Hmm anyone have a Bestbuy account to help me purchase a serial? It seems like it only accepts US address and the amazon non-US address won't work.

Dunno what people find so great about greatsword Mesmers :/

I've been using a greatsword occasionally but it definitely has some problems. Not as many as the sceptre, but still.

1. All the animations are really long, which drops down the damage. Mind stab locks you in place.
2. Clones are useless since they don't deal conditions.
3. Summoned phantasm is melee and situational.
4. Pushback is very situational.
5. Mirror Blade summons a clone, which leaves you just autoattacking if using a phantasm build.

The staff is just better in every sense, especially if you play around with clones. The staff clones cause the same conditions as your main attack with the staff, so 3 of those up = mad damage.

Granted, it's fun in those big zerg events where you summon your melee phantasm and it sweeps through a big pack, but apart from that, the skills are kinda meh :p

i'm running around with main staff + second great sword in PvE, for the lack of another AE weapon. Using staff while soloing and switching to greatsword for group events where area attack are more usefull. I would love to use something/focus for temporal curtain alone, but miss area attack skills everytime i try it. Immovable warden is kind of useless when you are not sticking around him, and a mesmer should always be on the move.

btw, great swords berserker can be fun in WvW. It doesnt have line of sight, can be casted on top of the walls, does pretty good area damage and slows targets if you want to catch up to someone. Its was good enough on its own for me to take up great sword as second weapon. Still a hard choice.

Too soon to say for sure, because I have felt this way before about other MMOs on the first day, but I feel like I might be able to get into this. All the little things to do, all the random events. It's always on in this game, and that's really cool.

I played a bit as an elementalist. Got up to level 7 so far. I really like how that class works. All the different elemental atonements. They all look and feel really cool to use. Thanks to a friend of mine from work, he was showing me around a bit, and was making sure I knew what everything was. Going in for the first time, I had no idea what all the spyglass stuff meant, how skill points worked, the vistas (dude, this game totally turns into Assassin's creed a little, lol). It all seems pretty cool though.

It suffers greatly from the whole "why play an MMO when you can play the majority of it without talking to other people"... I did always kinda appreciate how Final Fantasy XI forced you to work with others, and I would make friends that way. I wish I could make 2 characters on different servers though, because I wish I could play with Gaf people too. I joined the Gates of Madness server, because I have a few friends from work who had a guild that I joined. I didn't realize there was only gonna be 6 people though.

I have given up many MMOs that I've tried, and even when they gave me a good first impression, that usually faded away because it didn't feel worth paying monthly for. Since it doesn't have a monthly fee, I'll feel more inclined to keep playing this I think.

True, the zerker is pretty good in WvW zergs, mainly due to the reasons you mentioned :)

I've also been using Sword/Focus in WvW. The temporal curtain pull is such a troll move, coupled with the sword jump + immobilize (when it actually works, lol). Then you can do blurred frenzy, enjoy a few seconds of invulnerability, and stealth/blink away.

So uh, GAFGUILD... We have 45k influence, why aren't we using some of that oO. There's cheap stuff like +15% karma for 24h that everyone could use for like 500 influence, why aren't we spending it?

uh, we should probably make certain to activate this buff 24/7

Are you managing your clones and shattering often?

That's the most important bit about mesmers since their auto attacks do little to no damage. Mind wreck does a lot of burst damage if you learn how to manage clones and phantasms. Don't let any of the clones just die by tanking monsters. Get the +15% mind wreck damage trait.

I can kill melee champions and veterans by myself.

+ 1 for Mes Love

I'm quite interested in this set up as it's a lot different from mine and my play style. I've gone for high crit/phantasm build and generally can solo Champs and vets by myself also. I only use clones to drop agro and heal, very rarely even use shatter.

so it's S/P + Staff for me.

I find greatsword to be rather weak, but it's because I don't think I've ever picked up a single level appropriate GS.

I plan on giving the GS a run when I can.

Just out of interest, which shatters are you using?

I play similarly to you.

I figured clones are for burst damage, there are traits to make you poop out clones very fast and reduce the cooldown and increase the damage on your Wrack. I haven't really explored that avenue yet fully.

The way I've gone is to have a lot of high powered phantasms and try to keep them up and alive all the time. They give out regen to allies which is semi-useful. I don't really use shatters, since I'm not traited into it. While the phantasms are up, I'm at the thick of it doing melee damage with my sword.

