Google Pixel 2 - answers are coming Oct 4th

Bboyaj still around. He called the no headphone jack thing after Apple did it. Wireless will win in due time.

the future of audio on phones isn't wireless (at least not with bluetooth because bluetooth is utter garbage quality wise--interesting how all these anti-headphone jack stans always seem to ignore that) but dongles.

the only reason i want these phones are for the ai black magic fuckery google does with their cameras. too bad they hate scandinavia so i guess i'm sitting this one out too.

The wireless ear buds are very cool. I wish the pixel had a longer battery life for such a premium device. Would not consider the Pixel Book until someone shares a comfortable experience installing and running linux (Ubuntu) on this.

Guess I'm just going to keep rocking my S6 for now. Love the look of the S8 but I'm really curious about this supposed folding phone Samsung is coming out with next year.

Also Google are pretty much small fry in the phone hardware market anyway, and will continue to be if this is their approach.

The big android players still have stuff like headphone jacks.

I thought we understood that most people aren’t audiophiles? That war was lost in the old napster days.

Just get the S8+ or LG v30.

The last true android flagships that has android's ethos of giving the user options.

It's refreshing to see people NOT mindlessly defending this company like they do with Apple. Was mildly interested before the reveal but the lack of the headphone jack and only a single camera is a deal breaker. Going with the V30.

Oof. So my Nexus 6P's battery is shot after just under two years, which makes me less than optimistic about buying a fancy new phone from Google.

Have you contacted Google support about your battery issues? They have been doing lots of device replacements for that issue even if you're out of warranty.

What the hell is the point of dropping the headphone jacks again?

I don't understand these recent decisions by phone makers.

I don't buy it being a "size" thing. Phones have been incredibly-thin for a while now. Almost too thin, I'd argue (I always need a case to make the phone a little bigger and easier to hold in my hand.

Most folks, myself included, buy Google phones for the pure Android experience and guaranteed OTA OS updates. When the 6P and 5X launched it became clear that Google wanted out of the budget unlocked phone market and into the mainstream flagship. You are now paying for a premium phone that ties beautifully into Google's growing ecosystem. There is no one "killer app," nor has there ever been with any phone.

I kinda get that. I bought the Nexus 4, 5, 5x, 6, and 6p for that exact reason - through the steady price increases. But at some point, I have to start asking myself if quick updates are worth the extra $300. It might be cheaper to upgrade from used Samsung flagship to used Samsung flagship every year just to get the latest OS.

People still expect removable battery in 2017?

You were setting yourselves up for disappointment right from the start.

Wasn't expecting it, no. But I listed it because it might have been a differentiating feature which possibly maybe have justified the insane price.

My first gen Pixel XL is arriving this week (got it for free because my 6P battery was awful). Before that I rocked a 5. Right now I'm on an unlocked S8 and while I love it, small QoL things like hitting the Bixby button is a PITA. I may end up giving it to my mom or something and using last year's XL as my daily driver. I could also sell it and make a nice buck since it's unlocked, but I haven't decided yet.

they realized they can make more money by selling people overpriced dongles.

I'm gonna chuckle when a teardown reveals the stupid squeeze thing is what's taking up space to get rid of the headphone jack.

there's a difference between "cares somewhat about sound quality" and "audiophile"

don't conflate the two.

i think that's what she means. most people use the buds that came with their phone and the built in speakers on their tv. people don't care.

That doesn't even work.

If Samsung could update a bit quicker, or LG wasn't stuck trying to be Samsung of 2012 there would be better options.

yea it is on both. I'm hoping they do something like double squeeze to activate camera so it isn't limited to google assistant.

On the U11 you can do short squeeze for cam and long for assistant, or vice verse (or any other app launch)

in app squeezes can also do various things

Oreo supports LDAC and AptX HD, 24bit codecs. My MDR-1000X receives up to 900kbps from an Oreo Android device, I guarantee I have better audio quality on my headset than 95% of people's wired sets.

Audio quality over BT is not really an issue unless you cheap out on the headset, and if you do you probably don't really care that much about the quality to begin with and are fine with regular 16bit AptX.

