Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

Had this game since launch, finally made it past the stupid server room/tube puzzle -_-

Must have spent like 10 hours just wandering around.

Got a bit further and now stuck at the teeth part...I'm sure it will come to me, eventually.

Okay, I know we all hampered on the guy that called this Remaster lazy and then pointed to Unreal Engine fan art, but I do think, having beaten the game, there could have been a little more refining for this remaster. It's still a great game, and as a port it functions well, but there are a lot of tiny things problems that are introduced in the transfer. That said, it's undoubtedly the best way to play. The PnC controls on PC are incredible, and I'll jump around to get some of the dev commentary.

I hope they can do another game in this world... Grim Fandango is marvelous.

Finally finished the game after taking a break from it for a few weeks. That vault puzzle to get Meche out had made me quit, as I didn't know I had to insert the scythe too, and had been thinking that the dials were a little away from perfectly straight.

The game is charming and the characters of Manny, Meche, and Glottis are likeable, but the game does not hold well against modern gameplay standards. As a new player, it often felt bizarre to see the story jump from one place to another, while the cutscene in-between does not provide enough continuity. I'm guessing this is because there wasn't enough storage capacity in the 90s?

Dios mio, that fucking puzzle made my eyes bleed. That and
making the water drain by hitting the right square with the discarded anchor in the next room.
I love the game so much but sometimes it made me rage.

I finally finished the game this weekend. The writing, characters and setting are all great and is definetly what carries this game and made it such a classic, but the puzzles are a mixed bag. They're mostly good and well designed in the sense that they're built into progressing the narrative, exploring the world and interacting with the characters. On the other hand, the actual logic and solution to some of the puzzles aren't what I'd call great. But I don't think the difficulty is the problem per se, in fact I think its very important for puzzles to be challenging in order to not turn into chores, it's more the "framing" of them so to speak. Connecting the dots takes giant leaps of logic and intuition at times since many of the puzzles requires you to find items and/or interact with things that aren't located anywhere near or have any obvious connection to the puzzle at hand.

The game gets a 4/5 from me.

This game seems to have died down, but I just noticed a patch went out since it was considered to be buggy.

...Any chance of a price drop soon (PS4)?

I'm wondering if we'll see something for an upcoming sale or even PS+, though that sounds early

I just downloaded this game on PS4....18 years later and I'm playing it again. Wow....amazing. The graphics still look good, the music is fantastic...the puzzles are great (not too hard if you grew up with these adventures). Man I miss LucasArts...I miss oldschool adventures. I'm happy and sad at the same time.

Outstanding game. Now remaster the old Indy adventures, Day of the Tentacle, etc.
It's about time!

Has Grim Fandango already been announced for mobile? I was watching one of the most recent DFA documentary videos and noticed they have it listed on their production calendar.

Edit: It's in episode 19 at 58:27, in case anyone wanted to know.

Just finished it the other day. What a great and remeberable game it is. I struggled in parts though despite having played through it before many years ago, and some puzzles are a bit iffy. But all in all a wonderful experience.

I don't see any discount applied for the game on the French store, at least.
It's €14.99 at the moment, and already was when I bought it back in January.

Been playing it on Nexus 9, works pretty flawlessly. Only problem is that sometimes leaving the application resets the whole game. However, it takes 3 seconds to get back to the save, so no big deal there.

Been really enjoying it, but damn
stupid signpost
.

So I played through the game a second time today to listen to the commentary and I realized there's a second, albeit entirely useless and presumably unrelated, hint for the awful Year 2 ticket puzzle: At the end of Year 1, there's an unmissable conversation with the old dude
about Celso's wife where he says they left on a ship on a Tuesday in Week 6, tickets for 2
. What's bizarre about this is because it happens in Year 1, by the time you get to the ticket puzzle there's no way to re-hear this dialogue. Plus, even if you did somehow remember it and use it on the puzzle, the game won't let you get the item from that puzzle until you've got the regular pieces to "solve" it (as if you could claim such a thing as a solution). So they just built in a total redundancy, and one that's only barely less obscure than the original one.

