Thor 2 has no excuse for the weak villain because it's no longer an origin story focused on the hero (and Thor 1 had a fine villain in the first place), it should be easy to have focus on the villain too. This film was juggling the origin story for a whole team, like Avengers 1 it gets a pass for a simple villain.
I hate the climax of Iron Man. Almost ruins the film for me, at that point I just decide that Stane is fucking crazy and didn't actually have a follow-up to his plan. He just wanted Tony dead. I mean yeah he thought he could get away with it if he killed EVERYONE on-site but that was never going to happen. One SHIELD agent escapes and its over for him - and even if they didn't, Fury would never let that slide especially if Stane killed Coulson.
Like I mentioned, it's more the doing than their motivation for me. Iron Monger had a cool paralysis thingy, Loki has his illusions. Gimme cool gimmicks, I like flashy stuff. Ronan had a hammer, meh.
'Tony went crazy and made this wacky armor to try and kill everyone! But I stopped him with my superior StaneTech, which has conveniently gone public! BUY WAR BONDS TODAY AND SLAPAJAP'

Saw it last night and loved it. Best movie this year, better than Xmen and a lot better than Captain America (which was good but gets a little overrated IMO). Honestly I think it's the best movie Marvel has ever put out. I just loved the humor and writing, which is something that helps the pace and makes the movie move along so much more than your standard action fare because the characters were all interesting in their own way, and even the final action set piece (which is where I think Cap fell on it's face) never felt like dragged on or got too cliched. The use of music was amazing as well. Never thought I'd see an action/comic book movie play some Jackson 5. It's the first movie in a very long time that has me wanting to watch it a 2nd time in theaters rather than just waiting for BluRay.
By the point that he's forced to step into the armour, the idea is that he'll kill the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Pepper, and Iron Man. By that point, he can claim plausible deniability. It's obviously a point-of-no-return for him, but he was sort of backed into a corner anyway, S.H.I.E.L.D. would have just arrested him.
I like Obadiah as a villain. Most MCU villains have come across as generically maniacal (Ronan, Malekith, Red Skull), but Obadiah is just a control freak in a more intimate capacity, one that makes sense. Tony's existence is an attack on Obadiah; his arrogant playboy lifestyle is an affront to Obadiah's silent graft for the company, and his later ambitions of heroism and disarmament are an affront to Obadiah's very livelihood. The best villains tend to have a lot on the heroes.

It woulda been cool to see North voicing a character in a major production but I get what Gunn was going for and sounds like Cooper did a great job characterizing Rocket.
It's seems funny to say, but Vin's voice work for Groot is great. Even with saying the same three words over and over, you can hear the differences in those words at times. Great work.

