Gran Turismo Sport is extremely limited in offline mode (no saves, unlocks, etc..)

I think it wasn't called GT7 for a reason. PD already mentioned that it's online focused game and they did give it a different name to make that clear yet people still complain.

The "Sport" moniker does little to establish the differences. Marketing probably loves the ambiguity of it.

I was quiet for a lot of changes in the gaming industry like online multiplayer paywalls, DLC, microtransactions, etc...

But I don't know what kind of world this is when we can't even buy cars or save our gprogress offline in a driving game.

Are you suggesting they drop the name Gran turismo? Idk bout that.

They could have called it Gran Turismo anything and people (like myself who aren’t hardcore into the franchise but still buy GT whenever it comes out) would assume it’s another iteration in a 20 year franchise. That means a strong SP and likely a strong MP. Instead it’s more like opposite but without a strong SP. Most of GT’s audience who goes to buy this is in for quite a big surprise.

Of course, you don't drop the name Gran Turismo. That lies a bit of the push/pull between Sony and the consumers.

Sony: This is essentially a Gran Turismo game (from an actual gameplay standpoint), which is our best selling IP, but a new direction........we are focusing online.......what else would we call it?

They did what they thought was their best in calling it GT Sport as opposed to a true GT7 in name

Consumers: A new GT on my PS4? Sign me the fork up!!!

Average Joe consumer likely did not read that blog post. I even read that blog post and missed the part about saving. And I knew what I was getting into regarding the relative lack of SP content compared to past GT games.

It's going to piss some people off.

EDIT:
I kept making this statement the last month, all these GTS threads remind me so much of the SFV issues and reactions on here.

We will see if financially GTS has the same ill-effects of SFV.

Should've called it Gran Turismo Online, unless you've seen those interviews you won't know that GTS is online only.

My shits 24/7 online so no biggie but that is ridiculous we're in 2017 Sony..plus lacking in almost every area comparing to FM7 what reviews say..fk that keeping my $65.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Guess Project Cars 2 is the best VR driving game this year then

Yah totally., adding the word “Sports” in the title is an obvious and easy way to tell people its an online focused title.

But it has? I'll ask you a question, where else is Sony suppose to explain what the game will and will not have? Certainly that would be through their channels right? Just like Microsoft announces it's Xbox updates through their channels right? Or Nintendo has it's own direct for their games right? So if this is the case and you know of this because ...

A) You looked this up by going to the direct source

B) You seen it on NeoGaf

Or C) It was reported by your preferred new outlet

Then what was missed or completely misconstrued here? All of these things happened. I trying to understand what exactly was missed here that makes this situation bad? It's not like they even tried to hide this in any coded writing or they even went through everything to hide it (like not putting it on the box). I'm almost surprised that people who understands it has no microtransactions or loot boxes completely glossed over this?

Like I'm not saying that y'all are inept of reading or something but this is not as extreme as this thread is making it out to be. It was noted and repeated. I understand thinking it is the same game as before but I think they actually did go out of their way to let everyone know that it is going to be different than the rest. I dont know if they removed anything since i heavily dislike sim racers so I don't know about that but I'm just a bit confused...

How about in the product description page before you buy it? Instead of just "online requiered" or worst when buying digital "online play (optional)"

Nothing about the core Single player mode not present, but i understand why wouldnt you include this.

Look at your link....The Dev responded to this because split screen was removed from the game due to some issue with framerate and that was after fan feedback. There's a big difference here. And I believe that was discovered after the game launched....not even before it. Come on....

Doesnt matter whats the reason, the fact is something as big wasnt hidden in a to know list and it had its own thread.

Petter Hegevall at Gamereactor will give this a high score, I read that he applauded that the SP content was gone, lol. I hope other reviewers are taking a more serious approach. Can't expect everyone to start subscribing to PS+, there will be millions of gamers scratching their heads trying to figure out where all the usual GT content is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but stuff like earning credits, license tests etc can be earned "offline." So the offline stuff affects the online stuff. EG, if you don't pass certain tests, you won't qualify to compete in certain online races.

Just look at Diablo 3 console to see how offline modding has ruined the multiplayer component - there is a reason why now seasons on console is online only.
You are indeed wrong. the progress does not save while you're offline, period. No credits. Not tests done. Nothing. Just because offline modding ruined multplayer in one game does not mean it'll happen with others, the vast majority of games have offline saves that do not impact online multiplayer component at all and don't require to be online to save any progress made for offline components of the game.

Yep, it’s not cool to force this, but I have no issue with it because I’m always online. But there are people that just don’t want this - ask Microsoft how that Xbox One reveal went.

I completely understand why people are pissed off and I don’t blame them. Like some have said, should have called in GT Online.

To the people who keep saying "I'm always online anyway". You may always be online, but PD's servers certainly aren't.

I went through all this crap playing The Crew last year. I LOVE the game, but whenever I fired it up, it was pot luck if I would get to play or not (Yes, even the story mode).

I hate that shit.

I was wondering about that. Given Sony's tendency to shut down servers for their games, will they patch Gran Turismo Sport when the time comes?

No argument from me. Like I said, I am always online so I am a little alright with it. But, I completely understand your argument. You have a valid point and it’s starting to make me think a little more about this situation.

I can't keep going back and forth on this because I really don't care for this game. but I respect your opinion while respectfully disagree. It's your wallet anyways so do with it what you must.

