Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

It’s not washed out at all if you play with hdr.
And it looks amazing in gameplay most of time for me. Obviously cutscenes are higher quality
It still looks washed out in HDR.

I don't know if PS5 has a different implementation of HDR, but it's one of the underwhelming HDR experiences on the PC.

Overall graphics are serviceable. Not amazed in any respect.

It is slightly washed out. What tv do you have?

For lg cx, we can fine tune dark area settings to reduce the black levels.

Reduce in game hdr max to whatever your tv sets max hdr is and find out if your tv has a fine tune dark areas setting.

Edit: nvm. I thought you were talking about ac shadows.

LG C2.

FF16

Most games on PC have awful HDR settings. Just one simple crappy brightness slider.

There is no way to fine tune the image.

I find RTX HDR actually does a better job but it also incurs a performance penalty.

I know we often site TLOU II for still being incredible looking as it was made late on in the PS4's life cycle but I had an itch to play Uncharted 4 the other night as I thought about how the game is almost 10 years old and my god it was stunning looking. Then I realized I was playing the PS4 Pro code instead of the PS5 version... It obviously looks even better using the native PS5 app at 1440p/60fps.

I think part of the reason some of us are still very disappointed with this gen was that the early PS4 gen really spoiled us not with resolution but with PBR. The likes of Arkham Knight, Driveclub, Quantum Break, The Order, Infamous Second Son, Bloodborne and U4 are all still absolutely stunning nowadays then later Horizon, Spider-Man, Gears 5, Death Stranding and Forza Horizon 4. Can you pick out "last gen" aspects of their visuals? of course but overall and considering some of the games are a decade old it's astonishing to me how great they all still look.

I'll be here and present to be ridiculed on Wed after the Switch 2 showcase. I expect a lot of "looks like a PS4 game" type posts but you know what? That will be fucking amazing if the above is anything to go by!

Oh nice I didn’t realise it went beyond 1440p/60fps or should I be using the 4k mode did they unlock the 30fps cap on it? I didn’t think that mode would have the option to unlock the framerate at 4k.

The middle mode I was using when unlocking the framerate hovers around 80fps on my TV’s gaming mode display. Have no idea if it’s accurate and I struggle to notice above 60fps in fluidity terms if I’m honest although I can feel the difference in the controls a bit.

Is there a way of having an fps counter on the LG OLED’s without opening that menu like a steam framerate counter? Cheers.

In terms of the Switch 2 event I will probably be let down with Prime 4 but I’m looking for it to get a boost to 1080p then DLSS’d up to 1440p and that will be quite the boost in IQ alone. With any additional power maybe they could make a 30fps mode with RT AO & RT Reflections. It supports ray reconstruction apparently.

If Nintendo get close to the Crash Team Racing remake visuals at 60fps on Mario Kart 9 I will be happy as they’ve doubled the racer count.

3D Mario, Luigi’s Mansion 4 and the next Xenoblade will be the visual showcases for the system imo. If they manage to hit the Ratchet PS4 Remake visuals at 60fps I will be happy with that for 3D Mario.

Xenoblade / Bayonetta 4 / Fire Emblem maybe like a visually nerfed Genshin. LM4 could be the one insane game visually if they use RT and a high resolution at 30fps (the one game I don’t think needs to be 60fps) considering what they achieved with LM3 on Switch.

Very interesting to see if they show a glimpse of the next Zelda aswell. Happy if that looks as good as the recent stylised Souls game (forget the name) with a few compromises here and there.

At the end of the day it’s Nintendo but I do think there will be some gorgeous looking stylised games on show.

In terms of shocks I’d love if they closed the show with just the GTAVI logo and “2026”. If it runs on Series S it’s at least possible on Switch 2 with downgrades and 25tps performance lol. I’d also like to see Cyberpunk 2077+DLC and Elden Ring+DLC all on the console in the first year too if only for the Series S / Steam Deck digital foundry videos and meltdowns haha.

Your pics look beautiful, clear image vibrant colours.
I wish i had this image quality with my OLED tv (OLED55C4)
I have questions for you please.
Are this your only presets ?
"Warm50, Dynamic Tone Mapping ON (because hgig sucks ass)"
You did not change anything else ?
And what about your PS5 video presets ?

Im asking because on a thread about new oled tv someone posted a video of some taiwanese dude who was all about hgig, and a lot of people were like this guy is the god of oled setting, but i tried to follow his advice and wasn't happy with the result. It was surely not as bright looking while still having all the details like your pics...

TL; DR : can you give me your full tv and console video setting pretty please so i can have the same screen quality as you ??

ok, but AC Origins was not 468 GB lol.
It's the dev build before compression tools are used to go gold.

AC Shadows is stunning looking but man I got bored fast. Barely lasted 5 hours with it. The World seems so constrained compared to the last trilogy. Got sick of bumping up against invisible walls all the time it's awful coming from their past three AC, Skyrim, Zelda ER, RDRII etc...

Nvidia should pay Ubisoft dividends for doing such a good job with AC:S` RT systems.
It`s been a while since we`ve seen such a mainstream showcase of why RT is inevitable going forward (Indiana Jones` "meh" GI outside of its PT mode didn`t really cut it)
Yep. PT was literally only possible on two cards 4080 and 4090 (and i guess 16 GB 50 series nowadays). The game otherwise was super meh, and needlessly expensive for such a linear and at best wide linear game. If only 4% of the cards on steam can run it with proper RT reflections, and GI then by definition its the most unoptimized game ever made. But no, lets it give it graphics goty.

AC Shadows, and most UE5 games at least run on most modern GPUs with all their fancy bells and whistles.

Looks like Doom has RTGI, RT Reflections, Virtualized Geometry (limited to non-foliage objects) and fully destructible environments.

