Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

The game was fantastic but pretty buggy. :/

I don't recall the original PC version to be buggy, just... Inefficient.

It was though. The installer was crap, the forklift section was impossible on newer cpus, and crashes were pretty common. It's the only old school lucas adventure game that I was able to complete just once.

On that note, it's really sad to have a remaster like this crash on a console... yesterday I lost quite a bit of progress, in a section of the game that I really don't care for. I guess I won't be completing the game... again.

Just finished.

Played this when it was originally released but I can't remember if I finished it or not. Went through without a guide, got stuck in a few places but managed to work out what I needed to do. A couple of the puzzles people seem to be having issues with I fluked (year 1 spoiler -> )
I hole punched the playing card before I even realised I needed to by messing around at the reception desk
. Great, great game, shame there'll never be a sequel.

Got "The Right Way" trophy, but no Platinum. Give me an excuse to replay and try to get the trophies I missed!

Anyone playing this on a early 2011 13" MacBook Pro, by any chance? I really, really, really want to buy this, but I'm afraid it's just going to run like crap and I can't find any impressions from people on a similar setup.

Edit: nevermind, found some. Won't work. Sad face.

Gamasutra.
Can anyone help ?
There's a bug where Manny can't move, played more than 5 hours, he's stocked in the elevator :/
I dont want to start from zero.
I'm in the chapter in his new cafe, finished it and have to go to the ship.
Not sure if you got an answer yet, but I got hit by this too. I used the trick of opening and using the ticket printer. Took a few tries but eventually it worked. I was about to lose an entire hour of progress!

Save often!

does the PC version have an "exclusive" pointer? I couldn't find anything like that in the ps version. I do prefer to play without it but I'm just curious since I saw that on some video.

If you finished and go the ship here's what happened
When you break th chain off the crane and drop it down the conveyor belt it goes down. Reverse the direction of the belt and it gets bundled up. Reverse again and it gets stuck on the hook. Reverse one more time and the crane pulls the ship off the edge of the world and back above the water.
yes I know what it did, I meant
how was the ship attached to that in the first place. I thought it was just a random conveyor belt used for the work they were doing there.

That's an old ship, not the one you came in on. It's been down there for a while.

man you gotta stop quoting my typos. :<

I know that it wasn't the LOLA, I thought I missed some story or information about that ship but I guess it's just an old ship that was placed there. also I don't think that you never notice that ship until you actually finish that puzzle?

SHIT just did a bunch of stuff in year 2, now Mannys stuck walking in place in slow circles at the bottom of the steps next to the wine barrel in the VIP lounge... anyone know a fix? Cant access inventory, cant pause, cant do anything!

Random question regarding Year 2 that isn't much of a spoiler at all I don't think:

In the tattoo dude's place, there's a small shelf you can open and Manny remarks that there's nothing in there. You can close and open it all you want. I just started Year 3... so what was with that shelf??

Happened to me as well, there's a bug there.
No definitive fix, but if you press X and wait eventually Manny will unstuck. On PS4 you could also try to press the PS button to pause the game and sometimes it helps to fix it.

You will discover that in year 4 =)

Btw sorry to bump one of my posts up but I'd really like to discuss this point of the story with the people who finished the game:

Finished it yesterday, amazing as I remember it, actually I could appreciate the writing much more than I did when I was 15 years old and the trophies helped me to find out a few surprises I didn't know about it. Now I just need to do a speed run with tank controls for platinum =)

Btw there's a point about the story which in the past I didn't put much thought into:
Domino and Hector, do they actually know that they can't leave the Land of the Dead for ''heaven'' even with real tickets?
Based on the dialogues in year 3 Domino seems to think that it's not possible, the end of the journey reserves hell for people like him so instead of going to hell he prefers to ''make the land of the dead livable'' on his own terms, robbing and disposing of good souls and getting rid of other bad people like him making them believe they can reach the Ninth Underworld anyway thanks to a fake ticket.
But eventually it's clear that Hector has made up a double scam reselling fake N9 tickets, he keeps the real tickets for himself with the hope he can leave the land of the dead in someway....but HOW? I don't think that this point is made clear by the game or I haven't noticed.

