Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

uFpHO.png

So... does that mean we're not entitled to opinions?

I had no interest in this endurance run but have watched because the cry babying about them doing stuff wrong is hilarious and amazing in the worst way.

Seriously if this makes you THIS angry DON'T WATCH.

If you hate it and keep watching day after day just to complain you are an entitled little twat.

Remember the shitty farmville feature? It was awful! I watched 2/3 eps said "well this is shitty oh well" and that's it. Noone watched so they stopped making it!

He's right. The criticism from people who've beaten the game and seem to know every intimate detail of playing it perfectly is silly. It's their first time playing the game (in bite-sized increments, no less) and playing perfectly is not the point here. Enjoy it for what it is people!

How do you strike the balance?!

Realize that I've made dumb mistakes in games in the past and realize them making a dumb mistake in a game is more frequent when trying to talk over it, and not to interpret them making a dumb mistake as them pooping in my coffee. It's not hard.

If they just followed some FAQ or double checked everything the videos would be awful in every way.

Every time someone uses the "playing perfectly" or "FAQ speed run with no jokes" strawmen, an angel cries.

People seriously need to chill out and let them play the game. People want this to be some kind of perfect run and whenever they do something not on the official path of Chrono Trigger everyone freaks out.

This is part of the appeal of the endurance run for me since I have played the game so many times and have everything memorized that I never really do anything different. It's nice to see someone play it differently even if it doesn't turn out great.

Of course that stuff is silly. They don't know what the characters will learn or who is the optimum healer or whatever and that stuff doesn't really matter. They are playing fine for the most part and have a solid party (well from what I've seen). The stuff where they mess up though is like, in big ways that you don't need to have played or beaten Chrono Trigger to criticise. Things like not reading stuff properly/skimming over important things and forgetting that your flying time machine can travel through time. I've not played past the very first visit to the future in the game (like, 2 hours or so in) and I'm picking up on these things by reading the dialouge/popups in battle and remembering what their beautifully named time machine can do.

I'm still enjoying the ER loads and look forward to it every weekday. I like Ryan and Patrick, just because I like them and the thing they are doing doesn't mean I can't find things to criticise about it.

Here we go again with this "perfect" stuff. No one's complaining that they aren't playing it perfectly, unless you think things like reading text and remembering what happened five minutes ago defines perfect gameplay mastery.

It doesn't mater if we pay them or not. Just because something's free doesn't make it immune to criticism.

That's not what I meant, this is:

Criticize it all you want, but don't justify it by saying you payed for it.

There's a big difference between being a customer who isn't satisfied with a product or service he has paid for, and just generally being 'angry' at two people because they're sharing recordings of them playing a video game suboptimally.

Edit: Maybe 'suboptimally' is a bit strong, but you (hopefully) get my point. Also, that should probably be 'frustrated' rather than 'angry'.

This "perfect run" stuff is hilarious. They forgot a FLYING TIME MACHINE that they just FOUGHT AN ENEMY ON TOP OF after the game just STRESSED how much he was customizing it, and they complained about how much they HATED HIM for doing so. They then HAD CONTROL of said FLYING TIME MACHINE and LEFT IT IN THE SNOW in favor of using TIME WARPS AGAIN.

:LOL

Of course we could not watch it, but anyone that sees someone screwing up this horribly and DOESN'T want to just shake the person and say "NO! BAD!" so that they get it is someone I can't understand. If Ryan can't see humor in the situation (It's funny in a 'shaking my head and looking at the floor' kind of way) then he IS a bit of a baby. If it wasn't entertaining, we wouldn't watch it. Entertainment value isn't in question here, if we're not allowed to discuss and criticize an ER then what's the point of it?

Also, 'free' or not, we're all always paying them. The thread existing and sitting on the front page is advertising for their site, us discussing them generates interest. Without 'free' content they wouldn't entice people to subscribe, so the argument that that somehow makes it unimportant is idiotic: the free content is MORE important to their livelihood than the paid content.

I think people just need to stop watching if you expect them to play exactly like you would, even if that boils down to forgetting things or not reading/retaining story details.

EDIT: Plus they are playing plenty of other games concurrently with this one, sorry if they mess up sometimes.

It's like the complainers have never gone to the wrong town in an RPG or something similar. People make mistakes in games?!

So... does that mean we're not entitled to opinions?

There's a bit of overreaction going on in this thread, so, yeah. Having an opinion does not mean you are correct or that it is a sound opinion, it just means you have formed a thought. Congratulations!

They're making some pretty dumb mistakes, no doubt, but everything always seems easier when you're barking orders from the back seat.

You know, everything up until 2poch had me impressed, they were pretty on the ball with figuring out how to get through that stealth section without too much trouble and they even bagged Bagus much to my surprise. Then.... God man. Their frustration with the game makes it even worse when Ryan says "This game...." under his breath completely oblivious to what he's doing wrong. Patrick is supposed to be the RPG guy there to prevent shit like this from going down.

There are mistakes, then there's forgetting a flying time machine.

It'll all be worth it if they have a "OMG WE'VE COULD'VE USED 2POCH" moment in the coming episodes.

This argument seems ridiculous too though.
It doesn't SEEM easier.
A lot of us played this game when we were fucking little kids, I beat CT in like a week when I was 13 and it first came out, it makes this stuff painfully obvious.