Phantasmal Berserker is a high-damage AoE cripple phantasm that doesn't usually stay in melee range, thus not dying instantly. The AoE pushback is great, Mirror Blade does decent damage to multiple targets and give you a clone to shatter. I agree about Mind Stab, the animation is too long.

I should probably try staff at some point (lvl 58!), I imagine Phantasmal Warlock hits like a truck against boss mobs.

in PvE, almost always F1

Lvl 60, got my tier 2 cultural chest piece (and my cultural tier 1 pants). I should submit a bug about that chest piece, leaves a weird line around her midsection.

can someone explain me what's the point of joining a guild on another server?

ps: reading the wiki seems like you char can belong to more guilds at the same time, but just have one active, is that correct?

Guesting will be enabled sometimes in the coming weeks. And yes, this is how the guild system works.

I usually only use mind wrack and cry of frustration (the confusion one) unless I get dungeon monsters aggro then I'll use distortion to run away.

Yep, the warlock is pretty sick if there are a lot of conditions on the target. On the downside, it doesn't really benefit as much from traits as the duelist (the bleed trait coupled with pistol cooldown reduction is awesome), and it doesn't give you a combo finisher.

But, if you're not using a pistol, the warlock is definitely your go-to ranged phantasm.

Dunno, game is crashing all the time for me whenever I take screenshots and sometimes when I teleport. Anyone else have these problems?

Currently I'm using scepter/focus as my alternate weapon-set for my guardian (my main one is greatsword). Scepter works fairly well, and I like the "5" skill on the focus for get out of dodge moments.

I've not really found an awesome land-based weapon set for my necro yet - certainly nothing as good as on the guardian. I'm running axe/warhorn which works fairly well with two daggers for up close and personal/life stealing stuff. I'm happy with both the main-hands in that set-up but the off-hands seem lackluster. Weirdly, my favourite necro weapon is the spear which is limited to under-water. Vampiric shrimp FOREVER.

Yeah, my mate is ever since he bought his new (totally improved) rig. He's reinstalled the game and the same thing happens. He's updated GPU drivers too, still happens. Very random.

FINALLY Trading Post is up and I can finally browse for some gear that is a departure from that level 1 looking crap. It's dirt cheap too, an entire set plus weapon cost me 3s.

Okay it's not exactly a looker but it's fresh god dammit.

You aren't kidding, Sethos. These trading post items are dirt cheap. It's way cheaper to buy a full set of greens than it is to craft gear right now. o_O Admittedly, the character I'm using currently is only level 14. Maybe it's different at higher levels.

I finally had to ask someone how to filter that talk out. For a game centered around exploration and "spontaneous" events and finding stuff on your own, people sure seem to ask a lot of really fucking specific questions that ruin the whole point of the experience IMO.

Well I find waiting in one area for an hour in hope that the boss will spawn fucking boring. I thought the point of the game was to have fun.

agree.

this is the first mmorpg i played where i actually never stop anywhere... i just walk around, knowing that something will happen, and i love it.

i didn't realize how much i hated quest hubs before playing GW2

you don't wait an hour for the boss to spawn, you generally participate in the chain of events that cause the boss to appear, or you do it wrong :p

Anyone else experienced not getting karma? I just created a new character and finished the first 4/5 hearts in Queensdale, but I'm still sitting at zero karma, unable to buy anything from the vendors.

I'm pretty sure the hearts are supposed to give karma as well as XP, right?

I have before, and the boss didn't spawn. Maybe I could ask where the other events are so I could take part in them and have fun, but apparently you always have to walk around blind otherwise Dreavus will get mad.

Only orange marked dynamic events give karma, just doing the heart doesn't.

I haven't really PvP'ed but I just realized that a Warrior with a Greatsword might not be very viable? The second ability "Hundred Blades" gets inturrepted if you move so yeah...

Bull's Charge -> Frenzy -> Balanced Stance -> Hundred Blades.

Grats, you've just burst someone down for 2/3 to 3/4 of their hp. Also there is a reason you have 2 weapon sets, so you're not just relying on just 1 combo and running away whilst everything is on CD.

