The finale was an absolutely wonderful wrap up to an absolutely wonderful series.
But holy crap am I bummed it's over. I would love to see another series for the next summer, but I know it won't ever happen.

It was a really sweet, heart-wrenching finale. I'm glad we got a proper sendoff instead of it being canceled and leaving us hanging, but I really really hate how rushed and unfinished it feels. The behind the scenes issues that went on and likely caused this is really aggravating. There'll always be that "what if". What if Disney didn't screw up the schedule so much? What if Gravity Falls stayed on The Disney Channel? What if we had at least one more season?

I know the scheduling was a problem with a lot of fans but has anything close to official come out saying that was a big reason for a rift?
Disney has an article, here, where Hirsch talks a lot about being burnt out after just the first season. I know its coming from a Disney PR blog and that Hirsch likely wouldn't want to burn bridges but everything else I've seen about anger towards Disney really points at things that fans dislike (stretching the season for as long as possible, putting it on a channel that less people receive, merch).

I remember reading somewhere that the Time Baby and Co. were supposed to return for the finale? I guess not.
Maybe they were just predictions based on Blendin getting away? Speaking of I'm surprised he did nothing at all during the finale. Or maybe he was just well hidden in the background.

I gotta be honest. The second half of season 2 has really let me down. What happened to killing off a main character? Stan's sacrifice resolved within a minute? Sorry just felt so bad compared to what we got with season 1. It feels like the second half of season 2 was actually meant for season 3. I'm pretty sure Hirsch said that at one point.
I mean come on. They didn't explain anything about the portal or where it leads to. The build up to Mabel and Dipper splitting up was poorly handled imo. What happened to building up characters such as Pacifica and Soos? They were hardly in the season.

Dipper doesn't look too bad with Wendy's hat. But Dipper's hat honestly looks better on Wendy than Dipper.

This was a great finale. I loved the giant robot battle, Stan getting his mind erased with Bill in it, and the actual ending. And the two cops officially proclaimed their love for each other! (Which Disney can clarify was just platonic if called out on it). However, I did have some problems with it.
Considering how much the symbols in the circle have hyped up fans, the way they were used was a letdown. You'd expect all of them to be important characters, but Pacifica and Robbie in particular received little focus in the last, well, year or so. Their presence in the circle felt more like box checking than something that felt destined, like that there were plans for them to become part of the close-knit group the others formed but those scenes were cut. And maybe that's exactly what happened, though the fact that the show crew had previously expressed surprise at Pacifica's popularity makes me wonder about that. I don't so much mind that it didn't work, but that there wasn't much meaning to the circle besides fulfilling fan expectations.
Stan and Ford being petty in the circle was quite forced. The chase scene after the circle was broken just felt like padding, especially given how you'd expect Bill to end it much more quickly than he did. Lastly, I liked the scene where Stan gets his memory erased, but him regaining his memories so easily and so quickly felt like a big cop-out. That said, I'm not sure how to keep his memory erased without greatly weakening the birthday party and the send-off.
Of course, there are several unresolved questions, that have been mentioned earlier in the thread, but I'm fine with that. Out of all the un-shot Chekhov's Guns, though, it is disappointing that the President's Key was never used after its introduction episode. At least that and some other things were referenced in the ending credits.
Before watching this episode, I rewatched the first two parts, and I'd say the first is the strongest of the set still. This episode was good, but it couldn't stand up to the introduction of the chaos, Louis CK head+arm, and the madness bubbles.
As for the season overall, I definitely felt like things got weaker once Ford was introduced, but it was still good. As for the series, it was great, of course, and it will be missed. I expect that a lot of the appeal of the hidden messages and mysteries will be gone on rewatches, now that we know that many of them didn't actually lead to anything, but that's the nature of a show with mysteries.
I really hope we get more animated series of this caliber from Disney. Crossing my fingers for the DuckTales revival having good adaptations of certain Don Rosa stories.

I felt the build up to that moment was good. We saw several times this episode how mad Stan was with his situation and how everyone seems to love and appreciate Ford unconditionally. He was barely holding himself and the moment Ford threw that snide remark he couldn't control himself anymore.

I think
the Bill statue at the end is reference towards this. Plus he's speaking backwards as he is consumed by the flames in Stans mind, saying he'll be back.

To emphasize a bit more on it, the definite implication I think is that Stan was able to get his memories back because Bill did something to save his skin. The most obvious clue is reversing what Bill says in his 'death scene' is him chanting a spell that, "he may burn, but one day shall return." Following that, the Bill statue, sudden appearance of another 'strange' gap, Bill playing piano & singing towards the start of the episode his version of, "We shall see each other again someday!," and the like I think definitely hinted their plan to use the memory gun didn't completely work.
This said, I do agree that they resolved Stan's memory wiping far to quickly and neatly, my only real problem with the finale as it felt more of a cheap shot than anything worth exploring really.
This said, you can tell they ended it in a way that they tied up as many of the plot threads up as they could, but also left things open enough they could eventually hop back into it with something in the future if they wanted to. Finale was good, I wouldn't say great personally, but definitely not a bad finale and had some great moments, though funnily I also don't think one of the shows best episodes, but a good episode and not a bad ending at all, as weird as that may sound to say with my previous statement. It feels it resolves things a little to nearly with little consequence or too quickly, but it wasn't unsatisfying and there were definitely stand-out moments and no bad moments, and I did get some feelings welled-up at a few parts, and some good action-sequences/dark Bill moments as well.
I'll be sad to see it go, even if there's a chance of something or another eventually being made for it in the future (even if not for years from now), but the show will hold a place on my favorites somewhere.

Just curious, is the only explanation for the cause of the weirdness in gravity falls (what I considered to be the main mystery of the entire show) an offhand mention by Ford of a "weirdness anomaly (or whatever it was called)" that attracts weirdness there? That's kind of lame. I was hoping for a better explanation than that. Like maybe an alternate dimension was leaking through or something (or was that actually the case and the dimension ford went into to investigate was that? I kinda forgot lol)
I'm glad it wasn't explained. Rather that than them midichlorianing it.

, I agree with that. But I blame it on the lack of time, there was so much stuff going on in the finale, even an hour long episode wasn't enough for a proper build up. I loved the ending, it just felt slightly rushed.

I'm really going to miss the series even with its bizarre scheduling choices. I liked the finale because it was pretty much the best they could do with the limited amount of time they had. There are many things I would have loved to see the show do but I'm glad we got at least two seasons and that Alex ended it when he wanted. I'm sure I'll love whatever he does next.
Behind the Pines explained it IIRC. Alex said the birth mark is based upon a kid who had lots of acne and he would pretend to match the dots, and they came out to be like the little dipper. They did a fantastic job wrapping up a wonderful series. Some aspects being rushed or given less attention is the inevitable result of a series ending. I hope to one day see a full set for Blu-ray.
Agreed with the too soon bit.
The cowardice seemed about right to me, though. He's a hero for the kids, and he would stop at nothing to rescue Ford. But once he actually met him again, it went out the window due to his ungratefulness and lack of understanding. I think it worked well for him, personally.
Also, he even did the circle when a thanks was finally given, it was Ford that ruined it again for him.
Sibling rivalries can be some of the dumbest things. I know from first-hand experience (though as a kid, not a fifty+ year old man, lol).

Yes and no. Most are in agreement that the back half of S2 felt rushed. It's still a great show, just keep that in mind.

When I read this, it's certainly more understandable why he ended it. I'm certainly glad he put the effort into one more season. If it ended at Season 1 it would've been no better than the likes of Tron Uprising or Motorcity where it feels painfully unfinished.
