Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I prefer the more """""""""realistic""""""""" rendering of mh movie for my dragons, or pacific rim, i don't like the skin on the little dragon.

I gotta say despite the youtube compression, i really like the look of Stalker in the DF review. I love the photorealistic art style coming off of dragon Age and the asset quality and foliage density looks a significant step up from last gen games.

It's a shame that the game is practically broken at launch or i wouldve subbed to Gamepass for it. guess i will wait till indiana jones comes out to sub.

P.S unrelated but important. My EA sub is going to expire at the end of november and since im almost done with dragon age, i figured id try out other games. I already have jedi survivor so looked to see what other next gen games EA has released and its just Dead Space and Immortals. Thats it. lol. This is literally the biggest gaming publisher in terms of revenue and they have a total of 4 next gen games in 4 years. i have no idea why they think we will continue to sub month after month when they refuse to release games. its just dragon age this year and then battlefield late next year. nothing in between. what a shame. its crazy to say this but after Battlefield, the only games they might release this gen are Star Wars jedi 3 and Motive's Black Panther game. Thats it. 7 games in 7 years.

Not sure if you've tried Immortals, but it's actually quite visually stunning at times. The facial detail/animations are top tier.

This year I haven’t been that impressed with the graphics for anything but Hellblade 2 and Wukong. Part of it is they both have good art direction in their own ways - but idk Star Wars outlaws did nothing for me… maybe I just didn’t play it enough

Really? Unmatched?

Dude this is deacon ps4 INGAME, not even cutscene, and he already look on par if not more realistic.

Not seeing it at all.

And yeah, I stand by what I said. Hellblade II probably beats it but I can't think of any others.

I'm not saying Immortals is incredible looking throughout, but specifically the cutscene faces are extremely impressive IMO.

You are not seeing what? that deacon looks as good if not better?

I think calling anything inside immortal nearly unamtched is bizzarro world.

Forbidden west on ps4 probably dismantle the characters of immortals, and it's a ps4 gigantic open world with a huge cast of character, not a semi-linear, nextgen only fps.

Yeah, I will agree the real-time cutscenes are what stood out the most. I think they're near-unmatched though.

Few of my shots:

Game needed to be in third person with those character models. Its shocking how the director kept making bad choices one after another.

From what i read:

- Director forced his team to make this game a first person shooter despite being a mage game.
- Director then played some 60 fps game and forced his team to target 60 fps with no 30 fps mode.
- Director then switched to UE5 late into the game's dev cycle causing all kinds of chaos.

its a shame how people at the top keep making poor decisions that cause games to fail. Then the ones who are laid off are the ones who had nothing to do with them.

BTW, did anyone else try out Horizon FW on the Pro? I keep going back to it because I get the feeling they have upgraded the graphics even more. I am too stupid to realize just exactly whats changed but it definitely looks better than it did on my base PS5 last week. I mostly only play Fidelity mode so its not like im going from performance to fidelity mode.

I also gave HZD another shot and meh. The one great thing is that its a very good PC port that allows you to couple DLSS with FSR framegen without any mods. It also allows you to use DLAA instead of TAA which is option greyed out in many games. Forza 8 was the last game i played with DLAA and this one looks almost as good. Very clean IQ, but HFW's native 4k mode on the Pro just looks cleaner and sharper and is more eye popping than ever. The draw distance is still kind shit and there is fog fucking everywhere so i really want to know what they changed to make it look better.

It sucks that Sony doesnt allow you to play the game on two devices at once so i cant switch back and forth on the same tv.

P.S My son wanted to know the difference between resolution and framerate so i switched between native 4k and native 700p in HZD remaster and my god, it was such a pixelated mess. Did we really play games like this in the PS3 era or did we never notice because games were simply not pushing this level of detail?
Will you still return your Pro or did you lie back then ?

Oh cmon...are you really leaving me alone??

We should share out mistakes dude.
i only bought it because i realized i can return it without a restocking fee.

also, wasnt too happy with some of the coverage by these so-called professional. first thing i did was run games with unlocked framerates to get a better idea of the pro gpu performance.

Dude you have a pc, the pro should be only used with sony first parties and gta6, you have to hang on the hope that all the next sony games are gonna play much better on pro.

Or my existence has no sense :messenger_tears_of_joy:

i will buy it next year when gta6 comes out and if it gets a price cut. $700 without disc drive is just wrong. i wont buy it on principle alone.

New AC Shadows footage, bitrate is killing a lot of detail but the visuals look for good and polished.

