Yes, but it ran awfully on hardware of the time. Needed multiple CPU and GPU generations until you could max it out properly. It was also optimised for single core cpu performance, but cpus began focusing on multi-core performance so getting locked 60 or higher at all times was pretty difficult even multiple years later.I think Crysis 1was very ahead of its time, no?
Too bad they have shit hair physics...
I think that must be the only good thing in Failguard, the hair.Too bad they have shit hair physics...
Devs have definitely been slacking when it comes to character models this gen. I think it's by design. They just dont want to waste precious GPU resources rendering cutscene quality character faces during gameplay. For some reason, Hero lighting hasnt taken off even though Horizon FW set the bar for ingame character models years ago. in a cross gen game no less.
But games are already too expensive and barely run at 1440p 30 fps. Sometimes dropping to 1296p to maintain 30 fps. Who knows what lighting those character models costs, or how expensive it would be to have cutscene quality character faces during gameplay.
There are some games that allow you to turn off Hair physics so i am not sure why the same cant be done for hero lighting or cutscene quality character models. Just give us that toggle if we dont like the performance hit. At least on PC.
With all that said, there have been some exceptions this gen. hellblade 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Alan Wake 2, callisto, James and Ashley in Silent Hill 2, that one dude in Mafia (lol) and the upcoming GTA6 and Marvel 1943 of course.

Both games have top graphics on PC with max settings (both won DF's "graphics of the year").but not as good as Avatar or Star Wars Outlaws IMO.

The visuals are really great. You can clearly see the high asset quality in combination with the natural RT based lightning, its beautiful.
my son was playing fortnite this morning and while the character models look good, it looks like a ps3 game outdoors, but then every time he entered an interior building, the lighting just came alive. Absolutely gorgeous bounce lighting and material quality.Indoors are wayyyyy better than outdoors in this game.
Visuals have a long way to go.

Ofc its AI, which doesnt make his point irrelevant, there is so much more ground before we even get close to photorealistic graphics its not even funny, maybe by ps7 we will get to similar quality, who knows. That looks like AI
We were pretty risk-averse.
I really like scalability of modern games, solid example is quantum break, made for 1,2tf gpu xbox one with its jaguar cpu, looking like this:
(720p internal/native res, 30fps with tearing and rare dips)
To it maxed on pc looking and playing like this:
No photo mode, no carefully curated screenies/tiny gifs that hide actual visual quality, no bullshot pr material nor cgi pretending to be actual ingame/realtime but proper gameplay in 4k(and super tiny bit of real time cutscenes), game still looks solid af, not top of current gen obviously but could easly pass for crossgen even if its from early 2016 and made with xbox one in mind
When we talking about "graphics fidelity we expect this gen" we want generational improvement over that, not similar, and on consoles, not maxed out pc which is stronger from both ps6 and next gen xbox pc mashine![]()
Tragic.Both GTA6 and Marvel 1943 delayed.
Worse generation since the great depression.
Meanwhile if you are on consoles, the developers nor platform holders can't be bothered to provide playable framerate updates for these older games, despite sometimes featuring them on their subscription services. People wonder why consoles are starting to feel like a dying platform, well here you are- games like Quantum Break which is an Xbox exclusive never gets updated so its stuck at 30 fps with low settinga. Microsoft probably wonders why the Xbox brand is in shambles too- Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, dead rising 3 are a few more Xbox one exclsusives stuck at 720p/30 fps!

