Giant Bombcast - 08/18/2009

It's nice to know that I'm not the only person who has had their interest in Brutal Legend become almost nonexistent.

Same.

Seeing the initial videos and talk of the game I was kinda getting interested. I'm not the sort of dude who usually likes third person action beat em ups. But this one had a really cool theme and everything seemed to be clicking really well.

Then the talk of the multiplayer began. Then talk of RTS. Then talk of that being in the single player. It seems to have lost it's focus on being a fun single player game to a somewhat more serious strategy style of thing and I can honestly say I've lost all the hype I was starting to build. It just seems so scattered now.

Jeff summed it up pretty well in the bombcast I thought.

still listening to the podcast but I did get past the BL talk and yes, ouch. The game comparisions made it sound really bad. That xbox game (and its varient) all bore me.

I really need to find time to play/buy shadow complex. As is... backlogging pacific rift/Wipeout Fury/FFXII... .

need more time

Despite being a Tim Schafer game, Brutal Legend seems to have constantly underwhelmed me the more I hear about it. Jack Black being the star, the whole heavy metal vibe as I'm not too into that genre, and when I first heard it was like God of War I instantly stopped caring. The more I hear about it now, it seems the more I just end up feeling reinforced in my ambivalence about the game.

Brutal Legend really does sound like it's trying to be a Jack-of-all-trades.
In all honesty, the gameplay isn't why I'm excited about the game. Like Psychonauts, I'm interested in it for the charm and atmosphere. Schafer even managed to make Jack Black likable.

This has been one of the funniest bombcasts in a while.
The whole Gearbox robbing banks thing was effing priceless.
shit yes. I was actually laughing out loud while listening to it.

The discussion about Rage being Carmack's manual on how to survive the incoming asteroid fueled apocalypse, while he lives it up with his trusty rocket on the moon was hilarious :lol

Can't believe I haven't heard or read someone connect the dots like that before this. It just makes too much sense not to be true.
this part too.

you guys make my Wednesdays - the busiest day of the week - so much more tolerable.

RE: Brutal Legend - the soundtrack started it, and this talk ended it. I'll rent it and try to like it but it's not looking good.

dammit, almost forgot: so can someone explain the Bionic Commando Rearmed trophies? Because for the longest time it was "nope, not going to happen" and then suddenly it appeared seemingly out of nowhere. But Jeff obviously knew about it because he mentioned it. So how long was it known the game was getting trophies?

Right but I think listening the podcast, it gives people the impression that the game on the whole is some clunky, burdensome RTS game... the way you guys were talking it just seems to be an incomplete description and turns people off.

I think we avoided rehashing the previously seen aspects of the game simply because we've seen so much of it over the course of the year and have talked at length about, well, everything but the RTS stuff. That's all they were showing at this most recent event we went to, but you're right that there's a lot of other stuff packed into the game as well.

People shouldn't get carried away or over-react to one person's opinion about Brutal Legend. Jeff's barely played the game anyway and not everyone is going to like every style of game that exists, including the Giant Bomb crew.

I'm amazed that so many people have allowed their expectations and opinions to be so easily inverted based on one guy's prediction on what a game might be.

At least wait until the demo before writing it off!

Most of the time when games try to mix genres (like action-adventure and RTS) it comes out less then the sum of its parts.
