gt4 does 1080i ingame

Exactly...i'm referring to the "misc. person on misc. forum said such and such, so it MUST be true" stance. Simply "in-game" was all that was confirmed, and it would not have been impossible for it to have been either b-spec, or photo mode, or reply mode or whatever other caveat. Geez, it's like it's illegal to think first and try to weigh the plausibility of certain things before going batshit insane with bliss. Anyway, i'll not derail this any further...personally i'm very pleased and amazed that this is true, and whenver i do get an HDTV, GT4 will definitely be the first game I try on it.

Well after posts were available linking to the forum where people verified 1080i in all modes, and the official link were provided there were plenty of people making prickish remarks to the initial guy doubting him.

If it were in photo or B-spec mode only it would have said specifically on the GT4 homepage in some form. Granted not many here outside of a couple can read Japanese, but the people who can including myself would have made mention of a fact like that.

Even now some idiots are still waiting for IGN and Gamespot to "break" this big story before believeing it :lol

I'm not trying to single you out btw, just replying to your comment.

maskrider, what's your setup like? I'd like to read impressions from someone in possession of an HDTV. I'd also like to correct those suggesting this is some quasi-1080i configuration. You're wrong -- this is the real deal, baby.

It's the new one. I prefered the 90s model. Still a cool car but too much popular between certain people I dislike in my country. :)

This is great. I wish there were more progressive scan PS2 games. Hopefully this is in the PAL game.
? 1080i isn't progressive, it's interlaced, but i get what you mean.

Hahaha, you know what's the best part about all of this? People who used to crack on the game's hi-res screenshots and said "it'll never look like that on your TV" must be feeling so incredibly stupid at the moment it's probably hurting them. :lol :lol

God I've never been this excited for a game.

LOL that is funny :lol

I don't know many 1080 line displays at all. So its likely people are running it on 720p displays tops. Certainly thats the highest res for an LCD/DLP projector currently.

So it'll be downscaling 1080i to 720p. It'l still look better than 480p, but you won't get the full benefit

This means nothing to me because I play all my games through a RPU adater. But I haven't touched this series since Gran Turismo 2, I think I will give this a try.

I think there was a special level of disbelief/derision towards him because he is/was a jr. member. Do you honestly believe that if any regular member with tag and or high post count would have been treated like an idiot like he was? There were a lot of condescending remarks, his only reply was if you didn't believe it you were a hater. I'm surprised he did not say something ruder (which was certainly warranted).
First of all, I'm happy for cobragt4 (and all the others who have been waiting for this game) that it does run at 1080i in A-spec mode. Hopefully you all have the home theater gear you need to take full advantage of the game!

Yeah, he got a "special level of disbelief/derision" because he was a junior member. Given the claims, the disbelief was perfectly reasonable...and given the fact that he continued to cite another person's information in another forum over and over again as his evidence, you're damn right I was going to put him on notice. I don't speak Japanese and don't follow the minutiae of GT4 -- I was reacting to some well-formed doubts from long-time members in this forum about his claims, and expected better evidence to come forward. The thing you keep ignoring is that this particular junior member has over 100 posts, ALL OF WHICH CONCERN GT4. I suspected that he was a viral marketer/hype starter, and although it sounds like he may just be obsessed with this particular game, I still have some doubts.

Now that the game is out, he's been validated -- good for him, but it doesn't mean that I'm happy with the process. It's no different than math class: If the teacher hands you a problem, you hand it back with no work shown but stating the answer is 4, and the correct answer does turn out to be 4, what would YOU think?

My high definition LCD TV didn't like GT3 at all (at least through the high-def component input, it ran fine through the normal component input). It had serious ghosting issues and every once in a while the screen flashed in the middle of a race. I always thought it was a progressive scan title (and that the HD inputs couldn't handle 60 fps for some reason) but according to Faf it isn't?

Anyway, I hope GT4 solves these problems. I don't have any progressive scan PS2 games to test with (I've just watched progressive scan movies with it) and I don't have component cables for my Gamecube.

