Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

Encountered a game breaking bug earlier today myself, got stuck in the door to the communication room right at the beginning of the game.

Luckily I'm only 20 mins in otherwise I'd have been a bit more annoyed. Any other major ones I should be aware of? I'd like to save my game before these points to avoid issues in the future.

I really feel for anyone encountering these bugs, I was lucky and didn't have a single problem. Hopefully they'll have a patch out for you soon.

If there's one thing in particular I think they screwed up with the remaster it'd be not implementing autosaves. Sucks to have to restart the game.

i started over from a save 3 hours previous... fortunately doing it all once already made it extremely fast (well twice, i played the game once when it came out originally, never finished it though... that was a long time ago so i forgot most of the puzzles lol)

plus i was actually able to snag a trophy i would have missed because i triggered
VIP glottis before having him sing the rusty anchor song, lol)

SO uhm, in year 2
I never got the VIP pass when I got the ticket printer from Charlie.

Am I screwed?

Spoiler tagged it just in case

nvm got it figured out

Just finished the game, and really enjoyed. However, I played through the game with tank controls and the trophy didn't unlock, so am a bit bummed out by that. I had even changed the controls in the options and restarted a new game when I bought it to be sure. Shame.

Edit: never mind. It appeared after syncing the trophies. Just didn't get a notification for it. Weird!

Man, after completing Grim I've been searching for another great adventure game, but nothing I'm trying is measuring up. I just keep chasing that high, but it's starting to look like nothing in the genre has topped Grim.

Depends what you liked about the game. Grim's puzzles are abysmal in my book. There are plenty other games which have a great setting and charismatic characters.

The world and its well-written/acted characters is what I liked best about it. I also preferred Grim's simpler controls and interface over that of most traditional point n' click games.

While plenty of adventure games have cool worlds, decent writing, and good puzzles, I haven't come across one yet where everything gels together as well as all of Grim's world-building elements did.

For reference, I really like Amanita's games as well despite having no dialog. The art styles and worlds in their games really appeal to me.

Apart from the 'classics' like Maniac Mansion, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle etc did you try
Monkey Island 3?
Depnoia?
Broken Age?
The Book of Unwritten Tales? (a sequel was released, holy smokes, I didn't even knew)
Larry 7?
Discworld?
Machinarium?

Hi guys, I'm stuck in year 3 and I'm not sure if I'm just missing a piece of the puzzle or skipped an area.

I am at the point where
I've got Glottis, Meche and the angel kids at the beach on the NE end of the island. I dragged the ship up with the crane and seems to be waiting to leave. If I approach it, Manny says he can't board without the others
. There was a cutscene when
the boat was being dragged up with the crane
, but I think it got cut off.
One second the boat was breaking surface, and then there was a weird stutter and then Manny and crew were all standing on the beach
. I might have missed info there.

When I talked to Glottis there was some mention of a
reef
and getting past it. I have no idea what's even required or where I'm supposed to go. I can't
board the ship
, and when I go through all the previous areas nothing novel seems to be happening -
Domino is sitting at his desk and won't talk, the lamp guy is still mining
, etc. I did a quick faq search and all they say is that after the cutscene I should be
at a submarine
so I am wondering what went wrong there.

Any ideas how to proceed from here would be really welcome!

I'm pretty sure the reef puzzle will trigger the next part.

well
I honestly didn't recall reading that sproutella = poison, I thought it was just plants growing inside of them/their bones, destroying everything.
I guess you can picture the bullets being full of some sort of liquid, and it makes more sense like that. I was thinking more at seeds or similar stuff that just grows when it's in contact with bones.

Major Year 4 Spoiler:
How did you think Salvadore killed Olivia? He had a suicide sproutella capsule in his teeth that he sprayed on her face. Also Manny talking about how he can't touch the sproutella that spilled on the ground because it'd kill him.

Yup and now I just can't be bothered. It's so annoying.

I was never able to overcome the
walking around the boat underwater
bug in Year 3 even after redoing the entire
boat anchor
puzzle and going to the area from scratch.

My advice would be to not select the 'Can we tag along dialogue option?'' because you can get stuck infinitely off screen. Do all the dialogue options except for that one and you can still progress and get the achievement.

100% finished the game and I feel sad now as I enjoyed it so much.

The tank controls were a pain for a while. I can't wait for Broken Age and Day of the Tentacle Special Edition.

Having some problems with saving (PS4).

It started to happen around the end of year 1 and now the beginning of year 2.

It gets stuck on 66%, then 100% and takes ages to actually save. I'm worried it is going to corrupt and I'll lose all my data. I've got around this by pressing the PS button (seems to help) and then re-entering the game with the PS button.

It's something related with your connection or cloud servers. Press PS, go to Settings and disconnect the console from the net. Back to the game, save and connect the console again (if you want).

