Probably because that's a third party new tab page. Disable or uninstall it from chrome://settings/extensionSettings and you should be good to go.

Ahhhhhhh! I had completely forgotten that I installed that. Thanks!

No problem. :)

Also I know I've said this a lot, but I actually am working on a new OP right now. Should be live today or tomorrow.

personally i think the new tab page is sweeeet
also i advise that everyone should have the extension adblock plus
this thing is great for all sites especially youtube

Yeah, I really like the new tab page. It's a great first step at creating a "web desktop."

New OP is live. Hope people find it more useful than the previous OP.
Awesome OP, congrats Andrex.
The one thing I'd love Chrome to do is hide the Favicon in the Bookmarks Bar or auto-hide the bookmarks bar, the only thing I miss from Firefox.

It's the OP of this thread

I'm confused...

So we're IN the new OP already ? Is this Inception?

Oh, I get it. When someone says "New OP" I read it as "New OT". I thought we was getting a new thread to start with. My bad! Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.

:p

It's almost like a new OT, except with 2800 posts right out of the gate.

New title and new OP... new!! :p

Wonder when we'll hit 20k and be forced to make a new OT... probably not a while. Which is what I had in mind making the new OP, I expect it to last a while (whereas the original one was JUST for Chrome 6, which obviously wasn't sustainable.)

Glad we got rid of the version number seeing as it made no sense when any Chrome user can be using one of 3 different numbers at any one time.

So why isn't the new download UI not working? If I download something something pops up or anything.

I'm using the beta btw.
Same with the stable version (under about:flags), the download just starts in the background, no popup, no notification, nothing.

Edit: Hey, I'm a member :D

Stump axed the version number in the title a while ago, actually. I just wanted the subtitle dropped for simplicity's sake.

That reminds me, does anyone know the full history of titles this thread has had? It's had quite a few.

listen to the mad man
I have to say I still don't get apps.

I mean, I've read what Google have written about them and I use Chrome and I'm openminded and I was pretty interested in the concept of the web app store, but I still haven't found a use for them.

I have a smartphone, I do web development, I'm a big HTML5 fan, I'm a big rich content fan, I'm currently arguing in the Digital vs. Paper Books threads so I'm not a luddite. I'm not an idiot. So I would guess that I have the faculties necessary such that I should get it.

Can someone point me to a really great web app, bundled or hosted or whatever, to enlighten me?

Google Chrome 6 |OT| A New Coat of Paint
Google Chrome 6/7 |OT| A New Coat of Paint
Google Chrome 8 |OT|
Google Chrome 8 |OT| Web app store launched!
Google Chrome 9/10 |OT| New features every 6 weeks!
Google Chrome 10/11 |OT| New features every 6 weeks!

Not sure about pre-6 threads, they'd be different threads. I did every title change, no other mods have touched the thread.

The great majority of apps are just shortcuts to websites. I was expecting great offline support, that I'd be able to use web apps instead of Office, Photoshop, and more complex programs. I guess the technology isn't ripe enough, so things like this aren't yet possible. The only web app I can find a true meaning for is offline Gmail, and even that has it's limitations.

TweetDeck would probably be the first thing I'd point you to. Could probably come up with more if given the time.

Rereading the first few pages of that thread, it's amazing the tepid response Chrome got at first and how little people believed in it. I wasn't any different, waited about a year after it was released before I switched (actually, I think it was shortly after the extensions site went live.) Really the big issue for me was it's UI, seemed so cartoony and unprofessional to me (especially coming from Opera.) Thankfully Chrome 6 made the UI awesome.

Same here, it never has worked since they put it in flags.

I'm not sure what happened, but Youtube videos no longer play in Chrome... unless they're embedded on another site. No picture, no sound -- not even a black rectangle where the video is supposed to be. I disabled all of my extensions and still nothing. Youtube works fine in IE so it must be a Chrome thing.

Has anyone here come across this problem and managed to fix it?

The fact that a Google site (Youtube) doesn't work in a Google browser seems like a fundamentally strange problem. Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing? That's really my only advice.