I'm skeptical of how the image quality is going to look on my 57" widescreen HDTV, since the few PS2 games I tried playing on it in progressive scan (Jak 2 & 3, R&C 2 & 3, Prince of Persia) had so many jaggies that it made them look a lot worse than in 480i on my normal 20" flatscreen TV, where the jaggies aren't even noticable. (I used the same component cables for each setup.) Does running in 1080i have any effect on how jaggy the game looks?

higher resolution means more pixels to work with, so less need for antialiasing and fewer jaggies to boot. you should be able to spot differently between a 480i/p game and a 1080i. if you're a computer gamer, its roughly akin from switching between 640x480 to 1280x960.

any word on frame rate and graphic fidelity at 1080i? did they lessen detail or anything to acheive a stable frame rate?

http://www.thrillinghill.com/gallery/album217

Ok, I didn't think photograps would be enough, but these pretty much confirm what we speculated. It runs the same horizontal resolution in both modes, and increases only vertical resolution.

Of course I'll still verify the exact VRam settings when I'm back at work in a week or so, but right now it looks like it's running 640x960I (or perhaps 640x1080I).
Which would also mean the framerate/details should be identical in both modes.

Yeah...that's insane.

Faf makes it sound like this is "easy" to implement, since he's sure it doesn't take any kind of hit. How come more game don't have this option?

BTW, I read before that when you drive cars where you can see the driver only 2 cars are allowed in the race. Is this still true in the final version?

this is such awesome news! i was soooo let down when there was a rumor about the game not doing 480p anymore. now i can play it on my 36" direct view hdtv in all its glory! sweet!!!

"Dcharlie - So how big a difference is there between the 480p and 1080i modes? Shogmaster seems to think there isn't much, I would like your opinion since you are viewing on a nice projector."

it's an LZ-1 - actually, i think it might be doing some trickery for the 1080i mode now i think about it.

May get an LZ-2/3 tonight, so that might change things! :)

Do you have to ask when most games don't support Progressive Scan or 16:9 which are even easier to implement?

how the fuck1?!!? Jesus are the cars made out of 10 polys each? How the hell are they reaching smooth framerates with graphics that look like that?

As far as I remember, there was never even a rumor that the game would run in progressive scan, much less 1080i! None of the demos had prog scan, and this thread is the first I've heard of the support for it.

I can't wait to see what GT4 final version is going to look like on my (regular, flat) TV. Burnout 3 (PS2) for example, definitely has better image quality than the latest GT4 demo that I have. However, they obviously pulled some magic at the last moment with this final version.

Jeeezzzzz cobragt already said he dropped the issue what the hell are the rest of you arguing over? :lol

Anyway, 1080i confirmed is hot! I don't care for GT games, but I'm buying this to play on my buddys 57" widescreen!

Is that a Sanyo PLV-Z1?

If so then it only has a native res of 964x544. It would be scaling the 1080i image to its native res.

The Z3 should do a better job of resolving the 1080i image since it has a native res of 1280x720 (720p spec.)

I Look forward to reading your findings with the new projector.

goddamn. i'll have to pick a copy up this week. polyphony can code some fucking graphics. imagine what they'll do with gt4 mobile. :o

Fucking sold ! I just hope that the PAL release gets the 1080I treatment considering our TV's cost 5X as much as they do anywhere else.

Just imagine what these guys could do for the PC, let alone a shitty PS2. They are the fucking gods.

yup - that's the one, and i think that's what it has to be doing.

Debating what to do - might hold off for a while.

This thread really wants me to laugh in the face of whoever it was, all that time ago, that started trying to rag on GT4 and started the infamous background-photoshops because of a background bitmap in a screenshot. I'm sure at this point they're sitting in a corner, curled in the fetal position, vainly clutchin their S-controller, foaming at the mouth, and sucking on the USB connector trying to convince themselves that Forza is still the game to buy.

Stings don't it bitches??!!

um... no, i'm giving impressions!!! ;)

(I didn't do the photoshop, but i did think point out the weird "join")

Wow, no one has taken the time to apologize to cobragt, I'm shocked. GAF at it's finest. I guess there were a lot of haters on here.

Yeah, for real though. I couldn't agree more. I hate when this kind of shit happends. The guy was right all along, and got no props or apologies from anyone. Do you think he would have came here coming off as arrogant as he did if he didn't know what he was talking about? I don't.

After viewing these screen shots, can we finally agree that PS2 is more powerful then the Xbox when coded properly?

More powerful? No -- it simply isn't, no matter how strenuously one were to wish it so. With that said, however, the PS2 is clearly capable of standing up to the Xbox, demonstrating how negligible the disparity is between the two systems. There won't be a racer on the Xbox as graphically impressive as GT4. That says volumes.
