Google reveals the coolest video games, video game consoles among US teens 13-17

Can I just say how frustrating it is to me that Millennials are the scapegoat generation? We're treated like a growing pain. It's a bit humiliating... but honestly I'm proud of my generation and our values. I said that once on my Facebook page and people were appalled that I'd be proud.

Too many negative headlines have demonized us.

Anyway, Gen Zers sound great. besides the more conservative leanings bit. I always imagined the progressive movement solidifying and becoming the new norm. Sounds like I just didn't completely grasp how things change! Hope Gen Zers don't get stuck with the bad rap like their slightly older, slightly less social media connected older siblings.

Edit: I guess I do understand that we're an inbetween generation. Stuck between analog and digital. But the bad press bums me out hard. I suppose if that's my biggest gripe then I have it pretty good.

Eh...I read the methods a couple time and it sounds solid. I wish I could see the survey itself though. I wonder if some of these brands were included as options where as other ones were not, or if questions were more open ended.

The whole thing reads like

They didn't survey enough people...I hate it when about 800-1200 people is supposed to represent a demographic...and is this world-wide, nation-wide?
This isn't accurate enough for me... It's kinda lazy.

As far as accurate statistics go, 400 is considered the minimum for an acceptable poll. Regardless of how many more people you survey it's very to see differences change by more than 2 or 3%. However for that 400 to work, you have to have a truly random selection. The methodology they used for polling seemed very vague, and as it seems to be entirely Internet based so just by that the results are likely questionable.

Anyway just to sum up, the serving size is not bad. The methodology on the other hand probably is.

When I was 13 (11 years ago), I was an Xbox 360 pleb and loved that machine due to the multiplayer games (Halo, Gears, and non exclusives COD and Battlefield).

Glad the tradition is still going on with Generation Z.

Playstation is for old people who like story telling.

What the Me generation thinks is cool: gobbling up every remaining resource on the planet and outliving their children.

or the best ever

I feel one of the undersold aspects of Microsoft's success is how many younger children they managed to pick up starting around the time of the Kinect, and shortly afterwards Minecraft, in the U.S. and the U.K.

In the opposite site, is interesting to see the lack of notoriety of the Nintendo brand. Even with Pokemon and the success of the DS.

I unironically love this post. It makes a lot of sense though. I play games in a solitary fashion. Loving it as interactive story telling. I played some MP stuff like Halo but fell off, kept playing games the way I did as a kid.

Really puts things in perspective for me! But I'm still young and hip, okay? We must all acknowledge this.

really? i find our generation sucks both in values and accomplishments

Facebook, Snapchat, Social Media, AmateurPorn and YouTube Stars
the stuff Gen Z likes was made by us. but beside that?

but this gets political now...

lolol I don't care if this sarcasm, it's good.

If you actually read the PDF they specifically say this survey is of 13 to 17 year olds.

The generations are not exact science take this article for instance, it basically cut the old end of Gen Z and called them milennials.
I did, it's very flawed. They Say Gen Z but they're specifically talking about a very limited range within it.
all of this makes me cringe... The generalization of age groups, the graphics layout, the BS terms, the questionable data suggestions...

Yeah man...if I was a part of the "worst period generation period ever period" I'd be frustrated too!

Also in this thread we learn that teenagers are indeed teenagers. Thankfully they all have parents to guide them in their purchasing decisions and consumption of media.

Progressive, empathetic, and recently engaged. But maybe I'm seeing a narrow sliver of the demographic and generalizing. I'm not sure! I just hate that I'm supposed to feel ashamed according to everything I read.

But I'm probably derailing!

I just started reading articles on Gen Z and they were all being compared favorably to Millennials and my blood boiled.

Wait I'm Gen Z?! I thought I was a millennial this whole time but supposedly mid 90s is Z.
This list isn't me pls gaf dun judge :/

This generalization is weak and inaccurate. I'm gen X, but wise enough to know that core beliefs transcend age groups.

so the entire premise of generalizing behaviour and preferences across different generations is bullshit? nah, that couldn't possibly be the case

"relies on brands to build their identity" has got to be the scariest thing I've heard today

says the guy with a candy brand marketing hashtag for a tag

Only important if you are 30+
and if you think your kids are gonna love it, think again daddy-o, the very fact that you like it means that your kids will eventually hate it

This is so off base.

GAF stop commenting on what kids like if you don't have kids or don't work with them.

These generational generalizations are always really dumb. So much misunderstanding of people it's ridiculous. Over the years so many marketers giving talks about how to reach millennials always saying things like "millennials love Facebook, millennials love emojis, millennials love Spachat, Instagram." It's not the brand that's cared about, it's the utility and how ubiquitous those applications became but then we get a ton of marketing and old people doing "fellow kids" things like, describe this brand with your favorite emoji or spamming social media and then when there market research says they're not reaching the millennials age group, they say things like millennials are cheap, millennials are narcissists, millennials don't understand the value of things.

Looking at that 10 coolest brands and I'm sure they're determining coolness in a way that does not mean the same type of coolness socially. Maybe in elementary kids will get cool points for PlayStation vs Xbox but Netflix, Youtube, and Google. Those are the standard services for their market segment. They're used for their utility and ubiquitous not because of their coolness. Same with Faceook. I've never met a millennial bragging about using Facebook. Its the norm. Most just use it for Facebook Messenger to my experience. You could premiere a new product with all 10 of those things plastered around and people wouldn't get all aspirational over how cool it must be to hang with such cool brands.