What is it with Guardians are the Greatsword btw? It's so bad for PvP. It seems to do mediocre damage at best, and hasn't got all that great utility either. I've found Sword-Shield / Sceptre-Focus is definitely the way forward. You have insane amounts of survivability and you've got decent damage. You can make it to the long haul and if shit hits the fan, you can pop Tome of Courage for hilarious staying power to you and allies.

I believe earlier someone was advocating the use of a mace? I'm going to have to disagree and say it's terrible and that having a shield is fantastic. You get a lot of staying power with the shield up, which is what I believe Guardians are supposed to play like. You're a tank with sustainable constant damage.

For other Guardians out there who are PvPing, I hope you've been activating your Virtue of Justice, because the passive is piss poor compared to the active.

It's a pretty good feeling not to have a filled up questlog with quests you know you'll have a hard time finishing, or grey quests, or quests way above your level... I love it.

I'm ditching crafting for now, I'll do that with alts. Gear is dirt cheap on the TP at the moment anyway.
Wood and ore are easy to gather, but I can't be bothered grinding for cloth, scales, blood and fangs when I could be having fun actually playing the game. And while the game is still fresh and new I don't mind having to do multiple areas on 1 character to make up for missed crafting XP, seeing different zones is great!

yeah, in every other game the quest log is a constant reminder of a bunch of quest you couldn't do for whatever reason and is another fridge i don't want to space-manage.

So we ran AC story mode last night, and I have a few complaints.

Mechanically, the fights were pretty neat. I really appreciated the fact that they weren't all designed as tank and spank routine MMO fights. But I felt like the damage was WAY over-tuned on the bosses. Everyone complains about the lovers, so I will, too...I get what they were trying to do, but that fight took us SO many attempts because of random one-shots. It's almost not even predictable. I would be picking up a rock and get insta-cast hit by a lightning bolt and die. I mean, our group understood what to do and how to do it, but we were victim to RNG more often than we liked.

The final fight in there was reminiscent of Sindy from ICC (WoW), but again, he would target one of us and swing twice and kill us. I don't get it. We all understood to run and hide and get out of the red, etc., but more often than not, it just resulted in us chain-rez zerging him.

So I have to ask...

1) Are the PvE dungeons highly over-tuned, or are we just bad/doing it wrong? Most of us had done the fights before and knew how to do it, but it just felt SO random.

2) While ANet prides themselves on the fact that group comp doesn't matter, it feels gimpy when you lack certain classes with certain abilities. Would the fights be easier if we had certain classes? We ran it with two thieves, a ranger, a necro, and a warrior.

As much as it pains me to say it, I've put my 80 Engineer on a shelf to hopefully return to her once its less carpal tunnel inducing. I haven't played it in 2 days, and my index finger still hurts from constantly having to hit 1. Started a Ranger, and am already enjoying myself quite a bit more.

Would auto-attack help? You wouldn't have to spam 1. Just hit your other abilities that have a cooldown. I had your issue in Diablo 3. Thankfully it's not happening here.

Yeah I went to sleep with Stormbluff in the lead and getting more points than the others. Woke up to see Jade with a huge lead and control. Those overnight zergs are going to be brutal. Did all the Koreans join Jade? Seeing as we lost ours, this will continue to be a problem.

I still recognise some Korean players, which guilds are we supposed to have lost?

Yeah, Jade love their zergs, and it is working great for them.

So frustrating when you have a look at our server and see 20 people escorting Dolyaks in the corner to a keep that already has full supply.

Seen a few small groups trying to take over keeps too, they just get massacred. Don't understand why they don't go take over some smaller objectives, or do everyone a favour and keep the supply camps on our side.

I did AC story mode last night as well.

I found the Ranger fight to be the most enjoyable, it was cool watching the melee classes attack up close and then have to switch to range attacks and avoid the bosses ranged attacks and then switch back to melee when he comes down again.

We had no issues with the Lovers part, but here is my gripe:

No threat management, IE: How do you "tank" one away from the other when they are just doing whatever they please.
We started off the fight and I grabbed the dudes attention and held him for quite a while on one side, but with no healer, he out damages my heals before the CD is reset.

I also felt that the mobs are severely overtuned for the dungeon, I mean we had more trouble taking down the gate captain dude at the beginning then the final boss at the end...

Warming up to my Charr Warrior, playing him just now. Humans are just too dinky for heavy armour. I do like the human starting area though, so it's pretty awesome I can just teleport my Charr there.

Added you in-game as well.