Welp, this just happened to me on Vita. It just kept saying couldn't save for about 7-8 minutes and then it seemed to save because the load screen had an updated timestamp and screenshot of where I was.

Load up the game today, and it starts at the beginning I was like, hmmm weird. I went to load game and selected my save and was greeted with "There is no saved data" Fucking great it's corrupt. I think I'm done with the buggy POS

While playing last night, I ran into the glitch where Manny gets stuck in the elevator in the High Roller's Casino. I was pissed. Had to restart from my previous save file and lost about an hour of play. This was on the PS4 version btw.

The suggested solution (to pull out the ticket printer) didn't help me at all. Tried multiple times.

I guess that teaches me to save more often. I have to say I've seen a lot more glitches in this remaster than I do in most new releases I play.

Playing this for the first time, I'm doing tank controls. You know, once you get used to it then it's not the worst thing in the world, but good lord sometimes it's frustrating lol

mattp

the tank controlsd are fine. i seriously never understand when people can't adjust to them in games
BUT, with that said. they are worse in this game than most because of how god damn slowly manny turns
but more importantly, what makes them so FUCKING frustrating at times, are the areas where the game "helps out" and like automatically redirects manny towards a door or something as you walk by. god dammit it fucking annoys me so much

Finished it again after soo many years. Incredible game, in my top 10 ever.

Voice acting in this game is matched by no other games I've played.

son of a bitch
i finished the game and the tank controls trophy didn't work

If you're playing on PC, there's a save file on Steam you could download to get it.
Speaking of PC save files, anyone have on for PC in Year 2? I accidentally missed the "Come to see how the big boys play, eh Manny?" achievement. If not, I'll just have to replay. :)

Got the platinum tonight.

Was surprised to see that the platinum wasn't ultra rare.

That either means that approximately 5%+ of people who played it loved it, or that it is largely selling to the enthusiast crowd.

Really looking forward to day of the tentacle.

Thought about picking this up today, but tbh reading through some of this thread got me kinda nervous with all the game-breaking stuff people were running into. Then I saw

which looked like they fixed some of the big ones (e.g., elevator, which came up a lot in this thread). That said, I am getting a lot of hard crashes on the PC version - three so far. I can't tell if it's due to me alt-tabbing or just a coincidence. More specifically i'm dragging the mouse out full-screen-windowed mode and clicking the browser on my other monitor.

It is true that it's rather easy to speed-play up to the same point again from your last save, but it's still pretty annoying.

I'm still seeing a lot of animation glitches on PC. Olivia starts to shake when you first talk to her, for example. It even happens during the Grim Fandango poem.

Right there with you. I'm giving myself the benefit of thirty minutes to an hour per stumping conundrum... After that I look up the answer.

Fucking
wine barrel shenanigans.
Double fuck that
elevator lift puzzle

Finished. Glad to see my love wasn't just nostalgia. I didn't really remember any of the puzzles, but none of them seemed terribly obtuse. It's a Tim Schafer game, so you need to pay attention to dialog.

Having just played through Ceville and Unwritten Tales probably had me in the right frame of mind to blow through it,

Encountered a really strange bug last night.........

On the
island prison place, I was able to reach Glottis without letting down the chain on the conveyer belt first. I just rode the conveyer to the end and it played the FMV of the chain going down.
The FUNNY thing was, the FMV was super low-resolution, looked like the original, un-remastered resolution. I guess some of the original assets are hiding in the file?

completed this game for the first time today. I had never gotten round to playing it the first time it came out but what an absolutely amazing game! I adore the setting and characters.

Yeah, I finished it for the first time a week or two ago. Grim has some of the best writing/characters in any game IMO.

I just finished this tonight and thought it was great. As I figured out the games logic I got better at working out the puzzles as the game progressed. Every now and then I'd hit a wall which was frustrating such as
finding and going up a ladder so you can pour hot coffee on the backstage performers to make them flee.
Its time to put the game away and come back to it in a year or so with the commentary on this time.

Just finished it. Loved the world and the characters, it held up extremely well even today, can't imagine how blown away people were back in '97. But man, fuck some of those obtuse puzzles. Stuff like
guessing the ticket day/race/week for the photo in rubacava or grinding the skeleton arm for the spilled sprout material in El Marrow
was just fucking horrible. Definitely moments I yelled out "Really?? That's the solution?!"

Despite that, I very much enjoyed it and have had the world stuck with me for days.

Finally finished it, easily deserves all of its recognition. Just wonderful, will definitely be in rotation for replaying- especially after knowing the answers to some seriously inspired puzzles. (Fucking
scare the weapons guy with a pidgeon note? Lengue card or the tattoo one?
Oi. Just incredible and frustrating and great at the same time.