Does the game have a plot hole about how Hector plans to leave the LOD considering that he should know that he won't be able to use a ticket that doesn't belong to him, or did I miss something?

Dude you just saved me like 45 minutes, I wish there was a rep+ button!!!! I pressed X (I could tell manny was looking at something...) and then pressed the ps button. Didnt work right away, had to leave it for about 30-40 seconds but he eventually knocked loose and went to the closet, thanks!!!

This version has a lot of animation and graphical bugs. It's kinda insane how many there are.

Anyway. Completely stuck in year 2. I made some good progress this morning. But damn, I have run out of stuff to try. I had two ideas, but nothing came from it.

Happy that I could help =)
And yeah people with the same problem should avoid to continue to press X when Manny is stucked otherwise the animation loops and he continues to get stuck.
Hopefully they release a patch soon fixing this and other bugs.

The PS4 theme of GF is fucking awesome. It plays really gentle music from the game in the backround too, sounds and looks great. Better than all those other crappy PS4 themes.

I seem to have ran into a major bug on PS4.

In year 4:

at the casino after putting the white sheet over Charlie he exits the mens room wearing the toga, he puts out his arm so that Meche can take it, then she walks off on her own leaving him standing there doing nothing. The music continues but the game does nothing and i cant pause.

Seems to have worked on a third try after getting the hand in the snow chipper first. The snow chipper threw up another bug though, if i used the snow machine first and chipped the snow i could no longer pick the chipper up after putting the hand in it.

Yup agreed, I love all the different pictures and encountering those scenes in the game is great. The music is fantastic, I could literally just let the ps4 sit idle for hours with that tune going. If there was a secret way to play the rusty anchor song, it would be the best theme ever created (even better than Corn Love)

yup, I was stuck in there too. had to reload a save.

this remaster is indeed buggy as fuck, I also had text size swapped in the pause screen (was hilarious though) and the most frequent I had was probably Manny's arm being stuck in the "use an item" position. I can only think that they didn't test this game at all before launch.

I went down the ship before finishing the puzzle.
Glottis was chillin alive and well
I see, I totally missed that part then.

i played the game on my ps4 til the point
where you arrive at the bottom of the sea
now i wanted to continue on my ps vita, but after i download the cross save the game crashes with error code C2-12828-1. everytime.

anyone know what to do? =/

/edit
ah, nevermind
found this in the double fine forums from an admin.
"Our devs have already found the issue and this should be address in the next patch. Not sure what the estimate is, but it’s ASAP."

Sucks it's pre-order exclusive I really want a new theme. Would pay for the Grim Fandango one too. Just says Unavailable for me :(

I had the same problem..

I think there is a problem with the screen ratio..

you might try this..

- Delete game from vita (only way to delete a save).
- Redownload game on Vita.
- Start up PS4 version. Save the game with 16/9 ratio..
- Start the Vita version, and load the cloud save.

I´m not sure if it will work, but I have a theory about this working.. will try it later today, when I stop work.

you'll get used to them.

finished the game a couple of hours ago, really good stuff. I can see why it got that much praise and was very well received back in '98.

I liked this comment by Tim,

also this last piece of art, lol. they mentioned those drawings in the director's commentary,

So far I've avoided any seemingly game breaking bugs, well, till now that is.

Year 3
Underwater. When you follow the character with the light along the seabed. After they all go off screen after nearly completing a full circle, he's the only character who returns on screen. Glottis and Manny never appear barring some brief crazy glitching just off screen.

I have a couple saves at least but it's still pretty bad. Hopefully it doesn't reoccur when I restart it.

Can someone please tell me if the PS4 version supports Brazilian Portuguese language? I see the Steam version does, but cannot find anywhere if NA PSN version does as well.

amount of soft locks ive had are pretty crazy. The hybrid style of controls seems to be very problematic. Also, There's some things you cant examine/interact with properly with the hybrid controls.