I'm about to switch to either the V30 or Pixel XL 2, from an iPhone 6. And I'm seriously lost.

I have this Xperia Tablet Z that I flashed CM/LineageOS on, after tons of research and fiddling around. Never used the Sony skin because it was already outdated when I bought it.

Can I expect this with the V30 as well? For some reason I feel like instant original stock Android updates might be more valuable than the V30 hardware features?

I need help :(

Why didn't you take advantage of the 6P RMA? I don't think Google's offering Pixels anymore, but you might be able to get a new 6P. Check the 6P thread here and on Reddit.

I'm actually just looking at some wireless ones like those, the Sennie Momentums and the Bose QC 35. They all seem to use BT 4 or 4.1, is no one on 5 yet? BTW I'm leaning towards the Momentum 2.0 but they are nooooot cheap. Damn.

No headphone port
No wireless charging
Fake dual lens camera that makes your face look like a 3d projected building in Google Maps (slight exaggeration but there's somthing really off with that Marques selfie)
Worse bezel to screen ratio than the iPhone X, S8, S8+, Note, V30, Xaomi Mi Mix 2
No expandable storage
No removable battery

$849/$949.

So what exactly is selling this phone? The ability to use Google Fi + quick os updates?

3 years of updates and FI are worth it. Even more if you travel. Those sweet roaming prices are aces. That has more value than anything else. Additionally great customer service and warranty.. All that is worth way more than you give it credit.

I do think the LG V30 is more appealing than this.
Out of all the "bezel-less" phones released this year, Pixel 2 XL by a pretty good margin has the biggest bezels (because of the front speakers), I understand that it's a design choice, but the front of the phone simply does not look very good. The 76% screen to body ratio is not really impressive and the bezel on the ordinary Pixel 2 is just ugly....
I would get the Pixel 2 XL for its camera, but the price is unjustifiably expensive

I have to echo most of the sentiments regarding the headphone jack, no headphone jack automatically disqualifies the phone in my books.

Struggling so hard to decide between iPhone X or Pixel 2/XL.
On one hand, I'm deep into the Apple ecosystem as it is, I own an Apple Watch 2, Wireless Ear Pods etc. (I just sold my 7Plus so I might sell the rest and get out of the eco system).

I think I hate the size of the XL and Plus sized phones, but man that Pixel 2 is so ugly.
God damnit

EDIT: Maybe I'll just get a OnePlus 5.

That's crazy. Once again a Google phone that is already beat before it's even released. I'd be happy with this phone if it weren't priced like a flagship phone but Samsung has them beat already in every way at that price point.

You will be fine with older BT on the headphones, mine last like 22 hours on a charge and the 1000XM2’s are supposed to last even longer. The Momentum’s are nice, but older than the Sony’s and the Bose’s and have far worse NC.

The Sony’s and QC35 are pretty much on par with noise cancelling, though the 1000X have some nifty extra features to let through voice or ambient noises. It is also pretty much universally accepted the 1000X has better sound quality due to the built in upscaler and LDAC. The new version has an equalizer through a phone app as well, wish I had that.

Gotta admit, I'm a bit disappointed in the design. The side bezels look big, and the top and bottom are larger than most "bezelless" phones are. The back camera has a bump and it doesn't feel close enough to the left edge not the center. It's in an awkward in-between spot.

I don't know. I mean, the actual Android experience should be second-to-none. But it's definitely the ugliest bezelless phone I've seen. It honestly feels like it should be more like $499. They're pricing this in a high-end market where its looks and features don't fit in at.

thety're selling you the opportunity to beta test their software.

Just got home. Very excited for a nicer Google Home speaker. I still wish Google would just buy Sonos....

Google Home Max went on sale? Crap. On the waitlist now! :(

I can't find any info if the xl2 has a notification led. Feels bad.

What was very odd was that the notification led wasn't mentioned once for the Pixel, and then going through settings I saw a setting for it and was surprised by it. Also it was multicolored depending on the type of notification (blue for Textra, yellow for Snapchat, etc).

Just really weird how it was never mentioned