What a weird game.

Man, this is a pretty bad port. I don't mean keeping the 4:3 aspect ratio, because that's actually ok since they didn't decide on a major graphics overhaul. The biggest issue is that the game is seriously bugged in some areas. It crashed on me twice already and I got stuck in the crane section in Year 3. I had to google to find out that the only workaround is to avoid pressing buttons during FMV sequences. What's worse is that Double Fine openly admitted to not planning any patches. DF also didn't use a chance to fix a lot of smaller problems, like some of the interactive items being too closer to each other or not being recognized properly. This can be a serious problem if you're playing without a guide since you can be discouraged from retrying after a failed attempt to use an item. Finally, the framerats drops in areas filled with more than 1 animated NPC.
Overall I'm disappointed with this remastered version and I don't think I'll be buying Day of the Tentacle SE when it comes out. At least not until it's on a major sale.

Finished the game - it's been a while since I've played it, but damn if it wasn't great to go through again.

Has anyone tried the developer commentaries for this game? Next time I will play the game with those turned on...

So this is my first time playing this game and I'm having a really hard time with it. I didn't grow up playing these types of PC adventure games so maybe I don't have the right mindset for it, but some of these puzzles are extremely vague and unclear that it would border on impossible, right?
Once I figure them out or look them up(which I have to do half the time), most of them end up making sense.
But some of them are just fucking weird and I can't imagine solving them unless I literally try every sequence or combination of items and things to interact with.

I just want reassurance that finding this game difficult isn't 100% me. That some of these puzzles could be clearer to even the most experienced adventure game players.

It's a tough game. I remember Grim taking me ages to complete back when it came out. Over a month at least. I've played through it three times now, and still get stuck at times.

Sorry, thread is too long for me to find this info:

How good is the vita version in terms of loading times and absence of bugs? I'm thinking about picking it up with the current sale.

Anybody have problems with these icons sticking on the screen? They originally got there after using the computer at the start of the game. Since then, I can't get them to go away. Loading a new area, changing graphics settings, reloading, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Interesting, I had the EXACT same issue. Sadly I just played the game that way. Using an AMD CPU and GPU.

The same happened to me. Had to start a new game.

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
I just downloaded it to the Vita yesterday getting ready for my 25hr flight next week. Thought I'd boot it up to see how it was and nek minnit, 2hrs gone by. I remember playing it on PC when it came out but wasn't really interested back then as I was hooked on Quake and UT. I fear I'm going to get stuck in some of these puzzles and may make for a stressful flight!

I love the atmosphere of this game already, but the animation glitches are really bad. I'm currently playing on Vita, but I'll switch to PS4 if it doesn't have these bugs. Manny's character model will just suddenly appear sideways in the middle of moving around. It's very awkward to look at and it's happening in every room/hallway so far.

Really? I gave it a test run on the Vita and played up until around the middle of Year 2 without noticing any animation glitches.

Weird, it's happening right off the bat for me. I'd hate to think I have to re-install because this Vita downloads so slowly.

Getting the platinum for this was pretty fun. I really liked the bee strike chant. Yeah the forest part was annoying, took me thirty minutes to find the entrance with the stupid signpost.
This and the fact that I'm a huge Monkey Island fan makes me hype for Tentacle and Full Throttle.

I'm about to finish year four and I agree with all of this. The forest might be the worst part of the game.

It's bugging the hell out of me, so I recorded it and made a gif. No one else gets this with the Vita version?

It does this everywhere while walking around.

edit- well closing the game and re-opening it for the 2nd time seems to have made it stop for now

I havr to say. I'm having a blast with the game. But finding out where to go next or what to do next gives me the hardest time. I spent what felt like 10 hours in that office to find out about the balloon and tube liquid thing.