I remember someone, probably Eccleston, said there was a good amount of Malekith footage cut from the movie. From checking out the deleted scenes there was some Hogun stuff removed too.
My report: saw it last night at a casino/resort at a Native American reservation. The theatre (which is awesome) was not even half full but this place is kind of out of the way for the most part.
The crowd was maybe 55/45 male/female. There were actually a ton of females there, most of them looked to be 16 to 20. Kind of surprised me.
The movie went over very well with the crowd, everyone laughing at the jokes and the females "awww"ing over Groot or anytime one of leads actually says something nice.
For me I thought it was great, if people think this is a "B" movie than I don't care to watch "A" movies anymore. Hope everyone has as much fun as I did. Can't wait till the next one!
Just came back from the theatre. Quite enjoyed it.
The best and worst thing about it is that I watched it as Marvel trying to fit this peg a group of crazyyy idiots into a square 'common blockbuster' hole.
Their response was 'Aw, we'll do it the way we want to anyway, lulz'. I appreciate the honesty at least.
Loved it! Such a fun film. Met my expectations and then some. Absolutely loved every scene with the Milano and any other ship(s); they all looked so cool. The soundtrack was even better than I could have imagined too. Can't wait for mine to be delivered tomorrow, plus I'm going to see this again!
Edit: BTW I also managed to get one of the nice limited IMAX posters before walking in. Too bad I rolled it up then creased the hell out of it when I put in under my arm :/
Yeah, I'm seeing it again tomorrow too. It's been a while since I've really wanted to see a movie in theaters more than once. Hell I don't even know if twice is enough.
Humor and heroes were spot on... the villains were... not great. Plotting was iffy at first, but comes together. Other than the three-way chase on Xandar, the action left me cold. The "nakama" power was a little rushed and awkward (I don't think I've ever heard the word "friend" uttered as many times in a film billed as a sci-fi action blockbuster), but easily forgiven. The whole film works wonderfully within itself, but doesn't quite fit the rest of the MCU yet.
That was a really weird Marvel film. It had all the standard Marvel framework and build up, connecting fiber to the larger universe, etc, but so much of the content and tone is just wacky as fuck. Gunn has a really quirky but effective sense of humor, and I think it was helped by the casting being really, really good too. Great dynamics, lots of charisma. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and the art direction was pretty cool for a lot of the ships and alien stuff.
Where it falls short would be in the cinematography mostly. It felt really weak, and it wasn't just the bad action, but most of the scenes in general just lacked any sort of real visual flair. It definitely had this TV feel to it. Some of that actually went well with the style of comedy employed in the film though. Maybe not intentionally though.
Good music, fun characters, looks cheap, Ronan was a reaaaaaaaally lame wuss. Overall pretty enjoyable for the first cosmic Marvel movie. Winter Soldier was way better though!
Really fucking enjoyed this one. It's not perfect, but the cast and their interactions makes this the most enjoyable Marvel film to date. What I really enjoyed is how it didn't even feel like a 'Marvel film'. I'm really excited to see these guys interact with the other Avengers at some point, but I'm most excited for GotG 2.. this part of the Marvel Universe is just so much damn fun.
I don't see many superhero movies in theaters and I don't like the superhero comics either despite a dalliance with them in my youth. Last superhero in theaters I saw were Iron Man 1 (good), Nolan Batman 2 (very good) & 3 (meh), Avengers (very good) and now GotG. I've also seen a couple of the MCU films at home, also checked out Man of Steel because of the controversy (it's as horrible as suggested) but I give a wide berth to the recent XMen/Wolverine, last Spiderman and the MCU TV Shows. That's my background. So...
GotG is really very good; I'm surprised they managed to pull it off. GotG is basically Avengers with more endearing characters (despite being much less famous) and a better soundtrack. They did all this while giving only Peter Quill a proper origin story, leaving all the others to be delivered in exposition — expect Groot who got nothing at all. Ronan was pretty generic as the audience had no context for his Kree stuff. It hurt the characterization a bit as it's hard to get the sense Gomora is the most dangerous assassin in the universe and that Drax is a very strong fighter without their back stories. Ronan barely had to break a sweat (so actually it makes sense they didn't delve into his extra comic book powers that were developed over many comic arcs and adversary battles). Bu they did an amazing job with Rocket and Groot managing to convey both their tragic and comedic attributes. And the relative weakness of Gomora and Drax all did tie into the theme and tone of the film which was basically "who? Guardians of the Galaxy? These people? Really? Really!" From the dancing starlord at the beginning to the dancing starlord at the end you can see exactly what they were aiming for and they delivered in spades (which is actually a hard thing to do, see the aforementioned Man of Steel *ugh*). well done
I showed up at the mall about about 2 hours early to do some shopping and pick up tickets but both showings for the IMAX 3D were already sold out and only a few good seats were left for Real 3D. 0_0. The audience I saw it with laughed a lot, also often before the punchline, as others have mentioned. I think the trailers primed the mainstream to expect a funny movie and, besides, you often could see where the joke was headed. Once you hear
blacklight
you don't need
Jason Pollack
and likewise when you hear
fast reflexes
you don't need hear
I would catch it
to get the joke. Chris Pratt is a funny dude and all the actors had great delivery so I understand why the audience was in stitches. Which means they'll enjoy it even more the second time around.
Enough praise has been given to the soundtrack and when I heard
Ain't no mountain high enough
I was immediately hyped for the mix of the sequel.
the action was a kinda meh but they managed to make Rocket a legit badass so it's all good. I'm ambivalent about western blockbusters and all the superheroes punching and blowing up buildings (have I mentioned Man of Steel yet *ugh*) so the end 'fight' was kinda refreshing.
This movie delivered on all counts. exactly what I want from a popcorn summer movie.
Well, not particularly. Stark got more screentime and I always considered him to be an enemy of himself. Marvel slightly touched on it in Iron Man 2 (his alocholism) and 3 (his megalomania), but they never really followed up.
initially Ronan is just an asshole and the Kree are space dicks that think everyone should be rubbing their balls. The Skrulls dont even become a military power until they respond to the Kree they were successful merchant fleet rich boys. The Kree are that super powerful but not quite all powerful group of assholes, they will take on anyone, even the Shi'ar and know they will lose. Still swear the Accuser Core will stomp anyone in the galaxy. Later on the Kree and Ronan become more balanced and even allies at times. However thats more recent before that, an Accuser/Korath/Starforce stepping foot on your planet inducted it to the Kree Empire. They were the Imperium of man long before WH40K and the Supremor/intelligence was their god emperor.
however i dont think they would go into that in a GoTG movie.
I have never seen a 3D movie and I really want to see this on an IMAX screen.
One of the reasons is my eyes. I have a dominant left eye so I nearly always tend to focus out of that. For example, I have difficulty seeing the Magic Eye pictures. I found out that I am able to see the 3D on the 3DS, but I'm still worried the movie would be unwatchable
Three questions:
How is this movie in 3D, would it be better to see it on a regular screen?
If I have a dominant eye and pretty bad astigmatism, should I try to see a 3D movie?
If I am unable to view the 3D, does that generally render a 3D movie unwatchable?

I'm talking about the Red Skulls, Malekiths, Whiplashes etc. While Marvel doesn't outright kill the more important villains (obviously Skull will return at some point), Loki has at least appeared in numerous films.