For me this comes down to a damn if you do and damn if you don't. ✌🏾

Lol.

Well then. Glad I didn't fall for the defense force this game was getting during the demo phase.
The game is still completely amazing. I had it mostly written off until I played the demo and did a full 180.

But I absolutely understand if this is a deal breaker for some. Totally fair.

This wouldn't affect me because my online is pretty stable but goddamn, no offline progress, no offline saves, no offline campaign? Is that accurate? Wtf do those things have to do with being online?

I mean wouldn't calling this game GT7 make it instantly sell tons more, yet they went with all the trouble to call it a different name to differentiate between it and the main series, it's like complaining that Forza horizon is not a sim racer and only people who watched interviews, trailers will know it's not a sim racer!?? I'm not defending locking arcade mode behind being connected online but I'm defending it's online focus, i mean they made it clear since reveal.

Yeah, exactly, my online is super stable too, but the thing is, regardless of that, the servers may not be necessarily up when I have time to play. And that even being a thing if I just wanted to play offline and earn some credits and buy a car or get some tests done, is pretty damn stupid.

First GT I won't bother buying or maybe on discount like half the price or less.

Honestly, I read through the first 5 pages of this thread and I still don't know:

Without an internet connection, can I play a single player arcade race with a car that I unlocked by playing online? Like "pick car, pick track, pick ai and go"?? Or do I only have the general stuff? Can I use a custom livery for my car?

I can't see why you would need an internet connection for that. I'm asking primarily because I dislike unreasonable anti-consumer bullshit, but also because I might pick this game up next year and play partly in a room that has slower than 200kbity/s wlan at times.

They made it clear there was an online focus but muddied how that online is actually required. For even single player progress.

We know that from so long ...

Its clearly a 90% online multiplayer game and for me , this is better than a classic multiplayer with a singleplayer with bots...

Yes, you can with the Custom Race option. The caveat is no progress will be saved when offline -- leaderboard rankings, lap times, points earned, etc.

I don't like it, either, and feel like they could've separated out the data they were concerned about being hacked from the more mundane stuff. But maybe they just figured it'd be easier to have one save file and do it all online, and didn't think they'd get a lot of blowback.

"No progress saved" is still ok for me. I mean I don't like it, but access to all previously unlocked stuff when I set the PS4 to offline was my main concern.
Thanks

Youre misunderstanding what I'm saying. When I say "offline" It's the part of the game that doesn't actually require you to be online to participate in. But you still earn stuff that has an significant impact on the competitive part of the game, like license tests.

License tests can be earned solo, but you need them to actually race in certain races. If licenses were stored locally, then you can mod the files and go online to compete in races that you wouldn't othewise be able to.

Which online games allow you to earn stuff offline that have an impact in multiplayer? The only one I can think of is Diablo 3 and that game's multiplayer is ruined because of it.

so long = 5 days ago when the online manual was published and you were keeping up with news on GT fansites.

there was zero mention of arcade mode and offline mode progress not being saved if you're not online.

There's an SR rating for a reason. If someone modded the save to show they have done license tests and went online, they are matched up according to their skill and behavior they've shown online. SR is something that is only earned online and everyone starts on the low end. Having done the higher level missions will not give you access to a higher SR rating. The only thing earned offline that can be used online matches are cars, and cars are given out randomly anyways in a lot of instances. Some people lucked out with the fastest car in the game within the first hour.

Sounds like similar save situation like Hitman, which was not good. Polophony Digital had fallen off the cliff for the last decade and I really don't see this selling well compared to GT5.

You can access any previously saved data offline, so yeah, you can run an arcade race with stuff you've unlocked. You just can't save any progress from those races.

From the beta's online manual:

Gran Turismo Sport only supports online saving. Your game progress data will be stored on the online server. Please be aware, therefore, that any progress you make while offline cannot be saved (certain contents are saved onto the PlayStation®4 console's hard disk drive.) If you are playing offline, you will be able to use previously saved game progress data.

Whether it ditches progression from those races or saves them locally to later upload when online, I don't know. Depends on what "certain contents" mean from that line in the manual I guess.

Loudninja already posted this link from a month ago detailing those very facts: https://blog.eu.playstation.com/201...mo-sport-before-you-start-racing/#sf114033017

It was posted on GAF as well.
Already been mentioned multiple times over that it's still vague in regards to offline progress. Check the GT Sport Preview thread for proof. Now in hindsight we can make full sense of what they meant but it was vague at the time when posted. Look no further than NullPointer right above you, who was a regular in the preview threads and was trying to find concrete answers for a while to no avail (and that blog post did not qualify as an answer).

It wasn't until the online manual came out where we got absolute confirmation that you needed to be online to save any progress whatsoever. https://www.gtplanet.net/gt-sport-requires-internet-connection-game-saves/

And check out the writing on GTplanet and that article, they themselves say they weren't sure until the manual. This is a GT fansite of all things that was not sure up until 5 days ago, of something that we've "known for so long". That tells you something.

And again, that was after knowing the Sport mode was online, but before knowing that Arcade mode relies upon that same online-only progression to unlock cars and tracks to use. Which makes it a crappy offline mode. Arcade mode was commonly brought up as the alternative to Sport's online competitive focus and the meat of the offline play.

I don't know why this point keeps getting missed. Yes, there was a thread on that article but it really didn't clear up much.
