I just got the free upgrade to the PS4 version. I might as well get it downloaded and try the free week in order to see if it wins me over this time. If anything, I know I will at least love being in the world again. That was the highlight for me.

I've been playing a bit since Thursday night... I sort of remember why I quit :p I was sort of bored within a few hours soloing FATEs and Levequests. I mean, that's pretty typical of any MMO if you're not yet 'attached' or 'inspired' yet. Not a complaint lol. I'm going to keep playing a bit every night though... I think I quit ARR the first time at around Lv40 or Lv41, and since them I've got a couple levels or so on free log-in weekends and I'm up to Lv44 now... At the very least, I want to get my Dragoon job armour haha.

Game still looks beautiful... actually, the effects are less of an improvement than I expected. It's basically just higher res... I don't see any effects really that weren't on PS3. But the frame rate feels like it hits 60 FPS at times... it's definitely not stable, and outside it's weird... it feels like the character animations are 45-55 FPS but the weather mobs are 30 FPS. But it's super smooth inside buildings.

And damn is the weather and day/night still gorgeous... the sunrises and sunsets over Ul'dah, or that heat wave effect in southern Thanalan and then the wide open grassy steppes of Central... just gorgeous. I think it's better than any SP offering in a long time... Skyrim obviously has far more scale. And Dragon Age INQ has better picture-esque vistas that are very.... tailored. But overall I think XIV is often more beautiful to explore, especially over a long period when you can appreciate all the weather and time changes.

Are you socializing at all? Post your server in the Community OT, they'll take care of you.

nah don't really have the time/attention to play a MMO like that right now, basically solo for 15-30 minute spurts whatever I can spare :)

and I think I'm on a different server than most of GAF anymore (Gilgamesh)

it's OK just soloing around is enough for me, don't really want to play it like I used to play WoW or FFXI haha and the game is still pretty good for an MMO to play in short solo spurts. beautiful world, fun combat, lots of fan service and voice acted cutscenes to keep interesting.

Is the chocobo race against real people? I'm winning almost every race and I've played dozens of them. Maybe I got lucky with my chocobo's initial stats.

I haven't played this in ages so I reinstalled for the free week. I have a level 19 something or other and I can't find a way to get to the Gold Saucer. If I try to go to the Character menu in the lower right corner of the screen (in the mouse/keyboard UI), I get a message "That command is unavailable at this time."

Am I missing something really obvious or is the Gold Saucer restricted to paying users only?

The Gold Saucer quest is in Ul'dah. I think you have to unlock airship travel during the main story quests too.

How do I get into this? The Airship Ticketer keeps saying I need a "ticket" for the gold saucer..

There si a guy in Ul'dah with the quest. He's like, striaght ahead if you leave the main Aetheryte plaza thing I think.

I had the feeling as well. My advice is avoid FATE, they're optional. They're indeed the fastest way to level up, but they're just boring after a while. Besides story quests, do some side quests, levequests, or hunt. That way, you'll come across some new environments and monster and I hope you'll enjoy the game more.

Regarding job armour, you'll finally get the complete set at level 50. The chest armor is the final quest reward at level 50.

Low-level Duty Roulette is another great option if you're leveling, guys. Just be sure to check Join In-Progress if you're a DPS class as the wait times can be brutal. Also try to do some of the Challenge Log (and the Hunt Log that comes with every class).

Gaf is on ultros? I had my old character there, only lv 17 and just got airship pass in the story. Can I get an invite to gaf group/community? They're called linkshell here aren't they?

Glad it worked out for you :) And yeah I agree, FF14 has one of the best if not the best MMO world for me!

When is SQEX going to allow character name changes for a fee? It can't be hard to implement and it's free money, as lots of people would jump at the chance to change their names. I chose mine with little forethought.

I think this is the last time I'll play FFXIV. I planned on keeping the game installed for free weekends and weeks but all I do is log on once a day for 5 - 30 minutes doing absolutely nothing, well other than trying to talk with old buddies that are still in the linkshell. Sometimes they can't see chat and there's so little talking going on. I'll keep logging on each day for that lottery thing in gold saucer just to do it. If I won the 10k saucer points I'll try to spend it on something before the last log in (if there's something worth 10k points).

What I will continue to do is catch a stream when new content is out and see what's going on and experience it through videos instead. Looking forward to seeing people use Dark Knight and Machinist.