I really wish the PS4 version had an option for point and click controls. There were multiple points in the game where I'd be trying to interact with something but the game would assume I was trying to interact with something else nearby. This is especially problematic when there's a bunch of interactive objects in a small area. There were a few times where I had to look up the solution to a puzzle only to find that the missing piece was something I'd attempted to interact with previously.

Tonight I lost ~5 hours of progress because of a bug.
I tried to open my inventory while Manny was clinging on to a conveyor belt underwater and the game locked up.
Bummer, but it should be easy to burn through those sections now that I know what I'm doing. Remember to save!

I'm kind of annoyed I've run into this bug that isn't fixing itself.

Manny doesn't actually run anymore, instead he stands in the neutral position and just "slides" across each of the maps. He even clips through certain things. There's no way to fix it as far as I can see and it's fucked me because I can't even get up the stairs and pretend to keep playing this way either.

I really don't want to have to start again :(

anyone know if this is fixable?

Anyone :(

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'm curious how Manny, Meche, and Domino look like with skin...

Lots of little glitches, got stuck in geometry a couple of times and some locks on PC. Such a fantastic game, though. I love the characters and the voice acting; I already miss them. I got stuck on a couple of puzzles (one for each of the first three years, actually), but managed to figure everything out myself during year 4 at least. I feel like an issue with a couple of the puzzles involve how hard it can be to discern specific parts of the environment and how close things can be making it hard to interact with specific points (sometimes Manny's head is too fixated on a specific point leading you to think there's nothing else).

WTH! The theme isn't available in Europe.

i googled for some pictures and all i have to say is, that there is a lot of disturbing grim fandango art work :<

ooh links please.

Grr got burned twice today on game breaking bugs lol. Love the story and characters. Can't get into how obtuse the puzzles are though.

Like at the dam I couldn't even see there were bones to pickup. Maybe that is one down side to playing in the remastered mode is that the interactable items don't stand out as much. Sort of like an old cartoon where one rock would colored differently and you knew that meant it was going to play a role in what happened next. Instead those items in remastered blend into the prerendered sets.

I got properly stumped last night, and had to cave and look at a guide for a hint in Year2.
Elevator, forklift, secret floor
. Got lucky in Year3 with acquiring a certain item and doing a certain puzzle. I love the obscurity of some of these puzzles, but some of them really could have used some very subtle hinting. But I do like the challenge so far.
Year4 now. So far so good :) Really enjoy all of the dialogue in this game. There is so much of "mess around" dialogue that didn't need to be there, but I really appreciate it. Everyone is voiced so well.

How big is the PSN file? I'll have to wait until I get the chance to hit up an internet cafe before I can buy this little gem. This will be my first time playing it too!

Don't think there is any other exposition around this. My view was Dom was pretty sensible and accepted he was stuck whereas Hector was a "little" unstable and harboured hopes of still escaping.

Dude from Grim Fandango Deluxe can hopefully pick up where they left off before the "remaster" was announced and finish all models.
they already had a couple of them redone with 3d fingers, more polys in heads and jacket and they had them working in the original Grim Fandango even.

Really weird why they didn't touch up the models at all.

Ran into a movement bug that caused me to slide instead of walk and move around in big circles.

hadnt saved for a few hours, and saved and quit the game reloaded and started the save, and it saved the fucking bug... now i have to start over...

heres what happened:

I really feel for anyone encountering these bugs, I was lucky and didn't have a single problem. Hopefully they'll have a patch out for you soon.

If there's one thing in particular I think they screwed up with the remaster it'd be not implementing autosaves. Sucks to have to restart the game.

you kill Hector? I mean how did bullets + water became poison.

?

The bullets all work on a "poison" basis, as they all contain sproutella, which causes plants to grow out of bone. That's the only reason they even work considering everyone is already dead in the first place. :p

In year 4 you shoot bullets (and thus sproutella) into the sprinkler system for the greenhouse. Thought that was pretty obvious.

well
I honestly didn't recall reading that sproutella = poison, I thought it was just plants growing inside of them/their bones, destroying everything.
I guess you can picture the bullets being full of some sort of liquid, and it makes more sense like that. I was thinking more at seeds or similar stuff that just grows when it's in contact with bones.