Yes, I did. Something else I just discovered is that videos also play if they're embedded in a channel. It's just the page for the video itself that's borked. I don't even...

Get this. Videos work when I use an incognito window. So whatever's busted is disabled in porn mode.

Wat.

UPDATE: I got videos to play again. I went to Wrench -> Tools -> Clear browsing data... and deleted my download history, cache, and cookies. I'm unsure which fixed my issues, but I'm thinking cache or cookies.

extensions are disabled (by default, at least) in incognito mode which leads me to believe your issue is probably related to an extension. try disabling some/all until you find it?

edit: buuuh, just saw an older post of yours saying you've already tried that... no idea then, sorry!

They don't really exist and I think much of this is due to business and perception. Everyone is on the native apps bandwagon. They see these success stories from iOS and give it a go. If they're open souce they're on Android. If you proposed an app for a business most won't give you the time of day if you said it was done in browser. It's like getting HTML5 approved for anything, you can't because everyone outside the web team is running on the infrastructure approved IE7. Businesses also hate Chrome (and now FF) because they have little control over updates and they release too fast. There's also DRM concerns. Javascript is designed to be 100% open, the most you can do is minify it (I think chrome has a couple options with NaCl but those are still really early and browser specific). So people can cheat and pirate with incredible ease because it's built into the system and that of course can make business harder.

There are so many cool things you could do with the newer HTML APIs and I've seen pretty much jack aside from some Google experimental music videos.

I also think javascript stands in the way of traditional C++/Java/C# programmers. It's a completely different skillset from OO programming.

Wait!

On the latest Chrome Beta for Mac, did they finally fix the issue of Chrome forcing the use of the dedicated GPU?!?!

And my Flash Processor usage is now in line with Safari!

Can somebody verify/confirm this?

Edit: Canvas hardware acceleration seems to not also be working. Hm.

Are there good extensions to resolve the following issues I have with Chrome? (I can't find any on the Chrome Store.)

-tagging bookmarks
-auto-positioning/resizing for non-maximized Chrome windows
-a back button with a drop-down list, a la Opera or Firefox
-an awesome/omni-bar more like Opera's

I'm guessing the latter two can't actually be implemented as extensions. Chrome is pretty much my only browser, but these are some things I'd like to see. I wish it offered the same customization options that Opera does.

Is there a reading list equivalent for Chrome? I like to read things later but this means too many tabs left open

I use ReadItLater and install the Chrome "Postponer" extensions for saving to and reading from my list. It works perfectly. I just wish there weren't so many of these reading lists because none of them work with any other one. There's dozens of them. ReadItLater works fine enough for me. I click the Save button in the location bar and close the tab to free up some clutter. It'll be there until I get around to cleaning out my list. Very convenient. Plus I have an app for my iPad and my Android and can just log into the site to read them too.

I'm sure there are extensions for other sites like InstaPaper. There's also "Too Many Tabs" which doesn't save the URL on a site, it just holds a tab for later. It's basically the same thing without the convenience of having the links accessible from anywhere.

I just wanted to show off my personal customized New Tab Page.
ibudZqea0qggdH.PNG

It's all HTML5, JavaScript and CSS. The calendar is generated on the fly. If you hover over it, it shows the days before and after. The clock is a bunch of DIV's with backgrounds rotated to the correct angles. The weather is my latest addition and is grabbed from a Google Gadget XML file. (The same one the iGoogle page uses) The links on the right are generated from a nested tree of JavaScript variables and loads instantly. (The reason I stopped using third party tab pages like Speed Dial 2 is because there was an untollerable delay between opening the tab and the links loading into the grid. I couldn't stand not having them instantly due to it having to read from the database and parse the data.) The FavIcons are retrieved from Google's FavIcon server. Wish it would work consistently. Not all favicons load for some reason. The image is just a nice wallpaper I found on DeviantArt on a users page who found it on the internet. So, no one knows the original source. It's beautiful. I have it on my iPad too.

HOW!?

We wants it!

edit: Also very good work on that speed dial of yours. I suppose that you all glued it together - as you wrote using "pieces" from different sites.
I bow down to your html knowings.
