GTA: Greater Toronto Area.

Clever title. But as awesome as that would be (coming from there) they'd need an insane amount of art assets to capture the diversity: streets where the signs turn from English to Portuguese to Korean to Chinese and back to English, and that's just the west half, would be pretty difficult to pull off.

I would have loved for them to do an area that would allow them to do snow but I don't really want to see an east coast GTA for awhile. I wonder if they'll keep the time current or go back in time again.

haha. So true. Every time anyone mentions GTA on neogaf, the first thing I think is "Greater Toronto Area" and I click on the thread.... and then I realize it is about Grand Theft Auto... again!

would be the best game ever if it was in the GTA.

I'm still have a tiny bit of hope that this plays in the future. I don't want another GTV4 oder Vice city. Give me hovercars/boards and a futurama/DeusEx/Syndicate/massEffect city and i'm in.

Hast it already been confirmed its going to be in L.A??

Nope and that's where the fun is R* has this shit locked down tight and we're like thirsty dogs waiting for gaming news.

Hilarious to think it's going to be one of the most important minutes of gaming news this year.

Back then, GTA was about aping crime movies. Since then, it evolved into a series satirizing USA.
Oh, i'm not saying it will be out of the US, i'm saying they should stretch out to other places though.
You can only stomach so much consumerism satire.
Also the US are easy to pick up on, but they're not the only one, every country has its fair share of shit to laugh about.
Plus we need some variety in architecture.

Really? I can never get enough.

GTA has never been about seriousness though. That doesn't mean it has to be silly/over-the-top.
But it's always been pulpy. GTA has been more about Boyz In The Hood, Goodfellas, and Scarface than it has say... Godfather, The French Connection, or the Friends of Eddie Coyle.

While it's grounded in realism it's very much exaggerated.

Now if you want to exaggerate another culture - cool - I'm down.
They are faced with a lot of uphill hurdles with that one, notably getting your massive user base to accept that change.

American culture is perpetually ripe for the picking; call me ethnocentric if you like but America mastered if not invented the Entertainment industry.
They don't really have the proper objectivity to do European culture so it's basically what? France, Australia, Japan, China, India?

It'll be interesting to see where they go after V but I wouldn't mind if they retired the license.

Hey Rockstar Games,

put Zombies in it!!!1
No doubt, they did it with RDR and highlighted the GTA IV PC Zombie mod. I believe Undead Nightmare sold pretty well?

Would have loved to have an official (Zombie) DLC with GTA IV.

GTAIII, VC, and SA did both, and did them particularly well.
Unless you mean pre-GTAIII days.

The Dark Days.

I was playing Undead Nightmare with my mate last night and we both thought it'd just be so cool to have a rundown Liberty City zombie apocalypse DLC. Even if it is completely cheap, ripoff of RDR Undead NIghtmare, I'd be happy.

I forgot RDR: GOTY came out this month. I'm gonna have to get that and finally experience that game.
Anyhow I'm still pumped for GTAV. I'm sure the trailers alone can sell me on it.

why put V & Five on the logo?

Seems like the most obvious answer is Vegas

Grand Theft Auto being set in Vegas has been milling around for a long time; it makes sense for the series, it's a very famous setting for crime drama especially mobster drama (think "Casino" with DeNiro and Pesce); and the cash motif on the logo fits the city perfectly, we all know Vegas is all about money and gambling; not to mention the roman numeral for five is a giant V, which... going along with the other points makes a pretty good case for the city. It would be a cool setting with a lot of room for bringing zaniness back to the series - helicopters, airshows, stuntman, fun fun fun... really no room in a Nevada desert setting for boats though.

DC is the only one I would consider a possibility if it's not west coast. The thing about GTA games is Rockstar seems to like to have iconic locales. To a regular person, what does Chicago or Detroit (outside of the auto industry) bring that Liberty didn't already cover? They seem to want each game to have a completely new look and feel. DC would at least bring the political angle, but even then, if Rockstar want to do something completely different from 4, it would have to be WestCoast/Vegas or Florida.

Philly would be great. As someone who was born there, I'd appreciate seeing more games based in the city.
Philly, Baltimore or DC would rock my world. Sadly I don't think rockstar has it in them to make that big of a jump. Easier to revisit old cities they've already done.

Would that be Goodfellas the movie more closely based on real events than any other movie in the last 20 years?

Goodfellas has a lot of dark humor though. Obviously it's not a comedy but it's got a lot of over the top shit.

The point is that the "over-the-top shit" actually transpired.

yeah but it didn't necessarily have a super serious tone. A lot of that has to do with the pacing of the movie and how it was filled. So much of the real crazy shit (mostly what Pesci did) was done so callously and without reaction that it came off as insane and over the top. Like when he shoots the bartender kid, DeNiro and Liotta get mad at him, but more of in a "you're a jerk, you know that?" kind of way, not a "wow you are a sociopath bro" way. Reminds me of some of the scenes in Pulp Fiction too ("I shot Marvin in the face!") I can see some inspiration for GTA in that.

Yes yes, this is what i meant.
There are a lot of cultures and countries you can make fun of.
I think you can easily make fun of England/Scotland/Irland, you can make fun of France, you can make fun of various Asian country.
Now i don't expect "unkown" stuff like Malaysia to be used, but something like the UK? Everybody knows Guy Ritchie's films, play it on the drunken stereotype or whatever, it's not like their take on US society was insightful anyway, you can always find a satirical and funny side to everything, even the French Banlieue.

I'd be fine with LA and Vegas , Orleans and surrounding area or DC/Philly. Actually i'd be fine with anything(except obviously Liberty City) so long as they increase mission variety, bring back rpg elements like in SA and buying property like in VC.

I can't see them doing New Orleans nor do I understand why people want that so badly.

My money is on DC/Baltimore (Capital City) perhaps Philly (Carcer City) and Kentucky (countryside, oxycontin).

Doubt Bmore very much but it would be pretty sweet. Future maybe.

Neither DC or Vegas are large enough to be on their own. They must be attached to something.

I'm calling the leaked LA stuff a red herring.

IV was rumored to be in Vice City before the trailer, after all...