I downloaded a 14 day trial and love this game, I've been on WoW for the past 6 years and it's still a great game however after needing a change this game has really satisfied that desire.

Yeah I think I'll do the same (until it goes f2p at least)

it's just there is so little content I can't justify keeping the sub

So little content? I've been playing on and off for just over a year now and there's still tons of content that I haven't even touched yet.

Also, the number of subscribers seems to be on the rise (the current free login campaign was launched to celebrate 4 million registered accounts), so the game is definitely not going f2p anytime soon.

Chocobo Racing is a lot of fun. Simple but it's definitely not a gimmick. Genuinely good gameplay foundation for both racing and leveling/breeding. Wish we could use your chocobo mount/companion, and sort of have a a single 'chocobo stable' that better ties in all our mounts and companions, but this would likely be the obvious first choice by the devs, so that it's not this way is probably for technical reasons.

Triple Triad... basically, for some people I could now see FFXIV being a card game MMO with questing and raiding mini-games lol the art of the cards, the music... wish every FF had Triple Triad and chocobo breeding.

The reason I say the linkshell people may not be able to see chat is because chat is disabled in dungeons and stuff, so I just assume people could be afk or in a event that don't allow outside talk. I don't like that, do people really get messed up by outside chat that they step on the red danger circles and yell at SE that chat should be disabled in dungeons and stuff? Also even if I do gear my classes out I probably won't end up doing cool things with you guys anyway (live in Duty Finder foreva). No one will need my help to kill demon bunnies, or to do random things in this game I feel. I kinda wanted this, not needing too much help so I could just do things (darn you FFXI Assaults which are like FFXIV dungeons, need people to even enter), when I played FFXI but so much is behind dungeons, and the open world stuff being too easy kinda gave me a careful what you wish for result. I can't solo or duo dungeons like me and Hoga used to duo Limbus, and there were no crazy open world solo or duo challenging things.

I've been keeping my eye on the expansion though, and before this free week I expected to get it. Heck I might even just sub after the week is over to push myself to start leveling and using duty finder anyway (my old FATE areas seem dead. I lived in fates and stayed away from dungeons). If I do this, the question is do I level WHM or Warrior seriously. I asked if you liked tanking while I noticed you was on your warrior and you said it depended on the fight, and you seem to like being whm. I might start out on whm since I need to unlock stoneskin anyway, and see if I get into living with DF always searching, though I know tanks get faster DF, and the only reason I'm not considering one of the DD classes is waiting too long for DF will just put me off again.

I have no idea what's up with SCH anymore, it's pet behaviors and how people use it now. That's one of the main reasons I sit around doing nothing. After the whole obey and sic changes patch which confused me until I realized I had to target a mob to activate obey to remove free will, I feel the pets may have been changed again. I had so many tricky controller macros that put Eos, or Selene's abilities on my main bar by pressing their respective summon macro. Maybe doing WHM will ease me back into how I had SCH setup and see what other people are doing with it's pets these days. I treated my pets like I treated Beastmaster on FFXI, constantly controlled their positions especially with the fairies since they apparently healed the closest person more frequently, and told them to do abilities.

Also it's good to see the game didn't get crazier than Titan Extreme danger zones spam from what I observed.

Only whisper/tell is disabled while in dungeons. Everything else still works. During cutscenes you can click enter or whatever to make the chat box appear too.

The EU PlayStation Blog says FFXIV will be 50% off until March 18th:
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2015...s-featuring-last-us-remastered-final-fantasy/

You could pick up the standard edition on PS3 for about €10 or £10, then use the free upgrade campaign (which ends March 31) to get the PS4 version for cheeeeap.

It's £2-£3 in the UK for a physical copy. Campaign ends April 1st 8AM GMT. That is what i did though and got 2 months sub, activate 2x ps3 versions(after upgrading the first copy).

Oh thanks. I was wondering why it was that they disabled the chat features, but since it's tell only, and maybe LS controls like adding a person to the linkshell (Saw someone unable to do this while in a dungeon on a stream) I can see why. Someone could spam the person so they wouldn't be able to see party chat, though in that case I'd just turn tells off.

At the pace they're adding stuff, though? I find this to be a really strange complaint.

Good luck waiting for F2P, though. Even XI still isn't F2P, and probably never will be; nor will XIV.
