[gonintendo] Latest Switch 2 firmware update appears to be killing select third party docks

While every Switch 2 comes with an official dock, third parties have been offering their own solutions as well. These third party docks often change form factor over what Nintendo provides, and they include unique features and abilities as well. The thing is, you never know just when those docks might run into issues, and it appears that's exactly what's happening right now.

Just last night, the Switch 2 received a firmware update. The update brought with it a litany of tweaks and adjustments, but it also seems to have caused some problems for select third party dock owners as well. According to a variety of hands-on reports and forum posts, a handful of Switch 2 third party docks have ceased to function after the firmware update.

It's not clear what exact third party docks are experiencing issues, but there are simply too many reports out there to say that the malfunctions are coincidence. It's clear Nintendo has done something in this latest firmware update to bork third party Switch 2 docks, and now the question is whether or not the companies behind these docks can get them up-and-running again.

Shit. I'm gonna go test mine now. Will report back.

Third party products are always a gamble. I'd never buy a non-official dock for a switch 2 myself. Only thing I'd go third party with would be a cheap controller for my kids.

My switch 2 still on the first firmware they released. so not planning to upgrade ( don't really use it much. even donkey kong didn't finish yet ). with that being said, is the Killswitch from Dbrand 2 wont work either ( its what I have ).
From my understanding, the killswitch is just a USB c extension on a plastic dock. so in should be ok still no ?

THESE MOTHERFUCKERS.

Can confirm. I have a portable 3rd-party dock that worked perfectly until the latest update. Now it just doesn't work.

Dude fuck Nintendo. This is anti-consumer and total bullshit.

Can I tear down the offical dock and 3D print one that is easier to insert the Switch 2 into? I dislike scraping the screen trying to get it into the official dock under the TV.

That's some bullshit man. Sorry to hear it. No reason for this crap

Dude, that's complete BS. And not like they have an actual viable product with travel docks as their own is ginormous.

So they are f-ng over other folks why? For the love of the game? 😡

No reason why you couldn't. Just remember it's $100 if you mess it up. Pretty sure I saw a YouTube video with that sort of a project.

Man, I'm so sorry, that really sucks.

No kidding, I don't even have a Switch 2 yet, but stuff like this just makes me want to wait more and more. Complete anti-consumer behavior and it's gross AF.

Welcome to nintendo's world. I've been in for years and stopped two years ago. They're probably the greediest company out there

To be fair. if you the owner of Nintendo ( or any company really ), and you have this Dock for your own system that you created, do you want some Chinese 3rd party companies making something for your popular system that you created and you don't make money of it ?

Not to mention it will also stop/slow the sales for your own dock.

If these companies wanted to make a dock, make it a licensed dock like every 3rd party company does for controllers for example with MS and Sony, why when it comes to Nintendo its anti-consumer?

I am not even a Nintendo fan, aside from a few games. But I do find this a bit logical, even if it's hurting my wallet.

What you mean by some Chinese companies? Nintendo Switch and several other consolle are made in China. I get what you mean but Nintendo doesn't have ANY third party licensed dock. We can buy better controller than the pro thanks to licensed controller from 8bit by we can't get any cheap dock cause Nintendo doesn't want to collaborate for this. So if something happens and I don't want to spend more than 100$ for a dock I would like to buy a third party one to save money. You can't even plug the switch easily on a television with HDMI or USB C cause Nintendo's USB C on switch 2 is bullshit and decrypted

I don't see it this way. Let's say you are a new start up company and somehow you managed to get a license from Nintendo to make a dock or third party controller . Obviously that license does cost you money per unit. So you have a base cost is let's say 50$ between parts and a license. So in order to make a slight profit let's say 80$ minimum. How would you feel if a third party company is making the same dock / controller and selling it for much less because they are not paying a license ?

Asking for license for your own product isn't greed but a logical business ( or at least the way I see it ).

Nintendo won't care till people stop buying their products, it would be dumb to do otherwise.

Then make it a proprietary dock and control the market. Killing third party products after the fact is just shitty. Not just to the company, but the customer.

Fuck my lil portable one from Amazon no longer works.
Fucking cunts. It was a perfect travel one. Your OEM big ass brick dock is not portable.

Nintendo is the only company I will not buy third party accessories for. At least they are only blocking docks and not bricking consoles this time.

I have a third party dock too. Gonna try it after work. I'm worried now it's not functional. If Nintendo bricked it they can go fuck themselves.

I have one too for my living room.

I'm not updating shit now.

Seriously, fuck this company.

First of all these companies didn't have the license or the rights to make a product for the switch 2 in the first place. This is the risk you get for buying a cheap 3rd party product

Didn't MS do this not too long ago where they shut down many controllers with a software update for the Xbox ? This is just a normal behavior.

Also, I thought USC C is the standard for charging in Europe by law. Which what forced apple to go usb C no ? I don't think they can make it a proprietary even if they wanted to.

Not that would help them anyway. Plenty of not original lighting cables around for 2$.

I dunno I think agree to disagree I guess. If there is a third party product that is lowering the sales of my product for a device that I created, I sure as hell would try to stop it ( speaking in general ) .

This isn't just about charging. Plenty of proprietary tech in consoles.

But yeah.....agree to disagree.

Just when I was thinking my man Topher was only mean to XBox.....

I wasn't even aware that the switch 2 had third party docks. lol

Nintendo should really sale docks in stores.

Unless the items are licensed by Nintendo, I don't buy anything third party for Nintendo consoles. They've been dickish about unlicensed third party hardware since the GameCube days. It's just not worth the risk, and since intellectual property law is on Nintendo's side they know they can get away with this shit.

People who want a more portable Switch 2 dock are probably better off waiting for someone to do what was done for the OG Switch where people made a compact shell that you'd transplant the official dock hardware into.

On one hand it's a shitty move. On the other hand having licensed products and then allowing non-license ones kinda defeats the purpose of the license - it's the same factory belt in China, just reserved for different customers, you can see plenty of products like that on Amazon.

I mean… if you read these lines with a minimum of attention, it doesn't necessarily sound intentional on Nintendo's part, no?
Why kill select docks and not every single one except their own, then?

Fortunately every console comes with its own official dock, and the system also happens to work on the go without a dock.

When my OG Switch was a few months old, I took a vacation with friends and just packed the dock in a travel suitcase. It survived with zero issues. It was a bit cumbersome and it did raise some suspicion when it was detected by the scanner at the airport, but that was all.

Has anyone thought of, you know, blaming the manufacturers of (possibly unlicensed) third-party docks, and maybe mailing them instead of blaming Nintendo for killing their docks in particular and not others? Nintendo never had a duty to make sure updates worked with unofficial peripherals.
