" discussion on this week's Bombcast and not the Xbox One?

He never said it was an objective fact. They went over this in the last podcast when Dan said that Monster Hunter is a bad game. Everyone doesn't have to say "imo" after speaking. It's implied that it's the person's opinion.

He's definitely allowed to say what he means. The part of the discussion I contend is when he and Brad posit the possibility of Sony squandering their lead.

Look at the games they all listed as their most anticipated games at the end of the podcast: Bloodborne, SF5, MGS5, and Mortal Kombat. Two are PlayStation exclusives and the other 2 have co-marketing deals with Sony. Sony is in a great position to maintain their strong WW lead until UC4 drops.

I do remember that and acknowledge it, but I guess that's just not the vibe I've been getting when this PS4 and XB1 exclusive discussions have been brought up. If their perspective of other people's preferences given the console libraries is implied, and they acknowledge that many people do prefer the PS4's games to the Xbox One's, then I'm wrong for debating a point that isn't theirs.

don't know what yall arguing about... giantbomb has been 'consoles ehhh, get a PC' for YEARS.

well PC + nintendo (except for Jeff, but even he liked bayo2)

Speaking of things Jeff hasnt seen, I was bummed in the Hardline QL when Drew was all ready to talk about the undercover parts of True Detective and the conversation was killed stone dead because, of course, Jeff didn't watch it.

Really liked this week's episode. The talk on PlayStation's first party output felt very warranted.

Still can't imagine listening to an ad-free version of this show, either.

Yes but Jeff was talking about Sony exclusives being a problem for the console buying market when that hasn't been the case yet and there's no sign it will be.

Idk, but usually when they say something like that, they back it up with, "But maybe we're completely wrong and it's the other way. Who knows?" They are really open about the fact they are just speculating.

lol@ Sony dying this year talk.

Bloodborne being the only thing coming out in a while for Sony hasn't stopped/slowed them down.

Seriously...

it's really fine, it's their opinions

Absolutely.

But we still all love the guys despite thinking their being a bit "news-level" panic stations about their opinion.

I mean, it is still our opinion too after all.

For what it's worth, I currently live in Nortb Carolina the same state Brad is from, and the "Yoke"/"yolk" thing is not a thing. Unless you're a total redneck, the L is silent. I hardly ever hear anybody pronounce it.

Another vote here for Jason being on the podcast as a regular. He is the ying to Dan's yang, conversationally, and it led to this being one of my favourite Bombcasts in a little while.

Bring back the 5-man Bombcast. It's time, and well worth it.

Since you want to make this about me, I basically stopped posting in the OT, so yeah.

thank god for bolded part.

sorry you don't like dan. a lot of us do, though.

I've honestly never heard it pronounced that way. I've lived in the northeast my entire life. Where are you from?

My parents both grew up in Missouri, Mother in Kansas City, Missouri, and I've always heard the L pronounced. Jason's apparently from the Kansas City area too and was with Brad on the issue.

So I propose we accept our regional differences, but still call Dan wrong for not knowing his own regional dialect, which shouldn't be surprising given his history with eggs.

Really, whereabouts is the part where Jason chews out Dan.
It doesn't really happen. Jason just says Dan is seeking attention and as a result doesn't engage with him when he makes inflammatory statements. The "worst" thing he says is that he'd let Dan take a few punches first before helping him out in a bar fight.

thank god for bolded part.

Sure, I don't want to thread shit like a lot of the people who complained about Patrick and his "SJW" stuff every other day in the main thread. So I've just been going to the site and the thread less often. I still listen to the Bombcast though, for better or for worse.

Nah

The times 'SJW' (or similar thought trains) has been used non-ironically ended up with the poster being called out. In fact, it probably went too far the other way with unnecessary dog-piling. Criticism of Patrick usually centred on his writing quality.

Not saying it never happened, but at the very least that's a massive overstatement.

Criticism of Patrick usually centred on his writing quality.

Nah, not in bombcast threads. People complained about him for years here and it wasn't about his writing. And it preceded SJW being a thing. Hopefully we don't get the same endless vitriol thrown against Dan thread after thread like we did with Patrick. And maybe we can avoid the awful psychoanalysis of podcast personalities.

It's why I'm mostly in the Bombcast threads now. But I'm going to take Jason's advice and just completely ignore everything Dan says and not post about it anymore.

That said, I would still vastly prefer Jason to be on the podcast than not, and stand by my original statement that I prefer Jason to Dan (which is my post that I originally got quoted on) if there was some kind of "4 person only" rule on the podcast.
