Flashless at the Golden Globes
Yep. I was shocked by how limited the whole earthquake, flood, fire and avalanche tech was in DS2. It was basically a gimmick. There is nothing new here. Another DLC expansion. Most of the games they are doing look like cross gen games that could be easily ported to PS4. There is no ambition on display.
Even looking at DeS remake that don't use any RT - this game still looks very good and beyond what PS4 could handle, same is true for R&C and this game has very good use of RT. Sony studios became lazy after 2020, probably only SM2 count as decent gen to gen uplift.
When it comes to resolutions, Forbidden West launched with dogshit 1800p CB resolution, they made results much better after few months but it's still below 1440p in pure pixels. DS2 looks not that much better than DS1 and we go down from native 2160p (with drops within VRR window to ~50fps) to 1440p (that is quite soft). Returnal has abysmal resolution on base PS5 (1080p), GOWR is literally PS4 game in 1440p+
This has been true for virtually every single sony game this gen. Demon Souls remake didnt even add the plunging attack move. Like at least bring the combat up to modern day standards? Ratchet felt very samey outside of the portal setpieces. Spiderman 2 was very samey. GOW felt like DLC and HFW was fairly samey.
I just dont get it. Why take 5 years and make a game that could easily pass for DLC? Especially when you have a new generation of tech. Finally a CPU worth a damn. Finally a SSD you were begging for over a decade. If you dont want to upgrade graphics., surely you can add new ideas. Yes, Zelda reused the same map, and forgot to upgrade graphics, but they innovated so much with the phyiscs, the new design mechanics and built the whole game around it. I wasnt even mad at the lack of graphics upgrades because it felt like a completely new game despite set in the same damn world.
And yes, most people dont know that 1440p 60 fps isnt even a sony standard. Returnal was 1080p. Spiderman 2 was 1080p. Ratchet with RT was dropping to 1080p. Miles too. Remember they shipped miles and ratchet's performance modes without RT and thats why they were around 1440p-1600p. As soon as they added RT to those games, the resolution would dip to 1080p during any major combat section or setpiece.
