So I've been pretty unimpressed with Glee for quite a while now. The last two episodes before this last one, especially, were offensively badly written and just plain offensive respectively. But the Rocky Horror episode is a chance to redeem itself. It will be especially redeemed if at some point Brittany (anyone, really, but if it's her it'll seem accidental) says "slut" after someone says Janet for some reason.

OMG YES :lol

Amazing episode. Everything i want out of Glee right there. Easily one of the best written and directed episodes of the show. It utilised the ensemble so well, that i didn't even notice the lack of Jane Lynch till it ended. All of the character interactions felt honest and realistic and there wasn't any hokey melodrama or cloying piano score playing incessantly over the "tender" moments. Eric Stoltz (!!) needs to come back and direct more episodes.

The duets were all well staged, lively and funny. Tina and Mike's was definite highlight for me, but i also loved Kurt's number.

Crazy Rachel was back in top form too. She got so many great delusional lines in this one.

Plus there was a shocking amount of continuity!! So glad they followed up the whole Finn/Kurt debacle from last season. The way they left that situation, with Kurt getting off scott free for his behavior, always left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think this show just made me a Brittany and Artie shipper... :lol

Wow, this was an amazing episode. Rachel and Kurt's duet at the end was really really awesome. :D

also <3333 sam

would in a heartbeat

I was just reading the AV Club's review of this episode and i found the different take on the 3 co-showrunners (who i hadn't realised were the only writers of the show until now) and their conflicting styles really interesting. I hadn't come across this "3 Glees" theory, as Todd VanDerWerff dubbed it, before now, but it totally makes sense to me and explains why this show fluctuates so wildly in quality a lot of the time.

Gaf's Memles has a nice page devoted to it too: The 3 Glees

As per Todd VanDerWerff of The A.V. Club, in his review of “Throwdown,” the theory of the “3 Glees” is the result of the series’ somewhat strange writing process:

It [is] written entirely by its three creators – Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan – but all three of those creators also seem to have wildly different ideas of what the show is. Murphy…is most interested in making the show a funhouse mirror version of an afterschool special. Brennan…is most interested in the sadness buried down at the core of the show’s concept. And Falchuk…is most interested in pulling the two approaches together in a hybridized fashion while deepening the teenage characters on the show.
Guess i'm on the Ian Brennan bandwagon. He wrote the the season premiere and this weeks, both of which i loved, whilst Murphy and Falchuk gave us the last two dreadful episodes. All of them are responsible for episodes i hate or love, but he definitely seems to be the most consistent and his writing sensibilities appeal to me much more.

Really good episode, only missing Sue.

I have really been on a verge of writing off this show, but I liked both of the last two episodes. This one being almost all song numbers really helped. Less plot, more music! And the music was good, too.

It's too bad that Sam isn't gay, but Kurt will get his eventually.

I'm still not completely sure of that (the "all-boys boarding school" reference, taken with the reported plot for Episode 6, make me wonder), but we'll see. At the very least, I think the Sam/Quinn relationship is just too obvious to maintain without throwing some kind of curveball in there.

It's more budgetary than signaling a temporary status: they will likely appear in fewer episodes, get paid less, etc.

Standard practice, really.

Over-all I liked the episode. The idea that Brittney and Santana are "scissoring" when there isn't a boy around to bang is hysterical. My only problem was Artie. A kid in a wheelchair loses his virginity to one of the top cheerleaders in his school and he's suddenly bummed about it because another Cheerio talked some smack? It's bullshit. That kid would be all over Brittney in the real world. He'd be aching for more not depressed that she had ulterior motives.

I hope the overwhelmingly positive response to this episode kicks the writing up a notch consistently.
just remember the rocky horror episode will most likely not have any real major plot progression.

I think Glee is done for me. I was totally bored with Duet episode. Nothing feels real or sophisticated and its just paint by numbers TV making.

Real? Sophisticated? It's a comedy about high school where people break out into songs and dances. What's supposed to be real or sophisticated about that?

The dialogue is banal, the drama pushes the limits of melodrama, the characters are not three dimensional.

A comedy? Really? I can't say I've laughed at an episode of Glee that wasn't an inane Brittany line. If thats what its trying to be it fails miserably.