People miss things sometimes, sure. People don't repeatedly miss EVERY single thing every time they play a game though.

I'm just going to assume this whole thing was an unsubtle attempt at completely killing off the idea of an endurance run because the other possibility is much less flattering to the two at the helm

You take complaints about free content on a video game website pretty fucking seriously huh?

No, not really because I'm not a huge whiny baby. :D I'm not angry, I just think you're all acting like children and I can't at all blame Ryan for being annoyed. You wanted an Endurance Run, here it is. Enjoy it, ignore it... Do whichever you want.

I mean, what do you want them to do? Have Patrick on the phone with the Nintendo Power hotline? It's just ridiculous.

I'd like to take the idea that something free is immune from criticism or any other form of negative discussion and shove it up the anti-intellectual anus it spewed out from.

When Vinny makes a mistake: Haha oh man that's so funny Vinny you are the best
When Ryan makes a mistake: Oh my God this is the worst thing ever how can he be so bad at games.

So true. I think people are just getting frustrated that they can't say "yo, you missed something!" while they watch. Just let it go, relax, and enjoy the show.

When Vinny makes a mistake: Haha oh man that's so funny Vinny you are the best
When Ryan makes a mistake: Oh my God this is the worst thing ever how can he be so bad at games.

Vinny suddenly realizes he selected the wrong thing by mistake and goes "oh whoops sorry I'm dumb" and the incident becomes notable for how rare it was.

Ryan makes a mistake because he has anterograde amnesia and then blames the game for it and it's the 12th time he's done it that day.

What the hell is going on here?

They've made some pretty terrible mistakes while playing this game and people are pointing them out, making fun and/or complaining. So what? Isn't that the whole point of the endurance run, to experience the game alongside the person playing it for the first time? Having all the viewers collectively yelling at their monitors seems like it should be part of the experience (at least it is for me), so why are certain people copping this "sit down and shut up" attitude? Is everybody supposed to just watch the episodes and then clap politely at the end?

Even worse is how Ryan is now throwing it back in people's faces. Complaints about their poor performance just shows that people are actually interested. They come back to watch even more. Why threaten to take that away from everybody?

Using bufu accidentally one time and suboptimal fusions from choosing not to re-roll personas for 10 minutes is exactly the same thing as a lack of basic reading comprehension and understanding yes

Also Ryan goes through the combat menus like a 90 old man

I understand the reaction completely, and for the most part I share it. Difference is; I don't write comments about either here or on GB, because I know that doing so does LITERALLY nothing but create a bad atmosphere, and I most certainly do not directly message Ryan with "You must all have just wanted everyone to stop asking you for ERs ever again, so engineered the worst possible ER you could.", which is in itself a crowning achievement in sounding like an entitled nitwit, and which is what ultimately provoked Ryan's statement.

The value of having a topic discussing a series of Giant Bomb videos on NeoGaf, and the direct amount of subscribers that this would ultimately generate for Whiskey Media, can at most be WILDLY speculative, and for the most part, I would assume, completely negligible for whether or not Giant Bomb is a successful business.

So I've never played Psychonauts before, and I got it during the Steam Winter Sale. Part of me thought, "You know what? I should get into this whole streaming thing and do a Let's Play of me playing Psychonauts for the first time. That could be a lot of fun."

But after seeing the ridiculous reactions of people in this thread, I've decided that I don't want to have a new hole torn in me by self-righteous, indignant gamers who are getting off on the feeling that comes with trashing someone who's bad at something they're good at. Thanks guys!

No seriously, thanks. It was a dumb idea anyway that would have just ended up wasting time I don't have. Now I can enjoy the game in blissful ignorance.

When Vinny makes a mistake: Haha oh man that's so funny Vinny you are the best
When Ryan makes a mistake: Oh my God this is the worst thing ever how can he be so bad at games.

If it said "DON'T CAST ICE" in big block letters covering 1/4th the screen and neither Vinny or Jeff saw it, I'd be just as frustrated.

Were you on camera, constantly talking when you were playing? How much of your brain was being dedicated to the thought of, "I must be entertaining to an audience"?

Contrary to popular belief, playing for an audience doesn't actually make you better at a game. Usually, it's the opposite. Almost nobody in any GiantBomb thread seems to understand this, and most casually brush it off.

I've done livestreaming, and even when I don't have to worry about talking to people as I play, the nagging thought in the back of my mind that I have an audience to please is just enough to throw a monkey wrench in to the whole thing. Think of it more like watching a movie with a friend, and throughout the entire film you're holding a conversation with that friend. You're going to miss things. It's inevitable. Anybody who says otherwise is a liar.

Plus, who gives a shit? If you don't like it, nobody's forcing you to watch it.

Personally, I love it. Yeah, it's dumb when they make a mistake, but Ryan and Patrick have also been way more self-aware than either Persona 4 or Deadly Premonition; they've really buckled down and tried hard to appropriately pay attention to specific bits of text, etc.

But the most important part of the Endurance Run for me is that it makes me feel like I'm experiencing the game again for the first time through their eyes. I wouldn't get that with a "perfect run". The mistakes are part of that, because everybody makes them, even if nobody remembers that they did (who would want to REMEMBER mistakes?)
