Google reveals the coolest video games, video game consoles among US teens 13-17

Surprised at LoZ being popular with "Gen Z" (is that what were calling them?)

I honestly don't imagine kids having grown highly impacted by Twilight Princess. Not that memorable of a game, compared to ALttP, OoT or likely now BotW.

In any case, whether it's because of Breath of the Wild, or before Breath of the Wild, kids considering TLoZ cool at this time it's really good news for... Breath of the Wild. And Nintendo. Good timing to keep that ball rolling.

No Nintendo in brands?

#RIP

Keep in mind that Gen Z is the generation that was born in the mid-90s. They wouldn't know a world where Nintendo dominated the industry. As far as they're concerned Sony is the de-facto videogame maker and Nintendo is the weird "kiddy" brand that makes those "rated E" games.

What's worng with Zelda again? Zelda is awesome so it makes sense it's on the list. People can like Zelda.

Interesting that Xbox beat out PlayStation... Sales don't reflect this. Though I suppose that is because millennials have the buying power.

More like a lot of PS4 owners were Xbox 360 owners last gen. If CoD and Minecraft are some of the most popular franchises, just prior to maybe 3 years ago, CoD was marketed with Xbox and had double the sales in NA and we all know about Minecraft and how it routinely was top 10 NPD for so long on 360.

If you think about in a console fanboy sense, you may be upset but due to the sheer popularity of the Xbox 360 which outsold the Wii and PS3 in NA, Xbox became a big brand. It became a sort of 'Game Boy' or 'Nintendo' in that even people like President Obama would say kids are playing their 'Xbox' etc. After this gen though, things could change again.

Outside of the videogame section, this is a very well designed print piece.

And the market research is interesting. Poor quicksilver. I'd imagine ~16 years ago, when I was would be a prime age for this study, quicksilver would have been highly recognized and highly thought of as cool.

Quicksilver was seen as a premium brand. Then they started selling it in Wal-Mart and Target. Nothing against those places, but that's what happened.

It's people born since around 1996 or 1997 depending on who you ask.

Millennials (originally Generation Y) are more people born 1980 through 1995 or 1996.

Generation X is more 1965-1979-ish.

What the hell is the next generation gonna be called if we already used Z? Are we going back around to A? Maybe going on to 1? We need top minds on this.

Nintendo can't beat fucking Doritos on the list of top brands and folks think that the Switch is going to be a repeat of the Wii's success? C'mon.
Apple sells in a year more than twice as many iPhones as the highly successful Wii sold in its entire lifetime, at double the ASP.

Still doesn't beat Oreo.

Yeah, apples to oranges but that correlation doesn't make any sense.

I suspect they're just going to rename Generation Z the same way they renamed Generation Y eventually, but yes, I'm not sure what the placeholder will be for the next generation.

A for Generation Apocalypse :P

As a father of a 13 year old and 15 year old, this list is so wrong. Minecraft?? They think Minecraft is a baby game and wouldn't be caught dead playing it. And Xbox?? They both have PS4's and so do all of their friends.

What's cool is PS4, Destiny, and sports games.

Marketing and merchandising push for Zelda has been running at full throttle since the 25th Anniversary in 2011. From the launch of OOT3D till now, they've kept the franchise in the news with three Symphony tours, almost yearly game releases (4 3D and HD remakes/ports, ALBW, BOTW, TFH), Netflix show talk, BOTW's entire dragged-out dev cycle, not to mention Hyrule Warriors and all that it entails ITO expanding the universe and audience.

Think about it - Wind Waker is more popular and revered these days among the general gaming community than it ever was in the 00s. Zelda music in general is more of a thing among youth now than it was in the 90s.

Now BOTW release and reception tops it all off.

Man I just don't understand how a generation that is that well informed could think xbox was a cooler brand than playstation? It does not make any sense. I don't trust this data. Its just objectively wrong...

I'm an adult with both consoles and I still think Xbox is cooler. Subjectivity.

Uhhh why are all the choices generic brands except COD:Black Ops and CS:go? Shouldn't it just be Call of Duty and Counterstrike?

Makes me wonder if they messed up some choices... Like instead of just "mario" they put "new super mario bros" or something subset.

My 15 year brother and his friends all have Xbox, and play a ton of Smite, Ark, Minecraft and Madden/NBA when those sports seasons are on

Zelda and Pokemon. Excellent. I've always had the impression that Nintendo just didn't resonate with Gen Z. Obviously they're not going to dominate like before, but they're in good, sustainable shape if they can continue carving out little fiefdoms of mindshare.

Does Nintendo resonate, or do those specific franchises resonate?

On contrary anecdotal evidence, my 13 year old nephew is currently selling his PS4 in favor of an Xbox One S because he digs MS games more.

His mom keeps telling him to sell it for the price they bought it tho ($300) so i'm not sure that's happening.

Chrome is in a 10 ten coolest brands lost? Really? Seems like this list is a bit of a scam. I don't see teens ranking a web browser as a top brand.

Right, it's an important distinction, but I thought Nintendo products as a whole fell off a cliff a few years back. Pokemon fans, for example, were getting older and older. It's important to make sure there are new fans.

I was born in 97. Am I a millennial or part of gen Z?

Either way, I can't say I relate to much of this apart from thinking Zelda is great, probably why I ended up on Gaf tbh haha.

Generations are an inexact science, and no sociologist would have a hard-and-fast rule about breaking it down by year. For instance, someone born in 1979 but born in an urban, fast-developing community may have more in common with millennials, yet someone born in 1982 in a rural area may have more in common with GenX. Other factors contribute as well, like, if you have older siblings or relatives who you are close with, you may identify more with their generation, and not a younger generation.

It's not like being born in January 1998, suddenly there is a seismic shift in your temperament, opportunities, outlook, and perspective, versus someone born a month earlier in December 1997. It's a sliding scale. I'm a millennial, born in 1984, and there are times I identify with millennials and times where I don't, although I nearly always despise older generations casting some negative reflection on millennials -- drives me fucking crazy. That said, I have a lot more in common (temperament, working perspective, social perspective, etc) with my older siblings, born in 1980 and 1978 (arguably Gen X) than I do with you, born in 1997.

I think it's fair to assume that teens will watch shows/movies that is supposedly for an older audience. I mean, think of all the R rated movies you saw from when you were 12-17, despite those technically not being for you.
That's not what i am talking about. Kids today only watch reality crap, that isn't available on netflix.
