The iPad is a question no one asked. It's selling.

How can you even compare the two? There are already a lot of devices that already do what Google TV is said to do... including this little thing called a PC.

Nope it's an app that streams music from your comp = cell.

Yeah but all Google is doing is allowing you to search for shit out in the 'wild'. There is no telling if the providers you are hooking up to for streaming are reliable or not. Is it in HD? Is it the entire show?

Like I said before, I was hoping it would be more like a netflix style service... this just seems like it's been done before. I can already search for Amazon, Netflix, ABC, CBS, etc shows on my Bravia TV.
Is it in the wild? It seemed that the default search engine was closed to a handful of sources (broadcast and then broadcast sites/Hulu/Netflix/YouTube/Amazon.

I don't think they're claiming to be a novel idea.

1. Google sees TV viewers (e.g. everybody) as a whole bunch of eyeballs.
2. Networks see Google demographics data and targeted ads as incredibly useful.
3. Google essentially creates a streamlined HTPC box that is highly visible because it's from Google and thus has cachet with vendors, networks, web companies, and users.
4. PROFIT

And again, let's not undersell that HTPCs are still somewhat foreign to a lot of people, which is why TVs have been including their own interfaces. If TVs decide to ditch their own software and just license GoogleTV (presumably for free), that will be huge for this venture.

The android phone pairing is nice, but the rest of the setup just seems so inelegant and lacks streamlining where it needs to be (IR blasting, REALLY?)

True, but it's selling because the iPhone was the assisted answer, the iPad was the extention of that

But anyways, let's not debate it here...

Edit* ummm Brittany?

I definitely see the difference and I'm not saying that Google TV is something amazingly new, but it can serve a variety of purposes for people, from a cheaper solution for a web browser in a bedroom or family room instead of buying a computer, to a solid way for non-techies to stream videos from providers like Hulu. If anyone can make this take off, it's Google, so it'll be a fun experiment to watch if nothing else.

yay GTV demo is over!

edit: nvm :( This reminds me of Sony e3 conference when they focused on things that either weren't that exciting or just dragged on past the point of interest.

Haha, some of these features seem like over-kill. Included just because they can.
Using a smartphone is more intuitive than using a keyboard and mouse in this case, though.

Can't wait for 2015 when we just flick a video from a phone to the TV wirelessly.

COME ON Suprise HTC Hero 2.2 Update!!

I'd kill for that but can't see the Hero getting past 2.1, plus it's taken them this long to even start to roll it out (GSM Hero is still waiting) it doesn't even bare thinking how long it'd take to get 2.2 out.

the one thing I will love about this is if Twit.tv and Rev3 jump board on this! Would be awesome to tell my GTV box from my phone to queue up the lastest show
