Google reveals the coolest video games, video game consoles among US teens 13-17

Chrome is in a 10 ten coolest brands lost? Really? Seems like this list is a bit of a scam. I don't see teens ranking a web browser as a top brand.

Well, it's a research from Google after all :)

WE COMMISSIONED 3 RESEARCH STUDIES IN THE UNITED STATES
TO GATHER THE DATA FOR THIS MAGAZINE.

YouGov administered a study using it’s web-based PollingPoint panel to a nationally
representative sample of 400 teens ages 13 to 17 and 800 millennials
ages 18-25
from May 25 to May 31, 2016. This primarily quantitative data was
used for most of our brand insights and comparisons between teens
and millennials.

YouGov administered a second study using the same web-based PollingPoint
panel to a nationally representative sample of 1100 teens ages 13 to 17 from
June 30, to July 11, 2016. This survey provided more detailed information around
teens attitudes towards the specific brands we discussed in this magazine.

Gutcheck administered a qualitative survey via an online Instant Research
Group (IRG) where 67 teens ages 13 to 17 answered open-ended questions and
follow-ups posted by a trained moderator from June 27 to July 1, 2016. This
research provided many of the insights for the activities teens think are cool and
most of the teen quotations used throughout the publication.

As a father of a 13 year old and 15 year old, this list is so wrong. Minecraft?? They think Minecraft is a baby game and wouldn't be caught dead playing it. And Xbox?? They both have PS4's and so do all of their friends.

What's cool is PS4, Destiny, and sports games.

Don't mean to insult but your post reads like one of them posing as the dad.

Just some anecdotal evidence Xbox is a minecraft machine for all my cousins. I use the Xbox too but every time I visit family the kids are usually playing minecraft or call of duty on the Xbox. I live in Canada so obviously this would vary in Europe where the Sony brand is supreme.

all of this makes me cringe... The generalization of age groups, the graphics layout, the BS terms, the questionable data suggestions...

It looks like there's still a problem reaching outside of the existing demographic

considering how their gaming taste is clearly superior, looks like the hate on neogaf towards millennials was premature

is it time to start hating on gen z instead? those damn kids should get off my lawn anyway

The 360 was consistently popular last gen so that makes sense. In a few years it'll be PlayStation again because of Sony's current domination.
Well this is a US based thing where PS isn't really dominating like ok the rest of the world, so I doubt it will change that much.

I think that chart obscures the issue a bit though, because the percentages on the side bar suggest they had to pick what they thought was the #1 coolest thing in existence.

The highest percentage for any item is 15%, so any other interpretation would suggest that 85% of teens think literally everything is uncool.

If you would rank video games as #3 after clothes and music, you would not be counted.

Only important if you are 30+
and if you think your kids are gonna love it, think again daddy-o, the very fact that you like it means that your kids will eventually hate it

This means that, if you want your kids to play Nintendo games, pretend they're vile and disgusting so the kids can play them out of rebellion. Take notes, ParentGAF.

I'm just glad I know what everything on that list is. As a Gen X'er I'm I feel like I'm starting to find so much of pop culture to be completely foreign and unfamiliar.

Does Nintendo resonate, or do those specific franchises resonate?
Pretty much. I'd say Pokémon as a brand is bigger than Nintendo in a sense. My. Either begrudgingly bought a 3ds just to play Pokémon after the Go stuff started. And he doesn't really care about any of their other franchises

What? Apple is top right, both highly aware and highly perceived as cool. Page 9:

Most surprising thing out of this for me is that Vice doesn't connect with teens, though it connects highly with millennials. Obviously their content skews older, but seems like there's always some of that residual melt-water. I'd imagine that among milennials, vice would have a high 'cool' factor and be in the low-middle for awareness.

Also for the Xbox/Playstation distinction, looking at the plot, they're almost identical. According to the data, slightly more teens are aware of Playstation and teens think Xbox is slightly more cool than Playstation. It's essentially a wash though. If you compare similar brand relationships like Target and WalMart or Wendys and McDonalds, there's a large chasm between the two.

damn hold that L WSJ, lol

They didn't survey enough people...I hate it when about 800-1200 people is supposed to represent a demographic...and is this world-wide, nation-wide?
This isn't accurate enough for me... It's kinda lazy.

This lost me at X-Box.

While the xbox one may not be selling PS4 numbers, it's still a very successful piece of hardware.

Wouldn't this be skewed by BotW being released so recently? I'm honestly surprised that so many kids have that much love for Zelda.

Are these people that grew up playing Twilight vs Millenials that grew up playing Ocarina?

Parents preaching good games to kids is a real thing. I purchased Breath of the Wild for my 8 year old and now she's gone down the rabbit hole and loves all things Zelda.

Idk, these results seem pretty accurate to what kids these days are into.

This is how surveys work though 🤔

Also Generation Z is basically anyone young enough to not remember 9/11 but old enough to be able to speak (born 1995/6 through ~2014 but should be more like ~2011)

Generation Y is born ~1980 to 1995

So by them saying Generation Z likes YouTube and Oreos thats lumping pre-schoolers with some college kids.

It's more than enough if properly randomly selected. If it's not properly randomly selected, then no sample size is large enough short of asking nearly everyone. And it's pretty clearly just the US. The fact that Google had to time travel back to Reagan's presidency to do the article layout should be more disturbing.
