GTA V has gone gold.

I love IV myself but I wouldn't call it the best GTA game. I still say San Andreas holds that title. I think V will blow them both away. But there were things that I really loved in IV that were inevitable to come to the series anyway. Like a cover system. I was so excited to see that introduced. Physics. NPCs reacting realistically to bullet hits among other things. And all the little details like the way tires get blown out, doing a donut long enough would even burn out your tires, flying out the windshield during hard crashes, bullet cracks in the windshield, the explosions at the time, all the little things that increase the immersiveness and improve the action. It's only going to be improved in V.
 
The things that GTAIV dropped from San Andreas (and the stupid justification for dropping them) used to bother me, disappointed me really. But, since replaying it, the things that really bother me are mission variety. The mission variety is terrible in IV, almost every mission is the same action by the user, and the few that don't still end up being reduced to something much simpler.

GTAIV has less mission variety than San Andreas and Vice City for sure, but I'm even willing to go out and say that IV has less variety than GTAIII. I've been shocked at how bland the missions are, that even the good ones -- the ones that I remember fondly -- aren't as good.

THis is pretty similar to how I feel. I feel like the things that were obvious improvements in IV over San Andreas, like firing mechanics, cover, physics, and so on, are things that advanced along side the rest of the gaming industry. The physics in IV are very impressive, but for me, those technological leaps wear off quicker than good mission variety and a lot of things to interact with in the world.
 
GTA IV was the biggest heartbreaker for me this gen easy. I put collectively probably 300 hours into GTA 3/Vice City/San Andreas. Not even 30 hours into GTA IV and I had a lot less fun doing it. Overrated is hard to judge, but it's far and away the biggest disappointment.

I know we have talked about it before; just didn't think it was on the level of a 5 at all. As for the game not letting you catch people until they wanted you to; I have shown a few different times some missions where you could do interesting things to stop a chase, but I get it. The scripted sequences were actually fun for me, as they weren't scripted just to be scripted. Be it a cop road block, a ramp to hit, a line of dialogue to hear..it all was done for a reason.

Yours is as an individual voice. You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm talking about the consensus surrounding the series as a whole. Recent history hasn't been as kind to IV as it has certain installments that precede it.
 
The fact that Gay Tony is the last GTA-related product that they made makes me hyped for 5. It seemed like they really found their groove this gen with that expansion. I want everything about that to carry over into GTA5. From the characters to the fantastic mission variety (something GTA4 and TLaD lacked).

Sorry, but using the term consensus in this sense would give the advantage to myself, not your opinion of it being "the most overrated game of the generation." That is FAR from the consensus and is the exact opposite.

Yeah, that was the problem. Missing features. But me personally, in each GTA game I've always completed the game 100% then just did random shit, causing chaos. Even the features in SA were cool but nothing to keep me coming back ALL THE TIME. Like truck deliveries, you just drive from one location to another with cops chasing you. It's not like VCS where they added drug dealing and made it relatively in depth. Sometimes there's shootouts or ripoffs. They attempted adding gang wars in TLAD and Drug Wars in TBoGT which were all pretty much the same as vigilante missions in IV. You drive to a location, with allies in the DLC, and blow everyone away. It's cool but all the same. Also, in TLAD your gang members can level up if they survive but at high levels they all die anyway, it needed work. Hopefully the crew thing in V really improves on this. Another problem I had with those missions in IV was, you can do 50 of them and they will always take you to the same 5 or 6 locations. It's a huge city and they only allow these missions to take you to the same 5 or 6 spots. They should somehow randomize locations so it's more immersive. And add more variety then just drive here, kill everyone.

I've been playing IV recently as well and yeah, many of the missions are similar. Drive here, take this guy/these guys out. I don't really have a huge problem with it because I love shooting missions but compared to SA there were no really memorable missions. Three Leaf Clover was great but if you really think about it, it's almost the same as the others with more people to shoot. Still, it was epic. I think even Houser said he wants V to have more missions like that. With this heist stuff, there's no doubt they will be more in depth.

I think GTAIV was a good game, but I think he's right -- it is an easy contender for most over-rated game of this generation.

I'd wager if we started a "Most over-rated games from this generation," GTAIV would be one of the contenders on the list. I wouldn't put it at most over-rated (that is a special place in hell for me -- Uncharted 3), but it'd be on my top 5, and probably a lot of other people's.