Question: Season’s greetings! Will there be a Christmas Glee episode? —Ryan
Ausiello: Can’t confirm a Christmas episode. I can tell you that something big happens around the holidays, and it may or may not involve a wedding.
Question: Where is Mark Salling? Is he gone permanently? Is it due to his release of a non-Glee album? You have to know something about this, right?! —Missy
Ausiello: Puck up, Missy! Though I dunno whether his absence is a side effect of his decision work on music that isn’t in the genre of R&Glee, I do know that it’s only temporary. He’ll miss one more episode—the Oct. 26 Rocky Horror Picture Show tribute—but will be back on air in a big way in early November.

Overall, CBS and Fox tied for the nightly win. Fox's "Glee" (11.4 million, 4.7) grew a tenth. ABC was third, and NBC ranked fourth with "The Biggest Loser" (7 million, 2.6), up a tenth, and "Parenthood" (4.7 million, 2.0), down a peg to a series low.

I thought that Duets was a really good episode. What was meant to be inappropriate about the Finn and Rachel number? I wasn't paying much attention when I watched it, so all I noticed was the fact that they were holding hands as a nun and a priest.

So the grilled cheese episode was awful. If nothing else, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, (while pretty, and out-of-context I'd've enjoyed it) was completely outta nowhere. I would have preferred a Kurt-solo version of, say, Imagine, even if they have done it before. Or, more to the point, Kurt could have sang the song from Yentl. But the complaints for that episode are numerous; instead I will think about the Duets episode, which was really good.

I'm in the camp that thinks that Glee should be like it was in Duets: smart, dark character-driven humor; songs that make sense (or show a nice contrast) thematically; and an over-arching plot that actually progresses.

Also, Rachel and Finn were genuinely entertaining this episode, I think because it didn't center around the two of them.

What is the reported 6 episode plot line?

Which oddly doesn't have an episode title yet?

Title is "Never Been Kissed."

The episode
introduces a rival glee club at an all-boys school, one of whose members is openly gay and will be a recurring character for the rest of the season.
It's not airing until Nov. 9 due to the election, so it's a ways off.

Sam basically outright said he's not gay, and it was played as a very direct "that's ridiculous" rather than a "no! WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT I HATE PENIS" kind of thing. He's not gay.

Ah so I guess that's the episode that will introduce
Kurt's real boyfriend since it's not Sam like I said I read a couple of weeks ago.

you act as though these characters act consistent from one episode to the next...

Dead

well not really...yet
Wow, OAK (Other Asian Kid) had more lines in this episode than he has the entire series so far :lol

I am the last person to give this show any credit for writing at this point. I still think it's pretty much settled.

Correct me if I'm wrong, (which is likely :lol) but didn't Kurt think he was gay based on his hair being dyed which was then confirmed at the end of the episode?

Kurt was half-right. Sam doesn't dye his hair; he merely put lemon juice in it.

In any case, am I the only one who keeps on thinking that Sam looks like The Joker when he opens his mouth? It's just so... big.

That is dyeing your hair. It's just a natural way of doing it.

Anyway, I could still see Sam as being bisexual.

Now to the RHPS episode, I'm pretty excited about it but I've heard some of the song previews and the censorship in some of the songs is ridiculous and nonsensical.

The words they've deemed "inappropriate" are just silly, especially with the dialogue on this show. This show is not for kids so they should stop putting on pretenses.

jdogmoney said:
Wasn't there talk of scissoring last episode?
Precisely my point. Little kids should not be watching this show anyway, so I'd rather they stop making random concessions for their "benefit".

I think it's understandable that they'd make the music as accessible as possible. Someone may want to purchase a song without ever watching an episode.

Just because he's not gay doesn't mean he's not bisexual.

but i just saw a rumor about kurt's potential new lover towards the end of the season anyway so nvm

In general that may be true, but I doubt anyone wanting songs from the Rocky Horror Picture Show specifically would be completely oblivious to their tone and meaning.

Censoring these songs in particular defeats their entire purpose and I don't know why they would even consider doing a RHPS episode if they aren't going to go full force with it.

ZephyrFate said:

This is my suspicion right now - there's just too much out there indicating that Sam was at least originally intended to be Kurt's BF to convince me just yet that Murphy et al. went in a complete 180 from that plan. But we'll see whether future episodes offer any support for that.

Anyway, I hear the complete soundtrack from the Rocky Horror episode leaked. Hooray for awkward censorship! (Mercedes as
Frank-N-Furter is certainly, um, inspired.