No Path Tracing required a la Indiana Jones. probably because vram is saved up by using nanite for most geometry.

It took a while but we are finally getting games with destruction. Some 2 years after RTGI started being introduced in games. Seems pretty granular too. One of my favorite things to do in AC Shadows is to find these cabinets and watch them each individual object have full physics applied to them. But part of me also wished i could destroy those wooden pillars holding up the roof for complete destruction. Thats what Doom is promising, although only for some wooden structures.

This is the biggest thing with RTGI I think. I get many people don’t really care about it because we got so good at tricks with baked lighting - but this should allow for having much more dynamic/visually cohesive worlds with physics and destruction

That bit where he shot a hole in the wooden structure and sunlight poured in was so good.

I absolutely can't wait to see the Max Payne remakes because if Control was any indication we're getting a lot of destruction there.

The game will be technically proficient( its Id!) and love the added physics no doubt but does it seem like the graphics have been downgraded from the earlier trailer/reveal to you? Especially in terms of geometric detail and textures it feels like the granular geometric detail and textures barely improved from eternal while the trailer seemed different in that aspect.

This is just RT GI. Expected. We cannot call every game that uses RT to have "great graphics".
RT requires the least amount of effort compared to well implemented other techniques.
Still the game looks less impressive than doom 2016 to me.

Not sure what it is. If it's art style or kinda barren tech. Everything looks flat and gamey. Lacks the physicality of lighting we see in games like Dragons Dogma 2 for example.

Not to sound like a whiny bitch, but maybe we are finally getting back games with destruction.

It is nice in Shadows, especially when you're playing with freight train Yasuke and you go to those little camps and you can destroy half of the objects there, but it's the bare minimum I expected for some time that games would have.
Control IMO had better physics, also had great RT, granted it's a much smaller game, but still. I remember Crysis, it was a beast graphically at the time, had amazing physics and destruction that puts to shame a good amount of games today, but that was almost 20 years ago.

These youtube previews typically are done via GeForce Now streaming and most footage captured is low bitrate. At least when compared to those trailers the marketing team captures themselves. Id wait for the final release to any downgrade comparisons.

I did an outpost 'Destroy the loot' mission in one of those outposts last night as Naoe. Used my Kusarigama to destroy those yellow cloth banners so i could sneak in, and take out the big samurai guarding the loot box. But not only did it cut through the cloth, it also cut through some destructible objects AND destroyed the loot box behind it. Mission (Accidently) accomplished.

Doom hasn't been downgraded. The current videos include HUD elements, screen text, and other overlays, which, combined with YouTube's compression, can make the visuals seem worse than they actually are. I'm confident the final game will look just as good as originally shown.

hmm let me think. Remember different settings for SDR and HDR modes. We are talking about HDR mode:
PS5 - all on auto really. HDR ON when supported, Vrr on for unsupported games, 120hz on, HDR calibrated with DTM ON.
C1 - TPC and GSR disabled with service remote - but that does not matter for these bright scenes.
-Game optimizer picture mode
-Warm 50 color temp
-Input icon PC
-Energy saving disabled
-Disabled all AI picture stuff
-Dynamic Tone Mapping ON
-Clarity sharpness 0
Everything else essentially on default.

The taiwanese dude who is all about hgig is a TV calibrator from UK. He is technically Correct... but games rarely use hgig and even less so ps5 system settings.
But using DTM ON with 4k nits is also correct. dtm expects to get 4k max signal to tonemap it to your tv. So it IS correct. Just different way of displaying HDR. I much prefer it.
if you have any questions, please ask.
Not sure if this is correct for lg c4! I would follow what hdtvtest dude does but use DTM

I never use HGIG. It dims the picture. Fuck that. The entire point of HDR and OLED is to get the best colors possible. I didnt pay $2k for this fucking tv just to artificially dim the picture just to get 'accurate' picture settings.

Game Mode already disables 50% of all the cool shit that makes these modern tvs look so good. Anyone asking you to enable HGIG needs to be ignored.

Especially on older LG OLEDs like my CX or C1 that have only 800 peak brightness as it is. My 2016 Samsung KS8000 had 1000 nits HDR which looked so much more brighter than anything ive seen on my much more modern and more expensive OLED.

I would also recommend switching from Warm to Neutral or Cool. Warm adds that orange piss filter that gives everything that UE3 brown filter. No thanks.

Perfectly said.
About the warm50 though - the piss filter effect goes away quickly. I got used to it a lot.
But I can see why someone might want to have this value lower. But 0 is really "blueish" to me now

Agree to disagree on the visuals, I think it looks pretty good and maxed out PC version should be a step above what we're seeing.

Not entirely sure what you mean by the bolded bit. Assuming RT requires less effort to make things look good and, in id tech's case, runs fast without compromises to image quality on consoles shouldn't we celebrate it? Your comment almost sounds negative to me.

I mean that technically every game nowadays can have RT or at least software lumen and have the light basics covered.
So that alone does not account for much nowadays.
Judging what's good or bad graphics is difficult when every game is "technically" using rt and so on.. and when light behaves as expected in every newly released game, we will probably move to judging other aspects of the graphics.. whatever it might be

Cinematography. I know exactly what you mean. Doom's lighting looks bland in those previews. Just like Indy's lighting despite having RT.

My guess is the Path tracing version will transform the visuals, just like it did for Indy. Right now, their 60 fps target is making them reduce visual fidelity.

i LOVE this time of day and season. great use of volumetric lighting. Beautifully shaded trees. It's almost up there with Black Myth and Avatar's trees.

I was bemoaning the lack of volumetric fog in the opening region, but its used plenty in other regions during all times of day. And it doesn't feel like its used to hide draw distance, but to enhance the mood and atmosphere.