It is on here, no doubt about it. I just don't see how a game that still gets a bunch of play 5 years later is so overrated. I get the criticisms of the game, trust me..I don't get how it is that overrated.

I think if you maybe weigh up GTAIV with the DLC packs it improves it a bit but it was a bit poor compared to San Andreas due to a lack of content and scale.
From what we know of GTAV it looks like it's going to give us a real reminder of SA in terms of that scale and exploration of the map along with all the detail in the game.
GTAIV seemed a bit bland at times. I didn't feel a great urge to explore as I did before. In fact in the earlier GTA games I used to get in a car and try and explore as much as I could right away. I'd try and find ways to cross the barricaded bridges and tunnels. I remember in GTA3, I flew the Dodo plane into the baseball stadium.

I wouldn't mind a shorter, tighter story in GTA V, at least to complete the story, with other missions being an optional as just part of being a criminal and living that life.

Perhaps on that's video forums that's true, but do you realize how little that represents the consensus of the entire market of people who play video games?

If GTAIV was as poorly received by the "community" as you claim it is, then why are so many still purchasing new copies of it?

There's still going to be a ton of shit the game does wrong in the end, but that won't stop 90+ "journalists" giving it a perfect score.

A lot of the things that some say are "huge faults," I personally don't give a damn about. I acknowledge that GTA IV lacks mission variety. I acknowledge that a lot of the missions are overly scripted, especially the car chase missions where the enemy car apparently has a force field around it and gets unlimited magical speed boosts every time you come withing 20 feet of their rear bumper. I acknowledge that the driving controls and physics were touchy and came with a steep learning curve.

It doesn't bother me that GTA IV is lacking missions variety, because I enjoyed the missions as they were. It didn't bother me that lots of San Andreas' bells & whistles didn't carry over to GTA IV, because a lot of those bells & whistles were wasted on me anyway.

Cool, I had no problem with the driving controls as I loved driving in GTAIV and am a boss at it. Let's talk about no mid-mission checkpoints? Or let's talk about no unlockable stuff really.. or no way to spend your money. Or play a fun diversion? And no I'm not talking about darts or bowling or armwrestling. The soundtrack isn't that great compared to older titles. You cannot customize any vehicles. You have no garage ( but can park 2 cars outside your home ).

The fact that most of the 'choices' you have to make in the game have zero impact. Man I could go on and on. There are a ton of things why GTAIV is worse than most GTA3 era GTA games in my opinion. It just lacks fun mostly.

I think you'll be pleased.

I have read interviews with Rockstar stating they realize not everyone finished GTA IV, for whatever reason, and that V will be 'shorter,' at least the main game, but mission variety will be through the roof.

I think a lot of people here and elsewhere are underestimating how much of a paradigm shift the whole 'planning and executing heists' mechanic will be. It has the potential to feel revolutionary while playing, and I will afford Rockstar the trust to pull it off. Can't wait to return here after finishing the game to see the miserable haters try and explain how much they hated V and how in no way does it improve on IV's supposed inadequacies.

Will make for some entertainment toilet reading at the very least.

Also yes, sometimes a tighter script is better. You must not have played many games or seen a lot of movies.

My only real problem with GTAIV (outside of the shooting) was the horrible lack of check-points during missions; the final mission in particular was a pain because of this. Thankfully that was something they fixed with the Episodes from Liberty City - so I'm not concerned about that at all with GTAV.

I didn't see the leaked vids, I was spoiled enough with the achievements

RDR is one my favorite games on this gen, so if we can ride horses in GTA V...it would be the surprise of the year.
 
I might be wrong but don't we already know what the first mission is from previews? or was that a different mission?
 
Maybe just me but if the length of the story is about the same as previous GTA games then each character's story would surely end up being quite short?

I could be wrong but each characters story is kind of like one long connected story. They are all connected and it isn't like a complete all of Franklins story, now move on to Trevor's story.

Wut. San Andreas took me like 60 hours and GTAIV was like 45-50. Plus the narrative will intertwine much more than, say, GTAIV did. ~10 hours for each character's side stories + ~15-20 for the "trio" story is more than enough time. And that if the narrative is even truly split up in that way.