Hard to say with the rallenty involved but it seems that after 3 games, they finally nailed headshot with a bow, past games had the same precanned death animation and then the enemies flopping like ragdolls but here seems like the arrow actually transmit the kinetic force and the body move accordingly, hopefully it's not just a different precanned animation and enemies are not gonna fall down in this same way no matter the angle etc. (ala tsushima)

(the only way to have satisfying bow headshot in the past was to use the bow shotgun skill but it was no good for stealth)

There are so many moments of this regularly during the game, buildings, interior spaces, and exterior detail and props that legitimately look photorealistic while playing the game in-person. The only real bruise for me is RT reflections look a bit blobby in puddles, but then again, I’m playing on console where RT isn’t the best anyhow. Doesn’t detract from the overall experience, but I thought I’d still mention it. I want to test Stalker 2 on PC, but only after it’s in a much better state, and I’m busy with AW2 and Wukong on my PC, in any case.

Like I said earlier though, I’m super, super impressed with how well Series X is chewing through Stalker 2. Performance mode needs work, but Quality mode has been awesome for me. This is the biggest UE5 game by a significant margin (and just one of the biggest games, period) in sheer size, scope, and ambition, yet is running at 1440p internally, before being upscaled to 4K on console. I just never expected a Series X to handle stuff like lumen and nanite as well as it does. Apparently, a vast majority of Stalker 2’s locations are hand crafted as well.

It may sound like I’m gushing, but simply having played for 3 hours in total, that box has seriously impressed me. GSC definitely didn’t leave much left on the table as far as graphics and fidelity in Quality mode. Everything is turned on.

Whoa! That's great to hear about Stalker. Was not expecting that high of praise coming from you especially for SX . .lol I thought you were Slimy for a second there who's notoriously tough on games ...well, it's still high praise

Phil Spencer talking about not being able to grow the console userbase got me thinking. You have around 200-250 million people who buy consoles every generation. Nintendo has lost around 100 million units since they merged their handheld and console business, but lets just ignore the handheld business for now and look at Sony and MS. Sony sold 150 million PS2s, Xbox sold 20 million Xboxs. Thats 170 million. Then Sony and MS both sold around 85 million units. Thats 170 million. Then Sony sold 120 million PS4s, Xbox sold 50 million. Thats 170 million. This generation Sony is lagging behind 10 million behind PS4 and Xbox is also 10 million behind with around 25 million so far and will probably finish around 30-35 million. Sony should finish around 100 million. They wont even hit 150 million this gen.

And why? Why cant we grow? Why are we shrinking?

I cant help but think it's because we've been making the same games since the PS360 era. nothing has changed. Non gamers look on and see the same shit they saw and rejected in mid to late 2000s. Half Life 2 documentary was released yesterday for its 20th anniversary and I was like we still dont have a shooter thats topped a 20 year old game. Forget topped, we are still following the same formulaic template that was designed back in 2004. Where is the innovation? What do we need to do to bring new blood into this industry?

I dont know if physics or destruction or a next gen GTA3 like sandbox game is going to be enough to get people excited about playing on consoles again. But clearly, stuff like Horizon FW, Hellblade 2, Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar, Astrobot, or even Silent Hill 2 which is literally GOTY caliber is not enough to attract new players.

I have two brothers. They played some racing games and GTA back in the day then completely moved on. My younger brother got into Warzone during covid but while i gave him access to my entire PS4 and PS5 library, none of the games clicked with him. Not even GOW or GTA5. Gaming isnt for everyone but these guys didnt stick around despite gaming fairly regularly in the PS2 era. And its because the games simply havent given them this MUST PLAY holy shit feeling GTA did back in the day.

I think devs have found a blueprint for modern games and are sticking to it. The result is safe formulaic games that appeal to an ever shrinking userbase and a complete lack of innovation. Stifling the industry in a state of arrested development.
This. Most games fail the first 10-15 min to generate fun.

If Sony really is wasting effort on a handheld, we have reached the end of cutting edge games. Depressing, truthfully.

It's just so baffling that Sony let them get to that point. It's the only thing that allowed them so much success. I trusted the devs themselves to have enough self respect to go the extra mile, but I guess they really took Jim Ryan's empty-headed business man profile as permission to relax. And we let them. We're not their friends, we're paying customers.

Kotaku and Schreier did untold amounts of damage with all of those hit pieces whining about crunch, too. The journalist class depressed the standards for this industry. When they brought back G4, they should've had Adam Sessler taking the piss out of studios like he used to, not this coddling HR horseshit.

And fuck gamers for playing League of Legends and GTAO for 10 years uninterrupted. Selling this medium up the goddamn river.