Yeah I get it too but the proof is in the pudding ...look at Xbox right now. Look how PC is growing and how upset console people are feeling towards all 3 platform holders. Even if profits are high the feeling that they are just taking, taking, taking is growing without any good will to balance things out.It sucks, but I kind of get it.
Say if by some miracle Microsoft can keep the cost of wages/overhead for performance boosting Quantum Break to $10,000 (probably a conservative number). Selling for $20 a copy, they'd need 500 new sales to make their efforts financially worth it. Or somehow prove they drew in new customers to Game Pass.
Quantum Break's Xbox sales in the past week were likely near-zero. So it'd be easy enough to measure impact of doing it.
But then you get into arguing the intangibles: it would build goodwill with the diehard Xbox fans; but on the counterpoint, it's not just a budget question for Microsoft, there's also an opportunity cost to doing this versus something else.
That's what buy-it-again remakes, remasters, and reboots are for!Yeah I get it too but the proof is in the pudding ...look at Xbox right now. I always go back to 2020/2021 with MS when SX seemed to have positivity surrounding it, their BC initiative felt like it would keep getting better and then when MS got obsessed with GamePa$$ and all their priorities shifted overnight.
This area of BC needs to be figured out by these clown companies once and for all because it's a joke compared to PC. Then again maybe they don't care since they've got their feet in the door aleady on PC anyway.
PS- the blame doesn't even all lie on the 3 platform holders but with developers too of course. How many games are releasing right now without any thought towards future-proofing? It's insane. We are in a time where consoles are PC's in all but name and the next mid gen upgrade or next gen system is no more than 4 years away, yet these incompetent studios/publishers haven't standardized modes with DRS and upcapped framerates....so when the PS6 rolls around I STILL won't be able to play MGS Delta or Silent Hill 2 with a decent resolution or image quality since they are "stuck" with whatever resolution and framerate limits they have now!

It will be delayed again. At least we have Fable
lets be honest Microsoft is going to cancel it
Thats ridiculous. Did they have a 3-5 person team working on it for the first 4+ years or something? It will be delayed again.
I find it insane that devs still dont realize that they need to shorten their dev cycles. Like they see all these layoffs because of their inability to get games out in 3-4 years, and decided to double down and work on 6-8 year dev cycles. Absolutely retarded bunch. Maybe its coming from the top who dont get laid off, but when entire studios get shutdown, those execs get the boot too.
I was looking at the Halo remake. And its taken 5 years. 5 years to do a copy pasta remake.
They're attacking a lot of pain point of UE 5 for the future, including hitching and traversal stutter. They detail a lot of optimization for it going forward and it seems like smart choices and on the right path imo. CDPR fucking whipped them or something because it seems every improvements is strangely tied to Witcher 4 deal.
Epic makes like $5 billion from fortnite every year. Insane that they couldnt hire developers themselves. I have no idea why people turn to hoarding money when they get rich. No one is asking you to giveaway your money, but at least make your own product better with some of that money. The 'deal' to switch witcher 4 to UE5 involved Epic taking on the salaries of the employees working on the RED engine and having them work on UE instead.
when it was first announced people were acting like CDPR would be laying off all their engine / tech staff, which was ridiculous.

Nah, its not the same thing. They have basically contracted out engine development to a third party studio.Your comment makes no sense.
They did hire them themselves - they hired an entire team at once. Everyone who contributed a high-level feature to RED engine is now working on features in a branch of UE5 that will one day fold into the main, public release. They're spending money to make their product better....
And I think you vastly overestimate how many extremely talented engineers there are in the world that can do this. there's no amount of money that will allow you to click your fingers and hire the very best of the best out of thin air - they're already employed and you'd be poaching them from somewhere. Do you think you can hire any random coder and have them re-write entirely new ways of calculating light bouncing around in real time?
And instead of poaching and splitting a team and asking them to move/dealing with complex logistics, why not just buy the whole team? They literally did the 'big money' move and your response implies they took the cheap way out.
They have basically contracted out engine development to a third party studio.
They are the one of the few companies that can pay out of their ass to afford those engineers.
Paying some guys whose primary job will always be CDPR engineers is not the same as having inhouse engineers who are fixing these issues.
That's not what I am doing at all, but clearly your reading comprehension skills are that of a 4th grader so I am not going to bother anymore. Good luck to you.I cant believe you're trying to argue that this was a bad move, you're dumb as shit
