This. Fucking this.

Bought a Motorola Cliq and I'm stuck with 1.5...apparently we're getting 2.1 soon, but I guess it's going to be the last -and only- Android update.

Basically, my phone OS was already obsolete by the time it was out.

yeah i have the dext, they are updating the cliq but have said nothing about the dext even though its the same phone. and even if they do you still have to wait on the phone operator.

its ridiculous that they can't just make the phone company stuff (to do with the 3g connection or something..) independent of the OS.

Okay how will google TV work when almost everyone in the family have their cellphones on?
The way most people's home theater setups that use portable wireless keyboards and mice do, I would imagine.

Whoa, this could be a whole new platform war for your TV. Do people want a OS on their TV, though, besides their DVR/box?

This is what Microsoft wanted way back in the day with web TV then the (Direct)XBox. Considering their media ventures in the past couple years, it stands to reason that the next XBox will be even more of a media box than ever before. Sony can't really compete on this front because they don't have the web infrastructure and, well, money that Google and Microsoft can bring. Same could be said with the Apple TV for not going too far in either direction (ambition/infrastructure and openness).

All we've seen in this space is minor stabs and quick failures. Google sees a lot of money in this, though.

Sony are one of Google's main partners in the Google TV program.

They're not doing anything with Google TV that's blowing my skirts up

So far it looks like an answer to a question no one has been asking :(

I'd honestly leave my computer and TV seperately

Where can I watch this from scratch though?

Really happy Google TV is also a box for current TVs. That makes it more ideal than me buying a new TV, and will help it take off.

I want, so bad.

It lets you browse from a tv to show off videos and sites, or simply search for tv shows and watch them on your tv screen instead of having to sit at your desktop or watch on a laptop.

The web on tv, and tv back on tv instead of on the computer. That's pretty awesome. I don't like having to watch a show on Hulu on my laptop or in my computer chair, and GoogleTV fixes that.

I disagree that it's a question no one is asking, I just don't think they're offering an answer that's any better than other attempts.

Actually I own a Dext. Cliq/Dext are exactly the same phone, but named differently for marketing reasons.

The best you can do right now is rooting your Cliq and flash the Dext firmware. Also, by doing this you can make sure you'll get 2.1 whether your operator pushes the update or not.

You're confusing what I say. Presumably Sony, Samsung, LG, etc. are all players in this market as hardware -> read: TVs and set top boxes.

I'm just saying that of the companies that attempted to be your media hub, Sony and Apple aren't able to be independent players because they don't have the infrastructure, whereas Microsoft (maybe Xfinity?) is.

Microsoft has talked about being in this space for over a decade now. The XBox was planned to be the PC in your living room, so we can reasonably guess that Microsoft will expand media features of the next XBox significantly.

Anyways IRT GoogleTV, this looks like a closed HTPC with a slick interface. Do want.

Admittedly I've only tuned in about 10 mins ago, so far it seems that way..maybe I was missing the beginning

This. I'm unable to stream the conference but I did see the video on Google.com/tv. How is this any different than just hooking your PC to your main TV? I'd rather it be more like Netflix (via 360) where it's all under one reliable umbrella.

So is Google TV a set top box or an overlay of existing DVR UIs?

GTV while awesome is getting boring. Are they going to go through every feature?

9:47AM Just so we're clear: we've spent the last 15 minutes going through an internet search bar tied to DVR, and at least 10 minutes of that was just a crowd of thousands together watching daytime television

That guy at Engadget really doesn't sound like he's enjoying it! :lol

So if I buy a Droid Incredible today, will it be able to update to this 2.2?

There is so much going on I can't keep up, a Google media player to compete with iTunes? Google TV? Is that for your PC? Will it cost? AHHHHH

It's better because it's a mass-market device.

You and I are able to make and manage HTPCs. Our parents will be able to navigate this GoogleTV thing with the ease of a DVR box.

No you won't. Nexus 1 will be the first 2.2 phone, followed by possibly Droid. I expect HTC releasing it about 3-5 months after its official release.

I'm clear what it does, but the point in hand was who is this exactly for?

Most people who want to do this already have done it via a media centre/PS3/whatever connected to the TV..

Yeah OK it's all in one box, but I don't think it's been that important or needy for anyone to want this current implementation

I even disagree with that. I think the beauty in this is the pure simplicity. It really isn't anything that mindblowing or ultra complex. I think that is a really good thing. You can connect this device and pretty much never look back for TV/casual internet browsing content. Everything is converged pretty seamlessly between the web, tv, and DVR.

Searching for information during commericals, setting tasks for the DVR, purchasing content, movies, etc. That seems like a good bridge between the web and TV. He brought up a good point about not reinventing the wheel at the beginning of this section of the keynote.

Edit: And my comment is now out of date lol. But even on the business side of things, I'm not sure something like this upsets cable/satellite providers that much because the aim isn't to completely replace them, but to give extra enhancements on the service already avaliable presently. I know they are scum, but it doesn't hurt to play nice with them... they may actually try to make this thing work better too.

is there more after this or is it just google tv all the way down now?

its not really that exciting, i was expecting something more like netflix, this is just plugging a small pc into you tv.

I'm not so sure about that when it comes to the web navigation that clearly still relies on cursor/kb movement.

Please help me with my bad english
So basically, Google TV is a computer connected to a TV...

Really? That changes everything :O

Well, I'm not totally convinced by Google TV. Kinda feel like when Apple unveiled the iPad. It's right between computers and smartphones but that doesn't nearly enrich my life as one of those devices. To me it's basically Boxee with a working browser. Great, but where's the innovation I was looking for?

I think the whole of this thing is that its built into the TV itself and controls integrated into TV remote.

Yeah but all Google is doing is allowing you to search for shit out in the 'wild'. There is no telling if the providers you are hooking up to for streaming are reliable or not. Is it in HD? Is it the entire show?

Like I said before, I was hoping it would be more like a netflix style service... this just seems like it's been done before. I can already search for Amazon, Netflix, ABC, CBS, etc shows on my Bravia TV.

There are a ton of questions about this..... it does seem to just be integrating the web on the tv but not doing anything that much better (other than the pip view).

They did just answer one of the questions about how it works.... it a separate box that connects to your existing box.

Was really hoping it was going to be something more than what they showed.

For sure. They say they're working on input interface, but we'll see.

I bet we'll be able to use a smartphone as the controller.

It depends whether your carrier and phone manufacturer wants to update your firmware. Apparently, Google is working to address this kind of problems, but we'll see about that.

The iPad is a question no one asked. It's selling.

There's been no announcement, but 99% yes. It's an AAA phone, and Verizon takes Android pretty seriously. This update problem is more of an issue for lower budget phones, like the Cliq Dext.