I wonder how long until these losers recognize how unenthusiastic people are about the medium.
So lol & Gtao are what gamers want aka fun. This industry has to figure out how to capture its genre fans before only a handful of titles are sold.

To post one of my older screenshots :messenger_grinning: ... yeah, HFW had some pretty good face-tech already (though the shot is from PS5 in Photo-mode):

It looks like a Killzone 2 + Watch Dogs level downgrade compared to some of the trailers.

I got a PS5 pro to try out some games since Bestbuy had it stock and a youtuber i like said he was going to return his. Figured what the hell, i know I can return it within 14 days and get a full refund.

TLDR; Not impressed. $700 for a 25-35% more powerful console isn't worth it. Maybe if it performed like the gpu specs and offered 67% more performance then sure. Bestbuy lets you return opened items within 14 days and during holiday season, they are extending the return period till January 31st so if you really want to try it, just try it for a few weeks then return it. this thing is going back as soon as I try out demon souls, ratchet and ff7 rebirth. Not worth $700. hell, not even worth $399. I expected better than 30% from cerny. DO NOT get this from a place that doesnt accept opened returns. There is a good chance you wont notice any difference.

Tried 3 games.

HFW - Looks amazing. They must have improved graphics in the fidelity mode. I wouldn't be surprised if they have enabled better AO, and shadows. Now its performance mode feels great but i can definitely say its not as sharp as fidelity.

Spiderman 2- this one just hurts. PSSR in performance mode has the same shimmering as the OG ps5 performance. Overall image quality is fine if you are not flying at fast speeds, but the moment you do the shimmering begins. I don't even think its running at 1440p internal resolution. this must be pssr 4k performance or 1080p internal resolution just like the base ps5.

The new RT effects are good. especially the distant shadows. I really like the skyline which already looked great but now they don't stand out and feel grounded if that makes any sense. Honestly, i think Horizon FW could really use these because a lot of the pop-in is shadow related.

TLOU2 - This is the one game that delivers on the Cerny pitch. great 4k pssr quality image. looks identical to native 4k. maybe a little better.

But it's the performance mode of the original game that explains all the compromises in Spiderman 2. My og ps5 runs the same section at 85 fps, ps5 pro? 105 fps. that's a mere 23% upgrade. it should easily be running at 120 fps locked. the only time it runs at a locked 120 fps is when the base ps5 would run at 95 fps. Turning on PSSR which renders at the same internal resolution gets us 78 fps. that means it cost us 34% just to use PSSR despite running at the same internal resolution.

And there in lies the problem. You have around 30% more GPU but PSSR is expensive so you have to settle for fewer RT effects at 60 fps at lower resolutions.

I wonder if GG didn't add RT shadows here because that would mean dropping to 1080p which would add shimmering like it does in Spiderman 2. ugh.
Loooooool. I should have bet someone money.

Played some PS5 games on my old 1080p tv i bought back in 2012-2013 for my PS4. I was surprised to see the image quality even at 1080p was really good. Especially compared to my 4k oled. Games were downsampled from 4k or 1440p so I expected it to look cleaner but i honestly couldnt tell the difference. Especially coming off playing the pro and other pc games on my 4k oled tv.

That got me thinking. Did we all just get duped into buying these expensive tvs? I bought a $1k tv for my PS4 pro then a $2k OLED for my PS5 and going back to this tv for the first time since 2016, I am like why did i ever switch?

Ive tried DriveClub and batman AK on this tv before because i knew the jaggies that show up on 4k tvs are not there, but I was still surprised by how clean they looked on this tv. We have increased the resolution of our tvs by 4x. Our GPUs and consoles are struggling to run games at 4k and have to settle for sub 1080p resolutions in 60 fps modes. They look like crap on these 4k sets, and why? We created a problem by upgrading tv sets and are now trying to fix it with AI upscalers, $1000 GPUs, and $800 consoles.

The only real benefit i saw was that its easier to make out the details on the 4k sets. but its not worth $2k and definitely not worth the terrible IQ we get on these new consoles.

Not for me, oled tech and 4k compared to 1080p are a huge plus.

I was not on board with the whole 120hz because i thought 60 were more than enough, but whem you actually tey locked 120 you can't go back anymore.

As far as I know, Driveclub and Batman AK don't support HDR. So SDR images shouldn't pop as much.

But saying a 4k oled tv is 'similar' to a - probably lcd - tv from 2012 is a bit insane.

I am finding Stalker 2 to be a little underwhelming graphically speaking. I think I am starting to dislike UE5 in general

Played the quality mode on Xbox Series X. Looks great, but Metro looked better. It's cool I guess, but not that eye-popping.
