The real tragedy with GTAIV multiplayer is that some modes had so much wasted potential. Team Mafiya and Cops N Crooks were ridiculously fun with a full player count. It's a shame that not only was matchmaking borked but the lobby system was the absolute worst.
The huge issue with GTA IV multiplayer is that people typically default to Team Deathmatch, and the game was never built for that (surviving an RPG blast because you have a vest on in single player works because it keeps the flow of the game going, but it makes no sense online). The other issue is that by the time the two episodes came out, certain modes had
SIX playlists each - Ranked/Unranked for GTA IV, ditto for Lost and Damned, ditto for Gay Tony.
There should have been one set of playlists with a couple of offshoot modes for the DLC. If people who bought the episodes disc could have played with people who had the original game (similar to Red Dead's Undead Nightmare Collection, or the Halo 3 Mythic disc) things would have been much smoother.
But the modes you mentioned showed a ton of potential. If they can ditch this whole ranked/unranked business and handle the integration of DLC better, the game could be really terrific online.
